  • Using the finite element method and Taguchi's design technique, the displacement in vertical direction, von Mises stress, and strain energy of the corrugation damper have been analyzed as functions of the extruded length and the thickness of the corrugation damper, and the upper and lower corner radii of the damper. The optimized profile design elements of a corrugation damper are very important for increasing a strain energy absorption capacity of a helmet structure, which is attacked by impulsive external forces. In this study, the optimized design data based on the Taguchi's method was computed as a corrugation damper length of L = 20 mm, a damper thickness of t = 2 mm, the upper corner radius of $R_1=4\;mm$, and the lower corner radius of $R_2=3\;mm$. The optimized design parameters of a corrugation damper indicated that the thickness and extruded length of a corrugation damper may affect to increase the strain energy, which absorbs the impact forces of the helmet.

  • Bolts and nuts are widely used to fasten mechanical parts together in machines and structures. The primary role of a nut is to maintain the axial force of a bolt. In this paper, a new type of a lock nut that uses a spring is studied. To have a spring within a nut, a cocking process to narrow the top of the nut is adopted, but cracking occurred in the process. In this study, strain of an initial model is measured using the finite element analysis program, MSC/Marc. The occurrence of the crack was studied by comparing the maximum observed strain of a model with the maximum strain indicated by an accurate stress-strain diagram of 1020 steel. Then, the structure of the lock nut was optimized by response surface analysis to prevent cracking. The prototype of the lock nut was manufactured on the basis of the optimization result, and cracking did not occur.

  • Deformational characteristics of subbase materials are important parameters in the mechanistic design of pavement. The subbase materials are mostly unbound granular materials in Korea, and seven representative subbase materials were collected for testing from the pavement construction sites. To evaluate the deformational characteristics of subbase materials, RC/TS, TX and FF-RC tests were performed. The effects of various variables on modulus were studied. The variation in the modulus with number of loading cycles and loading frequency are very small and can be ignored in a practical sense. The modulus of subbase materials were significantly affected by confining pressure and strain level. The representative modulus reduction curve and constitutive models for Korean subbase materials were suggested.

  • Objection of this study is to present the three-dimensional material nonlinear analysis of reinforced concrete. A concrete is idealized with three-dimensional 16-node solid element including triaxial nonlinear stress-strain behavior, cracking, crushing and strain softening: a steel with three-dimensional 3 node truss element including elastic-plastic behavior with strain hardening. The cracked shear retention factor is introduced to estimate the effective shear modulus con sidering aggregate interlock after c:racking and a modified newton method is used to obtain a nu merical solution. Numerical results in a gauss point is displayed graphically. Numerical examples of Krahl's reinforced concrete beam and Hedgreds shell are selected to compare with the experimental and numerical results.

  • In order to resolve a common numerical integration inaccuracy of meshfree methods, we introduce an improved natural clement method called Petrov-Galerkin natural element method(PG-NEM). While Laplace basis function is being taken for the trial shape function, the test shape function in the present method is differently defined such that its support becomes a union of Delaunay triangles. This approach eliminates the inconsistency of tile support of integrand function with the regular integration domain, and which preserves both simplicity and accuracy in the numerical integration. In this paper, the validity of the PG-NEM is verified through the representative benchmark problems in 2-d linear elasticity. For the comparison, we also analyze the problems using the conventional Bubnov-Galerkin natural element method(BG-NEM) and constant strain finite clement method(CS-FEM). From the patch test and assessment on convergence rate, we can confirm the superiority of the proposed meshfree method.

  • This study introduces a smoothed finite-element implementation into the phase-field framework. In recent years, the phase-field method has recieved considerable attention in crack initiation and propagation since the method needs no further treatment to express the crack growth path. In the phase-field method, high strain-energy accuracy is needed to capture the complex crack growth path; thus, it is obtained in the framework of the smoothed finite-element method. The salient feature of the smoothed finite-element method is that the finite element cells are divided into sub-cells and each sub-cell is rebuilt as a smoothing domain where smoothed strain energy is calculated. An adaptive quadtree refinement is also employed in the present framework to avoid the computational burden. Numerical experiments are performed to investigate the performance of the proposed approach, compared with that of the finite-element method and the reference solutions.

  • Comparing with general optical fiber sensors performing localized measurement, distributed optical fiber sensors can measure along an optical fiber, and they have large measuring range. The surface-mounting method with epoxy adhesive is general in attaching optical fiber sensors to structures, This is also appliable to the structural integrity monitoring with Brillouin-scattering distributed optical fiber sensors. In this paper, Brillouin-scattering distributed optical fiber sensors, which are attached to the surface of a structure with epoxy adhesive, was verified with the finite element method. From the analysis results of strain transfer through the structure, optical fiber coating, cladding and core, the strain transfer rates were calculated. And the influence of the epoxy free-end was also studied.

  • The three truss models(equilibrium truss model, Mohr compatibility truss model, and the soften truss model) based on a rotating angle is called the rotating-angle model. The three rotating-angle models have a common weakness: they are incapable of predicting the so-called "contribution of concrete". To take into account this "contribution of concrete", the modern truss model(MCFT, STM) treats a cracked reinforced concrete element as a continuous material. By combining the equilibrium, compatibility, and the softened stress-strain relationship of concrete in biaxial state, MTM is capable of producing the nonlinear analysis of reinforced concrete structures composed of membrane element. In this paper, an efficient algorithm is proposed for the solution of proposed model incorporated with failure criteria. This algorithm is used to analyze the behavior of reinforced membrane element using the results of Hsu test.
