We can explain open education by means of pulling down the straight and narrow viewpoint of our educational system. We should incorporate various thoughts and attempts to the most practical educational classrooms and learn to cope flexibly with the several educational problems. On the other hand, Britain for the last fifty years have adapted progressive method in most schools, but with no visible results. The children's fundamental mathematical abilities have not increased. Therefore, mathematical educators in U. S. and Britain proposed the following three facts: First, we need to find out precisely what is involved in applying mathematical skills to practical situations; Secondly, we need to find out why this kind of mathematical understanding is so difficult for so many children; And, finally, we need to know what methods can be used to help children attain this wider mathematical understanding. Thus, we have analyzed and studied the British primary mathematics textbooks < stage 1 >, < stage 3 >, < stage 4 > and < stage 5 > from the open educational viewpoint and the above proposals. As result, a central point was that British have well incorporated into their primary mathematics textbooks with the variety of programs using everyday problems.
Angle concept is widely used in all mathematics curriculums and is a basic concept in geometric domain. Since angle have a multifaceted and affect subsequent learning, it is necessary for students to understand various angle concepts. In this study, Singapore, U.K., Australia, and U.S. are selected as comparable countries to examine the angle-related contents and learning process that appear in the curriculum as a whole, and then look at the perspectives and the size aspects of angle in detail and give implications to the Korean curriculum based on them. According to the analysis, the four countries except Korea, supplement angle, complement angle, angles on a straight line, angles at a point, and finding angle were explicitly covered in the curriculum. And most countries gradually covered angle-related contents over several years, compared to Korea which intensively studied in a particular school year. In common, definition of angle was described as static, measurement of angle was described as dynamic. But in Korean curriculum, dynamic views on angles are described later and less compared to other countries, and range of angle size was narrower than in other countries'. From this comparison, this study suggest to discuss how to place and develop various contents of characteristics of angle in curriculum, address the angle using both static and dynamic perspectives, and introduce the angle size as the amount of rotation to learn the reflex angle, $180^{\circ}$, $360^{\circ}$ angle.
The purpose of this study is to examine the state of problem solving in Korean elementary mathematics. To do this, we considered the meaning of problem and problem solving in mathematics education, and analyzed the mathematics curricula in the longitudinal-latitudinal dimensions respectively. The longitudinal one consists in examining and comparing the all-time Korean elementary mathematics curricula. Meanwhile the latitudinal one consists in examining and comparing the elementary mathematics curricula of Singapore, the United Kingdom, Japan, and France. As a result of analysis, we selected ten sieves for analysing Korean elementary mathematics textbooks according to the 7th mathematics curriculum. By the analysis, we conclude that we teach problem solving quite positively in school mathematics relative to another countries, in particular we have to reconsider some issues including dealing problem solving as a independent content not a process integrated in other contents.
Statistics education is considered within the mathematics curriculum and, thus, can be integrated into other areas of mathematics. However, statistical concepts and thinking skills have to be considered as very different from those of other areas. It is possible to make statistics more meaningful for the learner by making definitions or explanations of concepts in textbooks more clear and consistent. In 'Math I' and 'Probability & Statistics' of the 7th curriculum, the definitions of sample standard deviation are different, which might confuse students. In this study, firstly, some issues relevant to sample standard deviation concept are discussed through the analysis in terms of didactical situation and curriculum. Secondly, the characteristics of sample standard deviation concept as a scholarly knowledge are examined. Finally, the characteristics of didactic transposition of sample standard deviation concept in Japanese, American, and British textbooks are investigated and some suggestions are elicited.
Korea, where the national curriculum is run, can change school education by specifying basic competence in the common curriculum of elementary and middle schools for students to pursue school learning and real life. The numeracy as a basic competence should not be limited to mathematics, so it needs to be specified in the national curriculum covering several subjects and guided through various subject curriculums. To this end, the study proposed concepts, components, and levels of numeracy and proposed ways to reflect them in the national curriculum and other subjects' curricula. To ensure its validity, the UK, Canada and Australia curriculum are analyzed, and the results of the survey are proposed for various education experts. This study proposed two ways to briefly state the numeracy in the national curriculum and to imply the contents related to the numeracy in each subject curriculum, and to present the concepts, components and levels of numeracy in the national curriculum in detail and to describe numeracy code in each subject curriculum. These suggestions obtained high consent from experts.
This study investigated school mathematics curriculum of England, newly revised in 1998, focused on the 'shape, space, and measures' domain among three major domains of the English curriculum. On the basis of its understanding, this domain was compared and analyzed with school mathematics curriculum of Korea. In doing so, this study explored its plans and procedures and established a frame of comparison for the curriculums between the two countries. The structure of the National Curriculum in England is composed of programmes of study and attainment targets. The former sets out what should be taught in mathematics at key stages 1, 2, 3, and 4 and provides the basis for planning schemes of work, and the latter sets out the knowledge, skills, and understanding that pupils of different abilities and matures are expected to have by the end of each key stage. Attainment targets are composed of eight levels and an additional level of increasing difficulty. According to the results of the present study, Korea focuses on the formal and systematic mathematical knowledge on the basis of sound understanding of certain mathematical terms or concepts. On the other hand, England curriculum tends to deal with the content which can be understood more intuitively, flexibly, and naturally through the experience and aquisition based on the concrete manipulation. Particularly, it emphasizes that mathematics be realistic and useful in solving a diverse problems confronted in everyday life.
Current mathematics curriculum of South Korea suggests that students learn mathematics in school with calculators except that the aim of the math lessons is to achieve calculation skills, but we can't be sure that elementary school students use calculators in math lessons of school. Actually we don't have enough data to identify how many elementary school students use calculators in math lessons. The aims of this study are to compare the ratio of elementary school students using calculators in math lessons of school between 20 countries and to analyse the relation between using calculators in math lessons and the achievements of math through $4^{th}$ grade mathematics test of TIMSS 2015. The results of this study are two. One is that generally $4^{th}$ grade students did not use calculators in math lessons. The other result is that generally there is no relation between using calculators in math lessons and the achievements of the math test through $4^{th}$ grade mathematics test of TIMSS 2015. Only in Hong Kong SAR, students without using calculators have higher achievements than students using calculators. In England and USA, students using calculators have higher achievements than students without using calculators. Finally, researcher in this study suggests some implications on using calculator in elementary schools.

The concepts of sample and sampling are central to make a statistically correct decision, so we need to be emphasized their importance in the statistics education. Nevertheless, there were not enough studies which discuss how to teach the concepts of sample and sampling. In this study, teaching sample and sampling is addressed by foreign curricula and cases of instruction in order to obtain suggestions for teaching sample and sampling. In particular, the curricular of Australia, New Zealand, England and the United States are analyzed, considering the sample representativeness and the sampling variability; the two elements in the concept of sample. Also foreign textbooks and cases of instruction when it comes to teach sample are analyzed. The results say that with respect to teach sample can be divided into four suggestions: first, sample was taught in the process of statistical inquiry such as data collection, analysis, and results. Second, sample was introduced earlier than Korea curriculum. Third, when it comes to teach sample, sample variability, as well as sample representativeness was considered. Fourth, technological tools were used to enhance understanding sample.
This paper aims to examine how the public perception of mathematics changed in England in the 19th century. As rapid industrial and social developments took place in the 19th century, the educational environment underwent great changes, and the value and public perception of mathematics also changed. Mathematics took a new position in the terrain of educational reform in the late 19th century. In this study, I analyzed the actual condition of mathematics education in elementary and secondary schools, popular educational institutions, and universities in England in the first half, middle, and second half of the 19th century, and compared what values and usefulness of mathematics education were justified in each institution. I also examined how satirical magazine Punch satirized the public understanding or view on mathematics at each period. It is to be hoped that this study will have significant implications for raising the public's positive perception of mathematics in modern society.
