Design Modification of Marine Turning Gear Based on Spur Planetary Gear (스퍼 유성감속기 기반 선박용 터닝기어의 설계 변경)

  • A marine turning gear controls the position of the piston-crank mechanism by rotating the flywheel of the marine engine at a low speed, which is the main auxiliary machine that enables the disassembly and maintenance of the engine. In this study, the safety factor for surface durability and tooth bending strength was improved by the design modification of the marine turning gear based on the spur planetary gear. Angular velocity, torque, and efficiency of the turning gear were measured using a reliability evaluation tester, and a multibody dynamics model for analysis corresponding to the test results was developed. Finally, it was confirmed that the design improvements improved the tooth surface damage of the sun gear in the 3rd reduction stage.

Development of Marine Turning Gear Based on Helical Planetary Reducer (헬리컬 유성감속기 기반 선박용 터닝기어 개발)

  • A marine turning gear is the main auxiliary machine that enables the disassembly of and maintenance on the main engines. In this study, a marine turning gear based on a helical planetary reducer was developed through analysis of a marine turning gear based on a spur planetary reducer. Nonlinear numerical analysis was performed to determine the ideal contact ratio between the sun gear and the idle gear. Based on this, the surface durability, tooth bending strength, and contact ratio were calculated. In addition, the helix direction was selected to utilize the existing bearings. Gears were manufactured based on the helical gear design values, and the turning gear was evaluated using the FTA standards of MAN Co. Ltd. As a result, a lifetime of 3,000 to 5,000 hours was verified, the maximum torque measured was 105kNm, and the efficiency was measured to be 87.4%.

Reduction Gear Stability Estimation due to Torque Variation on the Marine Propulsion System with High-speed Four Stroke Diesel Engine (고속 4행정 디젤엔진을 갖는 선박 추진시스템에서 토크변동에 의한 감속기어 안정성 평가)

  • Maritime safety has been more critical recently due to the occurrence of shipboard accidents involving prime movers. As such, the propulsion shafting design and construction plays a vital role in the safe operation of the vessel other than focusing on being cost-efficient. Smaller vessels propulsion shafting system normally install high speed four-stroke diesel engine with reduction gear for propulsion efficiency. Due to higher cylinder combustion pressures, flexible couplings are employed to reduce the increased vibratory torque. In this paper, an actual vibration measurement and theoretical analysis was carried out on a propulsion shafting with V18.3L engine installed on small car-ferry and revealed higher torsional vibration. Hence, a rubber-block type flexible coupling was installed to attenuate the transmitted vibratory torque. Considering the flexible coupling application factor, reduction gear stability due to torque variation was analyzed in accordance with IACS(International Association of Classification Societies) M56 and the results are presented herein.

  • Korea is the best country for ship-building. But nowadays, the speedboat and yacht are not mostly developed yet. For the sleek lines of ship, more innovative transmission system should be obtained in the ship industry. In general, marine transmissions often use the straight shafts and the helical gears. So it makes problem that engine-room requires large space. In this case, conical gear is the best solution for this. Until now, technology of conical gear is not generalized, but it will be increased more through many applications. So, in order to get conical gear design technology by ourselves, this thesis is conducted. This paper was written to gain useful information of marine gearbox design applied conical gear through the measurement of backlash, computer analysis and tooth contact test of helical conical involute gear pairs.

Performance Review of a Cycloid Speed Reducer for Ship Transport Vehicles using FEM (유한요소해석을 이용한 선박수송차량용 사이클로이드 감속기의 성능 검토)

  • A cycloid speed reducer is one of the rotational speed regulation devices of the machinery. A cycloid speed reducer has an advantage of transmitting high torque, but is known to be unsuitable for high speed rotation. However, it is almost impossible in an analytical method to find a use limit speed when installing such a speed reducer in a 200ton loading transporter. In this research the cycloid reducer was simulated to get its performance depending on friction energy loss in time domain by using by LS-DYNA. The maximum torque of the cycloid speed reducer is 3.5ton-m, so the comparison of analysis results between a case of 60rpm rotation and a case of 162rpm rotation with such a torque showed the following results. In the case of 60rpm rotation, the maximum stress appearing in the RV gear and the pin gear was 463MPa and 507MPa. Lost power due to friction was 50kW; In the case of 162rpm rotation, the maximum stress appearing in the RV gear and the pin gear was 550MPa and 538MPa. Lost power due to friction was 175kW, which was shown to be almost impossible to use.

  • Medium and high speed marine diesel engines have been widely used as prime mover in small car ferries and fishing vessels with reduction gear. These propulsion shafting system should be installed and matched the elastic coupling between engine and reduction gear to isolate the vibratory torque. In this paper, the elastic dynamic characteristics of coupling with rubber type circular segments is confirmed by the theoretical analysis using the FEM and the hydraulic exciting test at shop. And its adaptation is investigated in the torsional vibration test in factory shop.
