This study aims to analyze statistical tasks in Korean and Singaporean textbooks with the mathematical modeling perspective and compare the learning contents and experiences of students from both countries. I analyzed mathematical modeling tasks in the textbooks based on five aspects: (1) the mathematical modeling process, (2) the data type, (3) the expression type, (4) the context, and (5) the mathematical activity. The results of this study show that Korean and Singaporean textbooks provide the highest percentage of the "working-with-mathematics" task, the highest percentage of the "matching task," and the highest percentage of the "picture" task. The real-world context and mathematical activities used in Korean and Singaporean textbooks differed in percentage. This study provides implications for the development of textbook tasks to support future mathematical modeling activities. This includes providing a balanced experience in mathematical modeling processes and presenting tasks in various forms of expression to raise students' cognitive level and expand the opportunity to experience meaningful mathematizing. In addition, it is necessary to present a contextually realistic task for students' interest in mathematical modeling activities or motivation for learning.
This study examined the effect and structural relationship of math teachers' teaching ability and class activity types on learners' value perception, confidence, and interest of mathematics at the student level and teacher level. To this end, data from 2nd graders of korea middle school in TIMSS 2019 were applied to the multilevel structural equation model. As a result of the analysis, the teaching ability of math teachers had a positive effect on value perception, confidence, and interest of mathematics at the student level and teacher level. Also, math value perception and math confidence had a positive effect on math interest. and it was confirmed that the teaching ability of math teachers indirectly had a positive effect on math interest by mediating math value perception and math confidence. In addition, the math class activity of applying what was learned to problems had a positive effect on math value perception, but it had a negative effect on math interest. and the class activity of the same ability group had a positive effect on math confidence and math interest. This study presents meaningful implications for math classes in the school field through a multilevel analysis of the student level and the teacher level.
This study aims to analyze low-performing high school students' difficulties in constructed response (CR) mathematics assessments and explore ways to use writing activities to support student learning. The participants took CR assessments, engaged in guided writing activities across 15 lessons, and provided responses to our interviews. The study identified 20 types of student difficulties, which were sorted into two main categories: "mathematical difficulties" and "CR difficulties." The difficult nature of mathematics as a school subject included a lack of understanding of mathematical concepts, students' difficulty with mathematical symbols and notations, and struggles with word problems. Challenges specific to CR assessments included students' difficulties arising from the testing conditions unlike those of multiple-choice items, and included issues related to constructing appropriate responses and psychological barriers. To address these challenges in CR assessments, the study conducted guided writing activities as an intervention, through which six themes were identified: (1) internalization of mathematical concepts, (2) mathematical thinking through relational understanding, (3) diverse problem-solving methods, (4) use of mathematical symbols, (5) reflective thinking, and (6) strategies to overcome psychological barriers.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the role of calculators as a cognitive tool rather than calculating tool in learning elementary school mathematics. The calculator activities on multiplying two numbers ending with 0s or two decimal fractions and mixed four operations were developed, and exploratory lessons with the activities were implemented to three 3rd graders and two 5th graders. The results were shown that calculators provided an alternative effective learning environment: students were able to use heuristic thinking, reason inductively and successfully investigate principles of mathematics through the pattern recognition. And finally, we discussed the heuristic method through utilizing calculators.

This research is based on Jungian psychology. The founder psychoanalysist Jung introduced the notion of unconsciousness. This researcher made Mandala figures as an intermediary between consciousness and unconsciousness, and then took Mandala figures a research starting point. Until now, Mandala has been used therapy tool for emotional stability. But, this researcher tried Mandala coloring to develope cognitive and emotional abilities for early childhood. This paper is a result of experiment to recognize geometric and spacial conceptions for early childhood.
The purpose of this study is to explore how elementary mathematics teachers' adaptations of a reform-oriented mathematics curriculum material in the USA, Everyday Mathematics, influence elementary students' opportunities to learn mathematics. I illustrate how elementary mathematics teachers alter the curriculum material and how such alterations influence their students' opportunities to learn mathematics in their mathematics classrooms. Results suggest that the teachers with Everyday Mathematics did not appear to maintain the cognitive demand of mathematical tasks as appeared in the curriculum material, as set up by the teacher, and as enacted in the classrooms. The results also show that the teachers seemed to omit components including important tasks and suggestions in the curriculum material. As a consequence, the students did not have an opportunity to think and understand mathematics conceptually and meaningfully; they were exposed and encouraged to learn mathematics procedurally.
This study was conducted with the focus on the process of constructing 3 definition and produced definitions as well as gifted students' conceptions of a mathematical definition In the study, the students made five types of regular polyhedrons (section1), observed them and stated their characteristics (section2) and then constructed a definition of regular polyhedrons based on their observations (section3). We divided students into two groups by analyzing students' definitions. One group made definitions that were consist with a mathematical definition of regular polyhedrons, the other one made definitions that were not. We checked if they fulfilled requirements for a mathematical definition. Researchers sought to gain various suggestions through the analysis of the observations and definition laid down by the students and through the characteristics shown by the students in the process of defining the concept.
The purpose of this study is to examine the relationships among attitude towards mathematics, mathematics activity, and mathematics achievement, and compare the relationship between the United States and Korea using the Third International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) database. Since Korea is one of the countries where performance was among the highest and the United States is one of countries where performance was among the middle in mathematics, and many previous researchers reported that attitude towards mathematics and class activities are factors that affect mathematics achievement. the comparison study between two countries would be very important to analyze how factors are affected by country difference. The major research questions are as follows: (1) What constitutes attitude towards mathematics and mathematics activities in the TIMSS database\ulcorner (2) How do these two variables, attitude towards mathematics and mathematics activities, affect mathematics achievement differently between the United States and Korea\ulcorner The result indicates that the relationship between the attitude towards mathematics and the mathematics achievement is stronger for Korea than for the United States; however no country difference is found between the mathematics activities and mathematics achievement. According to this study high mathematics achievement is expected when students' attitude towards mathematics is positively high.
