  • It is very important to understand the intention of a target ship to prevent collisions in multiple-ship situations. However, considering the intentions of a large number of ships at the same time is a great burden for the officer who must establish a collision avoidance plan. With a distributed algorithm, a ship can exchange information with a large number of target ships and search for a safe course. In this paper, I have applied a Distributed Stochastic Search Algorithm (DSSA), a distributed algorithm, for ship collision avoidance. A ship chooses the course that offers the greatest cost reduction or keeps its current course according to probability and constraints. DSSA is divided into five types according to the probability and constraints mentioned. In this paper, the five types of DSSA are applied for ship collision avoidance, and the effects on ship collision avoidance are analyzed. In addition, I have investigated which DSSA type is most suitable for collision avoidance. The experimental results show that the DSSA-A and B schemes offered effective ship collision avoidance. This algorithm is expected to be applicable for ship collision avoidance in a distributed system.

  • This study was conducted to examine the medication non-adherence and related factors based on medication adherence model of older adults that use polypharmacy. A survey was used to collect data from 190 study participants. Among the 190 subjects, 43.2% did not adhere to their polypharmacy intentionally. The reason for medication non-adherence was listed in order of 'when they felt well on symptoms', 'when it was annoying and uncomfortable', and 'when they felt worse due to medication'. Moreover, the older adults often do not seek for medication information actively. Between adherence and non-adherence groups, while there were differences in gender, type of medication, and experience in drug-related side effects, there were no statistically significant differences in medication information contents and route. This study demonstrates that gender, type of medication, and experience in drug-related side effects should be considered to promote medication adherence. In addition, since the elderly with polypharmacy are rarely actively searching for the contents and route of drug information, the contents of drug information need to be provided by the route preferred by the elderly in order to assist in their decision-making process for polypharmacy.

  • This study identified types of information source, and explored a path model for consumer information search by shopping attributes in the context of online decision making. Participants completed self-administered questionnaires during regularly scheduled classes. A total of 219 usable questionnaires were obtained from respondents who enroll at universities in the southwestern region of the United States. For data analysis, factor analysis and path model estimation were used. Consumer information source was classified into three types for online clothing purchases: Online source, Offline retail source, and Mass media. Consumers were more likely to rely on offline retail source for online clothing purchases, than other sources. In consumer information search by shopping attributes, online sources were more likely to be related to transaction-related attributes(e.g., incentive service), whereas offline retail source(e.g., displays in stores, manufacturer's catalogs and pamphlets) were more likely to be related to product and market related attributes(e.g., aesthetics, price) when purchasing clothing online. Also, the path model emphasizes the effect of shopping attributes on traditional retailer search behavior, leading to online purchase intention for clothing. This study supports consumer information search by attributes, and discusses a managerial implication of multi-channel retailing for apparel.
