  • A variety of competencies for good teaching in mathematics has been discussed. It has been expected that there is discordance between researchers and teachers' perspectives on the competencies. We attempted to investigate teachers' perspectives rather than researchers' to narrow the possible discordance. First, we built a list of competencies for good teaching that mathematics teachers should meet by reviewing literatures. Second, we investigated mathematics teachers' perceptions about what requirements teachers should meet for good teaching, how mathematics learning experiences at the university level influence teachers' competence cultivation, and how pre-service teacher education influence teachers' competence building. Based on the results, we discussed mathematics teachers' competencies for good teaching and provided implications for pre-service teacher education.

  • In this research, cases of classes for enhancing mathematical creativity are examined in order to explore how to improve methods of math instructions. The objective of the research is to design a creative, efficient math class of superior quality, supplementing the current educational curricula. To this end, features and elements of creative math class are classified into three categories: assignment characteristics, teacher's role, and teaching environment. Based on these, two high school teachers were selected for case study of creative instructions. By observing and analyzing their classes, the research identified main elements of creative classes and their characteristics according to the three categories. The research also explored how to revitalize creative math class by eliciting opinions of researchers and educational experts.

  • The purpose of this study is to understand the public education system in Korea, that features many pre-taught students, and to figure out how elementary school teachers teach them. To accomplish this study, 204 elementary school teachers in Seoul participated in a survey and the frequency and percentage were made. In addition, to add more depth to this study 5 elementary school teachers had several interviews. We obtained the following results. First, elementary school teachers generally think that the situation with many pre-taught students have had a bad effect on public education and pre-taught students are drilled but cannot understand what they have learnt. They also answered that they have low morale when teaching pre-taught students. Second, a large number of elementary school teachers think the situation with many of the pre-taught students does not help the public math education system, which influences the teachers' teaching style. Teachers who answered negative on pre-taught students are running their math classes focusing on understanding math concepts and activities. On the other hand, few teachers who answered positive on pre-taught students did not care about the situation with many pre-taught students.

  • TPCK is the knowledge of intersection in mathematics, technology, and pedagogy. This study investigated a teacher's change of his TPCK. He participated in the professional development program which was designed to develop mathematics teachers' TPCK. The professional development program was based on using spreadsheets in teaching mathematics. The researcher suggests a consideration for the integration of technology in mathematics education and mathematics teacher education. The program consisted of a four week summer professional development program and three actual mathematics classroom teaching. Ten teachers took part in the program. One teacher who changed his TPCK most was selected to investigate what made it change most. Following teaching practice was the most influential factor in changing his TPCK.

  • In this study, the researcher developed a course integrated mathematical problem posing activities in order to enhance pre-service mathematics teachers' ability to carry out problem posing activities in mathematics classroom, and examined the changes of pre-service mathematics teachers' perceptions about problem posing through the course. The problem posing course developed in this study consisted of three stages: education on the theories regarding problem posing; activities with problem posing; development and implementation of problem posing tasks. According to the results of the questionnaires, interviews, and class journals data analysis, the problem posing experiences provided in this study were very effective in improving pre-service mathematics teachers' understanding of the problem posing strategies and the benefit of problem posing activities to student learning. Particularly, the experience in various problem posing activities and the implementation experience of problem posing provided in the course played a key role in the improvement of pre-service mathematics teachers' understanding of problem posing and PCK.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the perceptions of creativity in mathematics of preservice elementary school teachers. Creativity in Mathematics is one of the most important components in mathematics teaching and learning, which has been emphasized in the Principles and Standards for School Mathematics and the 2009 Revised Mathematics Curriculum. For this study, the researcher analyzed reports of creativity in mathematics in mathematics lessons from the perspectives of 55 preservice elementary school teachers. The preservice teachers observed 55 mathematics lessons focusing on creativity in mathematics during their two-week-student-teaching period. The results showed the followings. First, the preservice teachers had a narrow perceptions on creativity in mathematics. Second, observational experiences of mathematics lessons led the preservice teachers to reconsideration of creativity in mathematics. Third, the preservice teachers provided a various strategies to enhance students' creativity in mathematics. The researcher suggested the followings. First, definitions and practices of creativity in mathematics should be included in the teacher education programs. Second, mathematics textbooks should include creativity in mathematics in a sophisticated manner. Third, creativity-rich materials should be developed and distributed to teachers. Finally, well-designed teacher training programs should be necessary.

  • Despite the recent increasing interest in classroom expertise of teachers for gifted there has been lack of research on exploring or analyzing the components of classes for gifted tailored to the characteristics of each subject matter Given this, this study looked for the components of performance domain of classes for gifted in mathematics and then analyzed one teacher's 12 lessons in terms of the components. The features of the lessons included the establishment of classroom atmosphere by considering the characteristics of mathematically gifted students, the introduction of or expansion to mathematically enriched tasks, promotion to mathematically higher thinking, and emphasis of mathematical pattern, connections, and utility. This study is expected for researchers to provide a practical case on how to analyze elementary classes for gifted in mathematics. It also helps teachers who teach gifted students to develop professional vision of mathematics instruction and to increase their classroom expertise.

  • The purpose of this study is to offer the implication for elementary school mathematics teaching by analyzing teachers' reflection on the cognitive demands of mathematical tasks they give in class. During the setup phase and the implementation phase in math class, the researchers analyzed the change of cognitive demands on mathematical tasks and the factors which had influence on such changes. After teachers' reflection on teaching, the researchers analyzed the change of cognitive demands on mathematical tasks and the factors which had influence on such changes in math classes. As a result, before teachers' reflection on the cognitive demands of mathematical tasks, the higher-level demands of mathematical tasks had a tendency to decline. However, after teachers' reflection on the cognitive demands of mathematical tasks, higher-level demands of mathematical tasks were maintained.
