  • This study was conducted to find ways to utilize human-centered IT in caring for elderly people who live alone. Through focus group interviews with experts, this study investigated the problems with delivery system, and ethical issues. Problems such as lack of trust, supplier-centered care, and uniform service provision were derived as major problems in the delivery system. These findings indicate that IT should be used as an auxiliary means of face-to-face services and to be controllable and convenient. Issues such as "guaranteeing the right to self-determination," "protecting privacy," "sufficiently guaranteeing the right to know," and "encompassing blind spots" were raised as important ethical issues related to human-centered IT utilization. Based on the research results, this study presented the necessity of designing user-centered information technology and the necessity of developing ethical indicators for the use of human-centered technology.

  • As society becomes more complex and advanced, the risk of accidents is inevitably increased, and this is an opportunity to increase the occurrence of not only congenital disabilities but also acquired disabilities. In this situation, the use of rehabilitation robots, a complex of advanced technologies, is expected to increase steadily in the future. So the authors would take a look the technological trends and future development prospects of domestic and foreign rehabilitation robots. Until now, disability assistive robot technology has been mainly developed in the field of supporting disability with walking disabilities or work limitations rather than cognitive disabilities. However, another issue of population aging is that cognitive impairment has the potential to increase, so development of a disability assistance robot that secures user safety must be actively promoted. It is thought that empirical results should be derived and converged

  • In this paper, we propose a psychological state estimation process that computes children's attention and tension in response to training stimuli. Joint attention was adopted as the training stimulus required for behavioral intervention, and the Discrete trial training (DTT) technique was applied as the training protocol. Three types of training stimulation contents are composed to check the user's attention and tension level and provided mounted on a character-shaped tabletop robot. Then, the gaze response to the user's training stimulus is estimated with the vision-based head pose recognition and geometrical calculation model, and the nervous system response is analyzed using the PPG and GSR bio-signals using heart rate variability(HRV) and histogram techniques. Through experiments using robots, it was confirmed that the psychological response of users to training contents on joint attention could be quantified.

  • This paper describes the development of a wearable robot to assist the elbow muscle for use by elderly workers in aging societies. Various previously developed wearable robots have drawbacks in terms of their price, portability, and slow recognition of the wearer's intention. In this paper, emphasis is placed on the following features to minimize these drawbacks. The first feature is that an actuator is attached only at the elbow joint that withstands the highest moment during arm motion to reduce the weight, volume, and price of the robot and increase its practicality. The second is that operation of the wearable robot is divided into two modes, a tracking mode and a muscle strengthening mode, and the robot can automatically switch between these modes by analyzing the wearer's intention through the brachial muscle strength measuring device developed in this study. The assistive performance of the developed wearable robot is experimentally verified by motion tracking experiments without an external load and muscle strengthening experiments with an external load. During the muscle strengthening experiments, the power of the muscle of the upper arm is measured by a commercial electromyography (EMG) sensor. Motion tracking performance at a speed of $120^{\circ}/s$ and muscle assistance of over 60 % were obtained using our robot.

  • Social participation of the elderly and people with disabilities continuously becomes more active due to improvement of social systems and technological development. Various assistive systems, such as intelligence robots and intelligence home systems, have been developed to support the social participation, and obviously contributed to independent lives of the elderly and people with disabilities. These systems, however, usually require expensive special hardware. To relieve a financial burden software-oriented approaches, which utilizes existing hardware such as laptops, can be an alternative. The software should be developed considering users with physical limitation and without much knowledge of computers. This paper suggests software-oriented approaches to solve these problems and describes an actual development procedure of the software with related theories. We also introduce an unified user interface for a special work chair as a real application.

  • How do robots interact with the elderly? In this paper, we analyze the contexts of interaction between robots and the elderly and the role of mediators in initiating, facilitating, and maintaining the interaction. We do not attempt to evaluate the robot's performance or measure the impact of robots on the elderly. Instead, we focus on the circumstances and contexts within which a robot is situated as it interacts with the elderly. Our premise is that the success of human-robot interaction does not depend solely on the robot's technical capability, but also on the pre-arranged settings and local contingencies at the site of interaction. We select three television shows that feature robots for the elderly and one "dementia-prevention" robot in a regional healthcare center as our sites for observing robot-elderly interaction: "Grandma's Robot"(tvN), "Co-existence Experiment''(JTBC), "Future Diary"(MBC), and the Silbot class in Suwon. By analyzing verbal and non-verbal interactions between the elderly and the robots in these programs, we point out that in most cases the robots and the elderly do not meet one-to-one; the interaction is usually mediated by an actor who is not an old person. These mediators are not temporary or secondary components in the robot-elderly interaction; they play a key role in the relationship by arranging the first meeting, triggering initial interactions, and carefully observing unfolding interactions. At critical moments, the mediators prevent the interaction from falling apart by intervening verbally or physically. Based on our observation of the robot-elderly interaction, we argue that we can better understand and evaluate the human-robot interaction in general by paying attention to the existence and role of the mediators. We suggest that researchers in human-robot interaction should expand their analytical focus from one-to-one interactions between humans and robots to human-robot-human interactions in diverse real-world situations.
