  • This study investigated arsenic speciation and risk assesment in 30 samples of hijiki purchased from local market in 10 Korean cities. The mean arsenic concentration of the hijiki samples was 45.65 mg/kg (dryness; moisture content of 91.1${\pm}$1.6%), and the major arsenic compound was arsenate [As(V)]. The concentrations of As(V) and As(III), as inorganic arsenic compounds, were detected to be 40.36 mg/kg and 0.37 mg/kg, respectively, and made up 88.6% (40.46 mg/kg) of the arsenic in the hijiki. Among the samples, the highest inorganic arsenic concentration was identified at 9.19 mg/kg (wet), and for an adult with a body weight of 60 kg was within an acceptable level as 0.7% (6.43 mg/60 kg/week) when compared with the provisional tolerable weekly intake (PTWI) (900 mg/60 kg/week), and would be considered safe with respect to health-hazardous effects.

  • A water culture experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of As content in a culture solution on the water status and growth of rice plants. Rice (Oryza sativa L. Line. Iri 316) seeds were germinated in bentonite and cultivated there for 30 days. Rice seedlings were transplanted into 3.5l pots containing the culture solution on May 1, 1985 and allowed to grow without As treatment for one month. Afterwards, they were grown in a culture solution maintaining the final concentration of As, 0, 1, 5, 10 and 15mg/1 renewing in the solution dissolved sodium arsenate at intervals of 3 to 7 days. Plants were cultivated in the green house during the growing period and harvested 60 days after As treatment. The results obtained were as follows: Transpiration of rice plants was decreased with the increase of the As level in the culture solution. Stomatal diffusive resistance and leaf temperature increased with increase of As levels though the humidity and the air flow rate in leaf decreased. Air flow rate, transpiration and stomatal diffusive resistance showed a highly significant correlation with As contents in shoots and roots of rice plants: Espally The air flow rate and transpiration revealed a significantly higher correlation with As contents in the root than that in the shoot, but diffusive resistance showed adverse tendency. High levels of As in the culture solution depressed plant height, no. of tillers, leaf width and dry weight of plant remarkably. Typical symptoms of As toxicity were root discoloration, and necrosis of leaf tips and margins, and leaf rolling during the sunny daytime were also another symptoms.

  • Recently, there has been a growing interest in the development of non-sintered binder to reduce CO2 emissions from the cement clinker manufacturing process and a number of studies have been conducted on fly ashes as an industrial by-product. However, in order to utilize fly ashes as a non-sintered binder, it is necessary to solve problems such as safety issues and economical efficiency due to use of an alkali activator. This study evaluates the material properties and compressive strength characteristics of three types of circulating fluidized bed boiler ashes. As a result, it was confirmed that the characteristics of each binder vary depending on the location of the power plant and the types of raw materials. In addition, it has been confirmed that the fluidized bed boiler ash shows a high compressive strength and can be used sufficiently as an non-sintered binder.

  • The purpose of this study was to give fluidizing properties to non-sirtered cement made using by-products that can replace Portland cement by using a fluidizing agent. Blast furnace slag, C-type fly ash, and F-type fly ash were used for non-sirtered cement, and sand was used for aggregate. The amount of fluidizing agent used was fixed at 1%, and the water-cement ratio (W/C) was different by setting the binder blending ratio of the non-sintered cement differently, and the fluidity test and flow were compared. As a result of the experiment, when the flow standard was 170mm when the fluidizing agent was used, the fluidizing properties were shown at an average water-cement ratio (W/C) of 36%. Through this study, it was confirmed that the fluidizing properties appeared when the fluidizing agent was used in non-sintered cement.
