The purpose of this study is to inverstigate the optimism level of the gifted; to verify the differences in optimism level according to the types of the gifted; and to compare the optimism level of the gofted with that of mainstream students. 332 high school students participated in this study. This study was to examine the passion profiles and direct, indirect, and total effects of music valuation(MV), passion for music (i.e., harmonious passion, obsessive passion), and satisfaction in music(SM) on music accomplishment(MA) of musically talented high school students in Korea. Of the 599 musically talented high school students surveyed from Gyonggi, Chungnam, and Busan in South Korea, 524 completed and returned the questionnaires yielding a total response rate of 87.48%. Students with high harmonious passion(HP) and high obsessive passion(OP) were classified as high passion students(Nhigh passion=228), where as those with low HP and low OP were classified as low passion students(Nlow passion=5). Students with high passion had higher MV and higher SM than those with high HP or low passion. Moreover, those with high passion had higher music accomplishment than those with high HP, high OP, or low passion. Students with high HP had higher MA and SM than those with low passion. MV affected MA through both HP and OP, and also SA. HP and OP also affected MA and SA. SM directly affected MA. Total effects of HP on MA were higher than those of OP, SM, and MV. The indirect effect of HP on MA were higher than those of OP. Findings indicated that the more students have a HP, the more they showed higher SM and MA when they engaged in music activity with higher MV. Future research is need to replicate these findings with professional musicians at higher levels of expertise.
This study was to examine whether musically talented adolescents' passion and achievement goals influence their deliberate practice. Of the musically talented adolescents surveyed from two arts high schools in Seoul, Korea, 597 completed and returned the questionnaires. Their average age was 17.4 years. Paired t-test on musically talented adolescents' passion(i.e., harmonious passion, and obsessive passion) and achievement goals(i.e., mastery goals, performance-approach goals, and performance-avoidance goals) indicated that harmonious passion were higher than obsessive passion. Mastery goals were higher than performance-approach goals. And performance-approach goals were higher than performance-avoidance goals. Independent t-tests were measured between high and low deliberate practice(DP) groups. High DP group showed higher harmonious and obsessive passion, and mastery and performance goals than low DP group. It was also found that two types of passion(i.e., harmonious and obsessive) positively influenced on deliberate practice via mastery goals.

This study is about the development of an identification model for artistically gifted students from low income and/or multi-cultural families. Given that parental support at early ages is crucial for talent development, students from low income families are often dismissed in recognizing their artistic giftedness. Based on a comprehensive literature review and consultations with experts in art, the SMC model was developed to identify disadvantaged gifted students in the areas of music, visual arts, and ballet. The model consists of three steps of identification, such as review of documents and teacher recommendations, evaluations of artistic giftedness, and a summative evaluation, and involves multiple criteria for identifying giftedness in both domain general and domain specific arts. SMC is promising in discovering many unrecognized disadvantaged children of artistic potential, thereby using various quantitative and qualitative measures. Yet, issues of validity and reliability of SMC need to be substantiated by subsequent theoretical and empirical studies.

The purpose of this study was to analyze intellectual characteristics of elementary students in science-gifted education. For this, 72 science-gifted students were selected. Multiple intelligences, creativity, and the science process skills of these students were tested. To compare these traits with those of general students, 78 general students were also tested. The results of this study indicated that science-gifted students significantly surpassed general students in the areas of logical-mathematics, intra-person, and naturalist. Especially, the intelligences of logical-mathematics and intra-person were strong point of the science-gifted students. But music intelligence among the 8 intelligence was weak point. Creativity and the science process skills of the students in science-gifted education excelled those of general students. Therefore, to enhance the efficiency of the science-gifted education program in elementary school, it is necessary to consider the intellectual characteristics of the students.
This study aimed to explore the problem in curriculum development in school-based gifted program in the arts and suggest the way to solve that. For this study, we surveyed 28 teachers and guest instructors, furthermore interviewed 6 teachers (4 in music and 2 visual arts). The study results indicated that not only curriculum development of school-based program for the gifted in the arts was not systemic, but also most teacher depended excessively on guest instructors due to the lack of expertise and information for curriculum development. Also, They did not understand specific meaning of the giftedness and gifted curriculum in arts nor recognize the unique role of school-based gifted program. In addition, most teachers simply attempted to solve lack of knowledge and experience on a personal level. Their research condition were inadequate to plan curriculum. To solve these problems in curriculum development in school-based gifted program in arts, we suggested some solutions: differentiated teacher in-service program, the achievement criteria for fundamentals of curriculum, system for connecting materials, information and human resources, as well as consultative body for improving the present condition of school-based gifted program.

The interview was administrated as semi-structured deep interview about 6 areas - education, major, family and parent, personal relationship, leisure time activity, achievement and motivation of success. The results showed that achievers were active students during their school days. They thought differentiated education and student-centered lessons are important. Many achievers answered they do not have any personal mentee, and decision of majors and education should be matched with the perception of one's potential and interest. Exercises, music, and reading books were strongly suggested as leisure time activities, and the key inner factors for success were curiosity and self-confidence. Beneficiaries of gifted education perceived their experience of gifted education had a positive influence on their achievement. Based on the these results, ways to improve gifted education were discussed.
