  • The purpose of this study was to examine relationships between parent-adolescent communication, family cohesion and family adaptability perceived by Korean adolescents resident in Korea (K-K) and Korean adolescents resident in America (K-A). Subjects were selected from among middle and high school, undergraduate and graduate school students in Korea (N=555) and counterpart students in Los Angeles (N=296). The survey instruments were the Parent-Adolescent Communication Inventory (Barnes & Olson, 1982) and FACES III (Bell, Olson, & Partner, 1982). Major findings were that : (1) K-A adolescents engaged in open communication with their parents more than K-K adolescents. (2) K-A families communicated about their health and life styles more frequently than K-K families, while K-K families communicated about school problems and problems with friends more than K-A families. (3) In both groups, family cohesion was related to family adaptability. That is, when family cohesion was high, family adaptability was also high. (4) When communication styles were open, perceived family cohesion and adaptability was high.

  • This study has analyzed the characteristics of the French method of childrearing which is drawing attention recently based on the psychoanalytic theory of François Dolto, the so-called French people's godmother, the child psychoanalyst. Dolto is a psychoanalyst who represents France and is the unique character who was loved by the public and established unique frame of child psychoanalytic analysis by combining psychoanalysis and pediatrics. She cherished communication through conversation with infants and toddlers and has perceived even the babies who can not speak yet as a lingual being who understands words. This study has selected domestically published books on French method of childrearing and documentary broadcasting program which dealt with childrearing, classified the common theme and deducted four core words, which are temperance, perseverance, waiting, autonomy and rule, authority and respect and independence and self-reliance. These core themes have been explained based on Dolto's theory of communication, infans, castration, subject and others and desire etc. Also, a new direction has been proposed for the child education in households and childrearing by Korean parents through French method of childrearing.

Mother-adolescent communication and depression account for 46.4% of variance in suicide ideation of adolescents. • Objective: The main purpose of this study was to examine the direct and indirect effects of parent-adolescent communication (through adolescent optimism) on adolescent conflict-coping styles. Methods: A total of 337 high school students participated in this study. They completed questionnaires about communications with their parents and their own optimism and conflict-coping styles. Data were analyzed using t-tests, correlations, and SEM. Results: Neither father- nor mother-adolescent communication had direct effects on adolescent conflict-coping styles. However, mother-adolescent communication had an indirect effect on conflict-coping styles, mediated by adolescent optimism. Adolescents who had open communication with mothers displayed higher levels of optimism, which led to more positive conflict-coping styles. In addition, multigroup analyses revealed that there were significant gender differences in direct and indirect effects. For boys, mother-adolescent communication directly influenced adolescent conflict-coping styles; however, father-adolescent communication did not directly or indirectly affect adolescent conflict-coping styles. For girls, neither father- nor mother-adolescent communication had direct effects on conflict-coping styles; only optimism had a significant effect on conflict-coping styles. Conclusion: The findings from this study suggest that communication with mothers and fathers have different effects on adolescents' conflict-coping styles. These findings have implications for future research and practice by emphasizing the importance of parent-adolescent communication and optimism in designing conflict-coping programs for adolescents.

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study was to explore the influential factors of family function, parent-child communication, and family satisfaction on Korean adolescents game use. Methods: The participants were 940 adolescents in Seoul. A structured questionnaire was used to collect data. The study variables were family function, parent-child communication, family satisfaction, and game use. Results: Game use was different by gender, age, time to spend in game during weekdays and weekend. Game use had significant negative correlations with family cohesion, family adaptability, communication with father, communication with mother, and family satisfaction. Multiple regression analysis showed that 20.3% of the game use was explained by gender, communication with mother, hours of playing games during weekdays, family adaptability, and hours of playing games during weekend. Conclusions: These results suggest that being male and lack of communication with mother, low family adaptability, game hours during weekdays and weekend can be potential risk factors for excessive game use in the adolescents, which should by considered in developing a prevention program for excessive game use focused on family factors.

  • This study examined the effects of family environmental variables and parent-child communication on the self-esteem of delinquent and non-delinquent juveniles. For this study, a questionnaire was administered to 117 non-delinquent juveniles living with their parents as high school students and 98 delinquent juveniles aged 15~18 who live in detention centers for adolescence. The data was analyzed using t-test, cross-tab, correlation, and hierarchical multiple regression analysis with SPSS /PC window program. Based on these results, the following conclusions were drawn. First, it was found that non-delinquent juveniles show a more open communication style with their parents than delinquent juveniles. Furthermore, a high level of parent-child communication was associated with high self-esteem in adolescents. Second, although physical environment such as family type or economic status influences an adolescents' self-esteem, the degree of positive parent-child communication style has a much greater effect on an adolescents' self-esteem. Finally, in terms of the effects of family environmental variables and parent-child communication style on self-esteem, parent-child communication style has a stronger effect on delinquent juveniles than non-delinquent juveniles. These results shows the importance of communication style between parent and child, especially for families with delinquent juveniles.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the effects of parent-child communication, and the self-efficacy of middle school students on school adjustment. The data was collected from 285 middle school students living in Kwangju. For statistical analysis, Cronbach' $\alpha$, t-test, one-way ANOVA, Scheffe's multiple Comparison Analysis, LSD and hierarchical regression analysis were used. The results were summarized as follows : concerning connections between demographic variables and parent-child communication, the education of the father made the most significant difference, followed by living standard, free time for communication with the father, and free time for communication with the mother. The level of communication with parent made a significant difference to each sub-factor of school adjustment. As a result of making a hierarchical regression analysis to find out the relative impact of the demographic variables on school adjustment, self-efficacy was identified as the most important variable and predictor of school adjustment. The independent variables exercised a different influence on the sub-factors of school adjustment. These results indicated that adolescent's self-efficacy is the most important variable to improve the school adjustment of students.
