Problem solving and mathematical applications have been increasingly emphasized in school mathematics over the past ten years. Recently it is recommended that mathematical applications and modeling situations be incorporated into the secondary school curriculum. Many researches on this approach have been conducted in Korea. But unfortunately two thirds of these researches have been studied by graduate students. Therefore, more professional researchers should be concerned with the study related to mathematical modelling activity. This study is planning to investigate and establish i) the concepts and meanings of mathematical model, mathematical modelling, and mathematical modelling process, ii) the properties of problem situations introduced and dealt with in mathematical modelling activity, and iii) relationship between mathematical modelling activity and problem solving activity, and so on. To accomplish this, this study is based on the analysis and comparison of 11 articles published in domestic journals and 22 domestic master papers.
If students can use mathematics to solve their problems and learn the mathematical knowledge through it, they may think mathematics useful and valuable. This study is for the teaching through problem solving in mathematics education, which I consider in terms of the problem-based learning and mathematical modeling. 1 think mathematical modeling is applied to teaching mathematics as a problem-based learning. So I developed the teaching model, and showed the example that students learn the formal and hierarchic mathematics through mathematical modeling.
Nowadays, the big issues on mathematics education are mathematical modeling, mathematization, and problem solving. So, this paper looks about these issues. First, after 1990's, the researchers interested in mathematical model and mathematical modeling. So, this paper looks about mathematical model and mathematical modeling. Second, it looks about Freudenthal' mathematization after 1970's. And then, it compared with mathematical modeling. Also, it looks about that problem solving focused on mathematics education since 1980's. And it compared with mathematical modeling.
In this paper, we reviewed the history of mathematical problem solving since 1900 and investigated problem solving in modeling perspective which is focused on the 21th century. In modeling perspective, problem solvers solve the realistic problem which includes contextualized situations in which mathematics is useful. In this case, the problem is different from the traditional problems which are routine, close, and words problem, etc. Problem solving in modeling perspective emphasizes mathematizing. Most of all, what is important enables students to use mathematics in everyday problem solving situation.
This study aimed to compare and analyze the number and characteristics of modeling problems in chapters related to function contents in International Baccalaureate Diploma Program (IBDP) mathematics textbooks and Korean high school mathematics textbooks. This study implies how the textbooks contributed to the improvement of students' modeling competency. In this study, three textbooks from IBDP and all nine textbooks from the Korean 2015 revised curriculum were selected. All the problems in textbooks were classified into real-world problems and non-real-world problems. Problems classified as real-world problems were once again divided into word problems and modeling problems according to the need to set up mathematical models. Modeling problems were further categorized into standard applications and good modeling problems depending on whether all the necessary information was included in the problem-solving process. Among the 12 textbooks, the textbook with the most modeling problems was the IBDP textbook, 'Math: Applications and Interpretation', which accounted for 50.41% of modeling problems to the total number of problems. This textbook provided learners with significantly higher modeling opportunities than other IBDP and Korean textbooks, which had 2% and 9% modeling problem ratios. In all 12 textbooks, all problems classified as modeling problems appeared as standard applications, and there were no proper modeling problems. Among the six sub-competencies of mathematical modeling, 'mathematical analysis' and 'interpretation and evaluation of results' sub-competencies appeared the most with very similar number of modeling problems, followed by the 'mathematization'. It is expected that the results of this study will help compare the number and ratio of modeling problems in each textbook and provide a better understanding of which modeling sub-competencies appear to what extent in the modeling problems.

The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of mathematical modeling activities on mathematical problem solving abilities and mathematical dispositions in elementary school students. For this study, we administered mathematical modeling activities to fifth graders, which consisted of 8 topics taught over 16 classes. In the results of this study, mathematical modeling activities were statistically proven to be more effective in improving mathematical problem solving abilities and mathematical dispositions compared to traditional textbook-centered lessons. Also, it was found that mathematical modeling activities promoted student's mathematical thinking such as communication, reasoning, reflective thinking and critical thinking. It is a way to raise the formation of desirable mathematical dispositions by actively participating in modeling activities. It is proved that mathematical modeling activities quantitatively and qualitatively affect elementary school students's mathematical learning. Therefore, Educators may recognize the applicability of mathematical modeling on elementary school, and consider changing elementary teaching-learning methods and environment.
The animated discussion about mathematical modeling that had studied consistently in Korea since 1990s has flourished, because mathematical modeling was involved in the teaching-learning method to improve problem solving competency on 2015 reformed mathematics curriculum. In an attempt to re-examine the educational value and necessity of application to school education field, this study was to review the literature of mathematical modeling in mathematical competencies perspective. As a result, mathematical modeling could not only be involved the components of problem solving competency, but also support other competencies; reasoning, creativity-amalgamation, data-processing, communication, and attitude -practice. In this regard, This paper suggested the necessity of the discussion about the position of mathematical modeling in mathematical competencies and the active use of mathematical modeling tasks in mathematics textbook or school classes.
Mathematical modeling is an important part of mathematics education since it can be used or created to find mathematical models to understand real life various situations. Most of mathematical modeling tasks taught and learned currently in secondary school mathematics classes need simple mathematical modelling with one or two variables and produce fixed solutions to the real life problems. But many real life problems involve various and complex variables which can be used to get more proper solutions. Constructing mathematical models to get more appropriate solutions from the real problems having various and complex variables is not easy. In this paper the researcher suggested a model to fit mathematical models to get more appropriate solutions and showed three examples to apply the model in solving real life problems which can be treated in the secondary school mathematics classrooms.

The present study is to focus on thinking about the possibility of using mathematical modeling in the elementary schools. As well-known, mathematical education in Korea, even though students' high achievement in mathematics, has a lot of problems regarding their attitudes toward mathematics. Mathematical modeling is regarded as playing an important role in helping improve the current problems embedded in elementary mathematics education. Thus, this study reviewed the background that mathematical modeling attracted lots of attentions by many mathematics researchers, the definitions of mathematical modeling and the similarities and differences between problem solving and mathematical modeling. In addition, the processes and main features of well-known three representative models of mathematical modeling were reviewed, and each case of research on mathematical modeling in the elementary schools in Korea and foreign countries was introduced, respectively. Finally, this study suggests that mathematical modeling needs to be dealt with in the elementary school curriculum, together with the improvement of teachers' recognition for mathematical modeling.
