  • This study compared the characteristics and perceptions of science imaginary drawings done by scientifically-gifted and general elementary students. To do this, sixth graders (n=60) at three gifted science education institutes and sixth graders (n=51) at two elementary schools in Gyeonggi province were selected and administered the questionnaires. The analyses of the results indicated that the pictures of scientifically-gifted students included and integrated more academic fields and places than those of general students. The pictures of scientifically-gifted students were also more elaborate, but less painted. In addition, scientifically-gifted students perceived more positively the educational benefits of science imaginary drawing upon cognitive and affective aspects. However, there were no significant differences between scientifically-gifted students and general students in the understanding of science imaginary drawing, distribution of the pictures by times, perceptions on educational benefits of science imaginary drawing upon aesthetic aspects, and perceptions on difficulties in the processes of scientific imaginary drawing. A few scientifically-gifted students answered that science imaginary drawing was not more useful to them than to general students. Educational implications of these findings are discussed.

  • This study is intended to reconsider the meaning of the education for gifted/talented children, the foundation object of science high school by examining the behavior characteristics between gifted students and talented students in open-end mathematical problem solving and to provide the basis for realization of 'meaningful teaming' tailored to the learner's level, the essential of school education. For the study, 8 students (4 gifted students and 4 talented students) were selected out of the 1 st grade students in science high school through the distinction procedure of 3 steps and the behavior characteristics between these two groups were analyzed according to the basis established through the literature survey. As the results of this study, the following were founded. (1) It must be recognized that the constituent members of science high school were not the same excellent group and divided into the two groups, gifted students who showed excellence in overall field of mathematical behavior characteristics and talented students who had excellence in learning ability of mathematics. (2) The behavior characteristics between gifted students and talented students, members of science high school is understood and a curriculum of science high school must include a lesson for improving the creativity as the educational institutions for gifted/talented students, unlike general high school. Based on these results, it is necessary to try to find a support plan that it reduces the case which gifted students are generalized with common talented students by the same curriculum and induces the meaningful loaming to learners, the essential of school education.

  • As the validity issue of teacher nominations for the identification of gifted students has been raised recently, this study purports to test the validity of teacher nominations for selecting scientifically gifted students. As the criterion variables, domain specific traits such as science creative problem solving skills and science attitudes and domain general characteristics such as divergent thinking skills, creative attitudes, intrinsic motivation, and leadership were analyzed. Scientifically gifted students, potentially gifted students who had never been enrolled in gifted programs but were nominated as the scientifically gifted by teachers, and general class students participated in the study. The results of ANOVA showed that there were significant differences in all variables but originality factors of the TTCT and science creative problem solving skill test between gifted/nominated students and general class students; gifted/nominated students were significantly superior in these variables to general class students. The discriminant functions analysis yielded a discriminant function that significantly discriminated between gifted/nominated and general class students. Variables loaded on the discriminant function were science creative problem solving skills except for the originality subfactor, and science efficacy. These results imply that while teachers are likely to consider adaptation-oriented academic excellency related to logical thinking skills, problem solving skills, and science performance when nominating students, they may ignore the innovation-oriented property which is indicated as the fluency and originality factors of TTCT. Also, the criteria of teacher nominations are presumed to be congruent with the selection criteria of the gifted education program which pursued academic excellency as the educational goal. This suggests that with such criteria, high performing students in the science area can be sufficiently identified by teachers with no further identification procedures or/and tests.

  • The purpose of this study was to develop a math test for identification of the mathematically gifted on the basis of their math creative problem solving ability and to evaluate the goodness of the test. Especially, testing reliability and validity of scoring method on the basis of fluency only for evaluation of math creative problem solving ability was one of the main purposes. Ten closed math problems and 5 open math problems were developed requiring math thinking abilities such as intuitive insight, organization of information, inductive and deductive reasoning, generalization and application, and reflective thinking. The 10 closed math test items of Type I and the 5 open math test items of Type II were administered to 1,032 Grade 7 students who were recommended by their teachers as candidates for gifted education programs. Students' responses were scored by math teachers. Their responses were analyzed by BIGSTEPS and 1 parameter model of item analyses technique. The item analyses revealed that the problems were good in reliability, validity, item difficulty and item discriminating power even when creativity was scored based on the single criteria of fluency. This also confirmed that the open problems which are less-defined, less-structured and non-entrenched were good in measuring math creative problem solving ability of the candidates for math gifted education programs. In addition, it was found that the math creative problem solving tests discriminated applicants for the two different gifted educational institutions.

  • In this paper, we tried to identify implications of selecting gifted of information science & followed educational system via analyzing each of student's characteristics in each subjects they study within Science Education Institute for the Gifted. A study of the existing institutions do not have experience of the gifted students based on assessment through observation of the 1-year science, mathematics and information science education in the List of attribute analysis. Learners of Information Science became with analysis that Attitude Category was superior in mathematics to the subject of science and Problem Solving Category regardless of the subjects showed similar. As to, Attitude Category, Problem Solving Category and Mathematics Cognition Category was analyzed to be closed and we could confirm through the qualitative observation record. On this, the researcher concluded that the mathematics could know the effect fitness by a learner rather than the subject of science as to an attitude and problem resolution area.

  • This study compared science academic passion between elementary general and science-gifted students. A science academic passion test was conducted for fifth-sixth graders at an elementary school, and two gifted science education institutes in Seoul, with 95 and 92 students selected for the test. The result analysis revealed that the science-gifted students' science intellectual passion was significantly higher than general students, regardless of grade and gender. Also, the scores of general students were high in the order of "harmonious passion," "importance," "like," "time/energy investment," and "obsessive passion." The differences in scores between all sub-domains were statistically substantial. Moreover, there were no considerable differences in scores of the science-gifted students among the "important," "like," and "harmonious passion." However, the scores in these three domains were higher than that of "time/energy investment" and "obsessive passion." In addition, the "time/energy investment" score was higher than that of "obsessive passion." The differences in science academic passion by grade and gender were not statistically significant regardless of whether or not a student was science gifted. These results suggest that science academic passion characterizes science-gifted students rather than personal characteristics such as grade or gender.
