Structure and optical properties of ZnO epilayers grown on oxygen- and hydrogen-plasma treated sapphire substrates by plasma-assisted molecular beam epitaxy (denoted as samples A and B, respectively) have been investigated by various techniques. The crystal quality and structural properties of the surface for the ZnO epilayers were investigated by high-resolution X-ray diffraction and atomic force microscope. For investigating the optical properties of excitonic transition of ZnO, we carried out photoluminescence experiments as a function of temperature. The free exciton, bound exciton emission and their phonon replicas were investigated as a function of temperature from 10 to 300 K, and the intensity of excitonic PL peak emission from the sample A is found to be higher than that of sample B. From the results, we found that sample A has better crystal structure quality and optical properties as compared to sample B. The number of oxygen vacancies may be decreased in sample A, resulting in an enhancement of the crystal quality and a higher intensity of excitonic emission band as compared to sample B.

The effect of introducing oxygen functional groups by oxygen plasma treatment of activated carbon on adsorption properties of cesium ions was investigated. During the oxygen plasma treatment, the frequency, power, and oxygen gas flow rates were fixed at 100 kHz, 80 W, and 60 sccm, respectively, while the reaction time was varied. Under the experimental conditions, the amount of cesium ion adsorption increased as the content of oxygen groups on C-O-C and O=C-O bonds increased when the reaction time with oxygen gas was 10 minutes. However, when the reaction time increased to 15 minutes, the oxygen functional group content decreased resulting in the decrease of the adsorbed cesium ion amount. On the other hand, unlike the oxygen content of the surface-treated activated carbon, the specific surface area and pore properties were hardly affected by the oxygen plasma reaction time. As a result, the oxygen plasma-treated activated carbon improved the cesium ion removal rate by up to 97.3% compared to that of the untreated activated carbon. This is considered to be due to the content of oxygen groups on C-O-C and O=C-O bonds introduced on the surface of the activated carbon through oxygen plasma treatment.
We investigated optical emission of oxygen plasma discharged by 13.56 MHz radio frequency (rf) by using optical emission spectroscopy (OES). Experimental measurement is done at a range of oxygen flow rate of 1$\sim$20 seem, rf power of 25$\sim$250 W, and orifice 3 and 5 mm in diameter. When oxygen plasma was generated, typical emission spectra for oxygen plasma were observed regardless of diameter of orifice. Strong atomic emission lines are observe at 776.8 an 843.9 nm, corresponding to the $3p^{5}P-3s^{5}S^{0}$ and $3p^{3}P-3s^{3}S^{0}$ transitions, respectively. The emission intensity of line at 776.8 and 843.9 nm increased with increasing the oxygen flow rate and rf power. The increasing rate of emission intensity of 776.8 nm line was larger than that of 843.9 nm line. When the diameter of orifice was 3 mm, the oxygen plasma was more stably generated than orifice 5 mm in diameter.
The possibility of a low-temperature argon plasma treatment as a mean of restoration technology for contaminated invaluable archive materials and artefacts, and evidencing documents was investigated along with an oxygen plasma treatment for comparison. For this purpose, the degree of color changes, ${\Delta}E^*ab$, and surface morphological changes due to plasma treatments as an evaluation of removal performance of artificial contaminants such as brilliant green dye and carbon deposit on cellulose acetate and plain paper as matrices, respectively, were measured and analyzed using a spectrophotometer and a field emission scanning electron microscope. Compared to the argon plasma treatment with sputtering characteristic, that of the oxygen plasma with characteristic of an oxidation reaction has shown superior results in removing the contaminants; the oxygen plasma has proven to damage the matrices significantly due to its oxidative characteristic, and post-plasma reactions has anticipated to be also detrimental to the surfaces, whereas, the problems caused by the counterpart has resulted in being negligible and rather has thought to be an appropriate mean for delicate restoration and/or removal operations of contaminants.

In this study, activated carbon fibers were treated with oxygen plasma to investigate gas sensing properties of the dimethyl methylphosphonate (DMMP), which is a simulant gas of the chemical warfare agent, according to oxygen functional group contents. As the flow rate of oxygen plasma treatment increased, oxygen groups were introduced to the surface of activated carbon fibers from 6.90 up to 36.6%, increasing the -OH group which influences the DMMP gas sensing properties. However, as the flow rate of oxygen plasma increases, the specific surface area tends to decrease because etching on the surface of activated carbon fibers occurs due to active species generated during the oxygen plasma treatment. The resistance change rate of the DMMP gas sensor increased from 4.2 up to 25.1% as the oxygen plasma treatment flow rate increased. This is attributed to the hydrogen bonding between DMMP gas and introduced hydroxyl functional group on activated carbon fibers by the oxygen plasma treatment. Therefore, the oxygen plasma is considered to be one of the important surface treatment methods for detecting chemical warfare agents at room temperature.
Two dimensional simulation results of a capacitively coupled oxygen plasma in a cylindrical reactor geometry are presented. Detailed electron impact reaction rates, which strongly depend on electron energy, are computed from collision cross sections of electrons with $O_2$ and O. Through the coupling of a three moment plasma model with a neutral chemistry/transport model are predicted spatiotemporal distributions of both charged species (electron, $O_2{^+}$, $O^+$, $O_2{^-}$, and $O^-$) and neutral species including ground states ($O_2$ and O) and metastables, known to play important roles in oxygen plasma, such as $O_2(a^1{\Delta}_g)$, $O_2(b^1{{\Sigma}_g}^+)$, $O(^1D)$, and $O(^1S)$. The simulation results clearly verify the existence of a double layer near sheath boundaries in the electronegative plasma.
The characteristics of torch-type atmospheric pressure plasma and its sterilization effects have been analyzed. The length of plasma flame was varied with the level of applied voltage and the mixture gases composed of argon and oxygen. The effect of plasma flame on the temperature increase of surface treated was limited to $43^{\circ}C$ as a maximum temperature under exposing time of 10 min. The sterilization for E. coli was strongly affected by the applied voltage, the oxygen ratio in the mixture gas and the treatment time. At a high concentration of ozone, the increase of treatment time under the direct contact with plasma flame yields to maximize the effect of the sterilization on E. coli.
The sterilization effects of atmospheric pressure plasma with the mixture of argon and oxygen were analyzed. The plasma reactor with the shape of dielectric barrier discharge produced the uniform distribution of glow discharge and generated ozone gas effectively according to the various process parameters. The sterilization for E. coli was affected by power, oxygen ratio in the mixture gas, treatment time and distance between reactor and sample. The concentration of ozone was a major source for the sterilization of E. coli, which was enhanced by the increase of power and oxygen ratio. In this study, the effect of atmospheric pressure plasma treatment for the sterilization was confirmed and its result can deliver the atmospheric pressure plasma treatment as the novel sterilization method instead of conventional methods.
The change in work function was studied on Indium-Tin-Oxide(ITO) surface after O-plasma treatment using $\gamma$-Focused ion Beam($\gamma$-FIB). As the surface of ITO experienced more O-plasma treatment, both the surface resistivity and the work function got higher. Auger Electron Spectroscopy identified the increase of oxygen as well as the decrease of Sn. The rise of work function and surface resistivity is considered to be due to the change in oxygen and Sn on the surface of ITO.
