Molecular relationship and genetic diversity of 21 wild tea collections which grown natural region in Korea were investigated based on PCR-RFLP analysis using DFR genes. Approximately 1.4kb fragment of the DFR gene from wild tea samples were successfully amplified use DFR 4+5 primer pair. On the bases of restriction fragment length polymorphism(RFLP) analysis using Hpa II and Mse I enzymes, three different band patterns shown from Hpa II enzyme and showed genetic diversity between same region wild tea group. Six kind of restriction enzyme profiles obtained from digested with restriction endonuclease Mse I and shown two kind of restriction enzyme profiles collected from same region wild tea at Ungpo. The results of RFLP analysis indicated that wild tea showed genetic diversity among different regions of tea groups, but also between same region wild tea.
Genus Phyllostachys is a long-lived woody species primarily distributed throughout South East Asia. Many species of this genus has been regarded as medically and ecologically important in the world. We evaluated representative samples of the four taxa with RAPD to estimate genetic relationships within the genus Phyllostachys. The percentages of polymorphic loci were 8.9-33.3% at the species level. P. bambusoides was found to show lower genetic diversity (H=0.018) than other species. Total genetic diversity ($H_T$) was 0.315, genetic diversity within populations ($H_S$) was 0.043, the proportion of total genetic diversity partitioned among populations ($G_{ST}$) was 0.659 and the gene flow (Nm) was 0.0263. As some Korean populations were isolated and patchily distributed, they exhibited low levels of genetic diversity. The four taxa of the genus Phyllostachys analyzed were distinctly related to a monophyletic. P. nigra var. henonis. Stapf was found to be more closely related to P. pubescens than to P. nigra. P. bambusoides was quite distinct from the remaining species.

This study was conducted to investigate the genetic characteristics of wild population of Pacific abalone, Haliotis discus hannai in Dokdo island. We used six polymorphic microsatellite marker to investigate the genetic diversity and population structure. The loci Hdh1321 and Hdh512 had the highest number of allele (34 and 22 respectively) and loci Hdh145 and Awb083 had the lowest (5 and 7 respectively). The mean number of allele per locus was 14.8. The average observed and expected heterozygosities were 0.664 and 0.824 respectively, and the average $F_{IS}$ was 0.195. We compared the population genetic parameters of Dokdo population with previously published data of the same species. At the result, the parewise $F_{ST}$ test showed significant difference between the Dokdo population and six populations (published data), suggesting that the genetic relationship of Dokdo population was separated from six populations.
Plantago asiatica (Plantaginaceae) is a wind-pollinated plant that grows mainly on fields in East Asia. Starch gel electrophoresis was used to investigate the allozyme diversity and population structure of 18 populations of this species. Although the plantain populations were isolated and patchily distributed, they maintained a high level of genetic diversity; the average percentage of polymorphic loci was 57.1%, the mean number of alleles per locus was 2.07, and the average heterozygosity for 18 populations was 0.201. The combination of a predominant wind-pollinated, mix-mating reproduction, large population sizes, high gene flow between subpopulations, and a propensity for high fecundity may explain the high level of genetic diversity within populations. A direct gradient in overall genetic diversity is associated with latitude. Genetic diversity of P. asiatica is markedly decreased from $35^{\circ}3^{\prime}$ to high latitude and decreased from $35^{\circ}3^{\prime}N$ to low latitude, whereas there does not show a longitudinal gradient in genetic diversity.
Biodiversity is defined as totality of genetic, species, and ecosystem variability. It provides natural sources of crop improvement, traditional medicine and biotechnology. In 1993, the Convention on Biological Diversity(CBD) became a legally binding framework for conserving and utilizing global biological diversity. It recognizes national sovereign rights over all genetic resources, such as the need to compensate developing countries for the resources they have provided to the industrialized world. The CBD grants access to those resources in exchange for compensation as well as technology transfer, so that the access to genetic resources would be made under prior informed consent(PIC) and mutually agreed terms(MAT). On the other hand, the developed countries argued that unfettered exchange of genetic resources was essential for scientific research and development, and that technology using genetic resources should be protected. There are many countries today, developing legal frameworks concerned with access to their local genetic resources and benefit sharing. In this study, we analyzed the international trends for conservation of biodiversity and sustainable use of genetic resources, and suggested how to cope actively with the situation.
AFLP markers were employed to detect genetic diversity and genetic relationship among 26 accessions of foxtail millet collected from Korea. Analysis of 26 accessions of foxtail millet with nine AFLP primer set combinations detected a total of 170 bands, of which 145 (85.3%) showed polymorphic at the species level. The phenotypic diversity (Hs) calculated for the nine primer combinations ranged from 1.84 to 6.8, with an average of 3.85. The average phenotypic diversity values were 3.39 and 2.99 for accessions collected from Gangwon province (Group 1), and accessions collected from the other areas including Gyeonggi province (Group 2), respectively. In the cluster analysis of 26 accessions, two major groups were recognized at 73% genetic similarity. Group I includes 13 accessions, which were collected in Gangwon province, and 1 accession, which was collected in Gyeonggi province, with genetic similarity of 76.8%. Group II includes two accessions, which were collected in Gangwon province, and 10 accessions, which were collected in the other areas with genetic similarity of 78.9%. The presenting data on the assessment of genetic diversity and genetic relationships among Korean accessions of foxtail millet will be helpful for efficient collection or conservation strategy of foxtail millet germplasm in Korea.

We investigated the genetic diversity of an endemic rare species, Forsythia ovata Nakai by examining 93 ISSR amplicons in 84 individuals distributed among five populations. The overall percentage of polymorphic ISSR amplicons was 54.8% and mean number of amplicons per ISSR primer was 6.6. The amount of genetic diversity was relatively lower than other shrub species. The Mt. Seokbyeong and Mt. Seorak B populations had the highest level of genetic diversity. Although the Seokgae-jae population had the lowest level of genetic diversity, the population was genetically the most distinctive from the other populations. About 30.6% of the total variation was allocated between five populations, which was slightly higher than other shrub species. Such a pattern of genetic variation may have resulted from the limited distribution and small population sizes of F. ovata. The UPGMA dendrogram based on Nei's genetic distance showed some decisive geographic patterns. These results suggest that, in addition to the preservation of the natural stands, the conservation of larger number of populations with small number of individuals per population is more effective for the dynamic ex situ conservation and for maintaining the genetic diversity of F. ovata than smaller number of populations with large number of individuals.

Inter simple sequence repeat (ISSR) markers were performed in order to analyse the genetic relation-ships of both taxa of Gardenia jasminoides var. radicans and G. jasminoides for. grandifora. Over the 88 fragments, only one locus (ISSR-11-05) was specific to G. jasminoides var. radicans and only one (ISSR-09-05) G. jasminoides for. grandiflora. Although G. jasminoides var. radicans showed low levels of alleles and Shannon's information index than G. jasminoides for. Grandiflora, however, there was not significant differences (p > 0.05). For both taxa the mean genetic diversity of natural populations was higher than that of cultivation populations. It was suggested that domestication processes via artificial selection do not have eroded the high levels of genetic diversity. ISSR markers were more effective in classifying natural populations of wild G. jasminoides in East Asia as well as cultivated G. jasminoides. The information about the phylogenetic relationship of G. jasminoides var. radicans and its closely related species is very valuable of the systematics of genus Gardenia, the origin of cultivated G. jasminoides, and future G. jasminoides breeding.

This study analyzed 96 individuals in 6 populations using ISSR marker to investigate the genetic diversity of Salicornia herbacea populations. The total of 49 PCR amplification bands was observed in 6 ISSR primers, and 30 of them had genetic polymorphisms. The Shannon's information index (I) and gene diversity index (h), which indicate the genetic diversity of the Salicornia herbacea populations, were 0.382 and 0.249, respectively. The genetic diversity according to the population size was lowest with 0.092 (I) and 0.058 (h) in $0.1m{\times}0.1m$ and highest with 0.338 (I) and 0.227 (h) in $25m{\times}25m$, which was suitable for the furtherance of the high population with high genetic diversity. The UPGMA dendrogram based on Nei's genetic distance did not show a significant correlation with the distance between the Salicornia herbacea population. The results indicate that the Salicornia herbacea habiting in the restricted environment should have an area over a certain size to ensure the formation of a population with genetic diversity.
