  • Gender might be interpreted in different roles and meanings depending on social and cultural backgrounds. Based on the premise that understanding of gender may change the direction of mathematics education, this paper confirmed how gender is interpreted in the preceding study of mathematics education in Korea by applying the literature research method. In particular, predictive model based on empirical perspective and gender schema model based on constructivist perspective. Based on the analysis of gender and research methods in cultural and historical composition models based on historical perspectives and postmodernism models based on postmodernism perspectives, this study analyzed trends in domestic mathematics education. As a result of the analysis, it is confirmed that gender is recognized as a biological difference in domestic mathematics education, and that analysis of gender and related elements of mathematics education is mainly used using statistical analysis techniques. This suggests that various approaches to interpreting gender's role in future mathematics education are needed. The existing mathematics education research on gender is composed in terms of gender differences. Since biology at the time did not explain this difference, however, it should now be based on the concept of gender, which is socially defined gender. Accurate understanding of gender and gender can be the basis for clearer understanding and interpretation of gender-related mathematics research.

  • Singaporean students have demonstrated their superior mathematical achievement and positive mathematical dispositions. Against this background, this study compared Korean elementary mathematics textbooks with Singaporean counterparts focusing on the geometry and measurement strand. The analysis was conducted in many aspects, including an overall unit structure, the contents to be covered in each grade, and the methods of introducing essential learning themes. The textbooks were also compared and contrasted with regard to the main characteristics of constructing mathematical contents. Whereas Korean textbooks used block teaming, Singaporean textbooks used repeated teaming. The latter also employed the activity of classifying multiple figures as the main method of introducing concepts. Whereas Korean textbooks consist of typical examples of figures, Singaporean counterparts include various examples consistent with the principle of mathematical variability.

  • The present study was conducted to review the definitions and methods of teaching reflection and then suggest the criteria for analyzing mathematics teaching reflection. The reason for addressing the teaching reflection, which recently attracts considerable attention, was that it would enhance the professional growth of mathematics teachers. The review of the prior studies shows that the hitherto proposed criteria which could be used for analyzing mathematics teaching reflection are inadequate and unsystematic. Further, it was revealed that the self-assessment checklists put forward by previous studies were overly ramified, and thus it seems that an integrative approach should be taken in order to establish the relevant criteria for analyzing mathematics teaching reflection. Considering these findings, the present study suggests the pre-lesson, in-lesson, and post-lesson criteria for analyzing leaching reflection for the subject of mathematics and the attendant questions posed to teachers.

  • In this paper, we sought for instructional methods to guarantee equitable access to successful mathematics learning for students with a low economic status. For the purpose, we analyzed the PISA2012 data to investigate the effect of diversity-inclusive instruction and teacher-student relationship on mathematics achievement of Korean students with a low economic status. The analysis showed that there was a positive correlation between diversity-inclusive instruction and the mathematics achievement of the students. In addition, it indicated a partial mediating effect of teacher-student relationship between diversity-inclusive instruction and the mathematics achievement of the students. Further analysis is necessary to examine the effect of diversity-inclusive instruction on the achievement of students from deprived backgrounds. Based on the results, we discuss the implications for the improvement of mathematics instruction to guarantee educational equity for all students.

  • Developing Mathematical Thinking has been continually emphasized in the Korean curriculum and this emphasis has demonstrated its impact on math textbooks and classes in South Korean schools. This study intends to discover how the Developmental Mechanism of Mathematical Thinking should be reflected through School Mathematics regardless of subfields of Mathematics or its levels. Finally, this study concluded that the Developmental Mechanism of Mathematical Thinking is being reflected on School Mathematics. However, more research in certain areas needs to be done. Through analyzing textbooks, it is certain that the Developmental Mechanism of Mathematical Thinking is being reflected on School Mathematics. Moreover, it appears that students are able to develop new concepts using Developmental Mechanism of Mathematical Thinking. Mathematical Thinking is a subject that many scholars and mathematicians have taken an interest in. Especially with the math curriculum in Korea, designing and implementing classes that would help students develop their mathematical thinking are increasingly being emphasized. This study defines what mathematical development mechanism is, and based on this definition, it further analyzes the math textbook of the revised 2007 curriculum. As a result, textbook developers and math teachers should examine and analyze the concepts that learners need to acquire and how they develop. Further, this study not only presents the concepts students are expected to acquire, but also looks at the flow in which concepts have been introduced to students. It concludes that activities that can help students have an idea of what they are going to learn in the future should be provided during class time.

  • The basic direction of mathematical education for the 21st century is focused on helping student to understand mathematics and developing their problem solving abilities, mathematical disposition and mathematical thinking. Elementary mathematics teachers should help students make sense of mathematics, confident of their ability, and make learning environment comfortable for students to participate in. Through making activities 1 to 100 with digits 1,9,9,6, students improved the interest and preference of students about mathematics. This game is useful to foster students' mathematical thinking(concepts of exponential number expression, roots concept(${\sqrt}$), gauss function([])) and mathematical disposition. If students are helped to be interested in mathematics through mathematical games, they regard mathematics as interesting and challengeable subject to let themselves think many ways.

  • This study investigated the representation and algorithms of western mathematics reflected on the algebra domains of Chosun-Sanhak in the 18th century. I also analyzed the co-occurrences and replacement phenomenon between western algorithms and traditional algorithms. For this purpose, I analyzed nine Chosun mathematics books in the 18th century, including Gusuryak and Gosasibijip. The results of this study are as follows. First, I identified the process of changing to a calculation by writing of western mathematics, from traditional four arithmetical operations using Sandae and the formalized explanation for the proportional concept and proportional expression. Second, I observed the gradual formalization of mathematical representation of the solution for a simultaneous linear equation. Lastly, I identified the change of the solution for square root from traditional Gaebangsul and Jeungseunggaebangbeop to a calculation by the writing of western mathematics.

  • This study is to adjust the Theory in the Mathematics Education, apply it to learning mathematics and to analyse its effectiveness. The results of the study are summarized as follows. First, because learning mathematics is hierarchical, teachers must make and use a task analysis table classified by units. Second, development age and the retention of mathematics concepts are intimately associated with cognitive development theory. Third, learning mathematics through cognitive processes enhances a student's scholastic achievement. Fourth, students interests and self-confidence can be enhanced through the presentation of both examples and non-examples. We cannot understand the higher-order concepts of mathematics by only its definitions. The only way of understanding such concepts is to have experience through suitable examples.

  • The purpose of this study is to verify the research trends on 101 articles about mathematical creativity published in domestic journals. The analysis criteria are as follows: (1)What kind of terms the articles use to refer to the creativity in mathematics education, (2)Whether the researchers conceptualize such the terms or not, (3)Whether the definitions are domain-specific or not, (4)What perspectives, categories and levels of the articles have on creativity. The results of this study show the following. First, numerous articles used 'mathematical creativity' in order to point to the creativity in mathematics education. Second, among the 101 selected articles, 60 (59.4%) provided an explicit definition of the mathematical creativity and 19(18.8%) provided an implicit definition. Among the 79 articles, only 43(54.4%) provided domain-specific definitions. Second, the percentage of articles preferring one perspective over the other 3 perspectives were similar. Third, the rate of articles which focused on press(environment) of all categories (person, process, product, press) was low. Fourth, regarding the levels of creativity, most articles were done on little-c creativity level, on the other hand, the articles having an interest in mini-creativity were very rare. Based on these results, necessities of explicit and domestic-specific definition, whole approach of mathematical creativity, and articles focusing on the mini-creativity level should be reported.
