  • This study analyzes how statistical literacy is implemented along with the statistical problem-solving process as described in the Statistical Estimation Unit of the textbook by the 2015 revised mathematics curriculum. The analytical framework was developed from the literature, and consists of 'context', 'variability', 'mathematical and statistical knowledge', 'using of technological instruments', 'critical attitude', and 'communication'. From the perspective of the statistical problem-solving process, the analysis revealed that many tasks equivalent to 'Analyzing Data' but lacked tasks related to 'Interpreting Results' and 'Formulating Questions'. As a result of analyzing the reflection of each element of statistical literacy, 'mathematical and statistical knowledge' was the most common task, but 'critical attitude' and 'using of technological instruments' were rarely dealt with. Based on the results of this textbook analysis, it was intended to provide implications for improving the curriculum and the development of textbooks for the growth of statistical literacy.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the characteristics of problem making of 19 mathematically gifted students in junior high school. In this study, we examined the expansion and sophistication of the problems made by gifted students, focusing on the analysis framework proposed in the previous research. Next, the problem making by gifted students were categorized into 'horizontal problem making' and 'vertical problem making.' As a result of this study, it was found that problem making by gifted students was not enough in terms of extension and sophistication. In addition, gifted students made problems in the direction of decreasing complexity than original problems when creating new problems, and considered the conditions presented in the original text separately but not comprehensively.

  • This study conducted a multiple mediation analysis using sub-factors of basic psychological needs (BPNs) as mediators in the relationship between problem gambling and stress of gambling addicts to confirm that BPNs and stress, which affect gambling addiction, may be the result of problem gambling and to find effective intervention strategies. A total of 206 adults gambling addicts were screened by using CPGI. Descriptive statistics, correlation, hierarchical regression, and mediation analysis were conducted. Hierarchical regression analysis results yielded that problem gambling and sub-factors of BPNs were significant predictors of stress when controlling for gender and debt. The sub-factors of BPNs mediated the relationship between problem gambling and stress. These results indicated that BPNs and stress are not only the causes of gambling addiction but also the results from the harmful consequences of gambling addiction. The study supported the possibility of the psychological process of "Deficits of BPNs (of gambling users) → stress (of gambling users) → problem gambling → gambling addiction (of gambling addicts) → problem gambling → Deficits of BPNs (of gambling addicts) → stress (of gambling addicts)" among the variables and provided clinical implications for problem gambling counseling. Lastly, the limitations of this study and suggestions for further study were discussed.

  • The purpose of the study is to investigate the problem solving abilities of nursing students in case of simulation-based emergency care for respiratory distress patients. For this study, 117 third year nursing students participated in the adult simulation practice from April 22 to May 31, 2013. The results of the study revealed that problem solving abilities after simulation practice were significantly greater than those after self-directed learning(t=2.59, p=.010). In the analysis of subcategories of problem solving abilities, there were significant differences in the definition of problem solving (t=2.95, p=.004), the device of problem solutions(t=2.10, p=.0.37), and the review of problem resolutions(t=3.06, p=.002). Based on these results, the study confirmed that the simulation practice was an effective teaching method for problem solving skills.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the factors related to problem drinking in male workers according to occupational classes. Data were derived from the 2012 Korean National Survey on male workers. A total of 391 office workers, 707 manufacturing workers, and 309 service workers participated in this study. Data were analyzed using Rao-Scott X2X2-test, simple and multiple logistic regressions. Problem drinking was defined as 88 points in the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test. The problem drinking rates were 45.1% in office workers, 39.1% in manufacturing, and 42.3% in service. In office workers, the factor related to problem drinking was only smoking. In manufacturing workers, the factors related to problem drinking were spouse, smoking and prevalence of Diabetes. In service workers, the factors related to problem drinking were age and smoking. Therefore, different intervention should be developed for each occupational class in order to manage the problem drinking in male workers.

  • Problem solving has been consistently emphasized in national mathematics curricula, whereas the foci of such an emphasis have been changed. Given this background, this study traced down major changes in emphasizing problem solving from the first national mathematics curriculum to the most recent 2015 curriculum. In particular, both the 2009 and the 2015 revised curricula were analyzed in detail to figure out the latest emphasis and trends. This paper then investigated whether a series of mathematics textbooks were aligned to the emphases of recent curricula. It finally discussed some issues that we need to reconsider with regards to problems, problem solving strategies, and the process of problem solving. As such, this study is expected to provide textbook developers with detailed implications on how to employ problem solving in new series of textbooks.

  • Due to the singularity of the within-class scatter, linear discriminant analysis (LDA) becomes ill-posed for small sample size (SSS) problems. An extension of LDA, the null space-based LDA (NLDA) provides good discriminant performances for SSS problems. In this paper, by applying the Lagrange technique, the procedure of transforming the problem of finding the feature extractor of NLDA into a linear equation problem is derived.
