Finite Element Analysis on the Ground Behavior for Tunnel with Pipe-roof (파이프루프공법이 적용된 터널의 지반거동 유한요소 해석)

  • Pipe-roof method is one of the mostly used method to prevent the ground subsidence during the tunnel construction. As pipe-roof method has made technical advancement and performance improvement, it suggested to utilize pipe-roof to a permanent support system rather than a temporal pre-reinforcing method. Therefore, in this study, pipe-roof method is numerically simulated using finite element method to evaluate effects of pipe-roof on behavior of ground and structure. Analyses are performed considering two major conditions that are with and without the application of pipe-roof and the shape of tunnel cross section. The results are presented with respect to variation of settlement and vertical stress distribution. Based on this results, it is found that ground settlement above the shallow tunnel can be considerably reduced by application of pipe-roof system. Also, the shape of tunnel cross section can influence on the mechanical behavior of ground and structure.

Experimental Verification of Sag Sensitivities using Catenary Model for PPWS Configuration Control in a Suspension Bridge (모형 현수선을 이용한 현수교 PPWS 형상관리를 위한 새그민감도의 실험적 검증)

  • PPWS, a large number of which a main cable of a suspension bridge consists of, must be precisely erected at a target location under construction considering the differences among design conditions. The absolute sag is measured for several PPWSs, which are reference strands and the relative sag is surveyed from them to other PPWSs, which are divided into several groups. And the adjustment of PPWS length is performed to erect it at target configuration. When PPWS is being under erection in a real bridge site, the procedures are as follows; evaluate sag sensitivities according to sag variation factors, calculate an adjustment length of PPWS corresponding to them and adjust a sag of PPWS by controlling the calculated amount of PPWS length. In this study, the differential-related equations of sag sensitivity were proposed for support movement of PPWS. Before site demonstration study of a series of them, we established a catenary model system and accomplished verification tests of them. From test results, the validation of them was done.

A Study on the Effect of Cohesive Laws on Finite Element Analysis of Crack Propagation Using Cohesive Elements (응집 요소를 사용한 균열 진전 유한요소 해석에서 응집 법칙의 영향에 대한 연구)

  • In this paper, the effect of cohesive laws on the finite element analysis of crack propagation using cohesive elements is investigated through three-point bending and double cantilever beam problems. The cohesive elements are implemented into ABAQUS/Standard user subroutines(UEL), and the shape of cohesive law is varied by changing parameters in polynomial functions of cohesive traction-separation relations. In particular, crack propagation behaviors are studied by comparing load-displacement curves of the analysis models which have different shapes of cohesive laws with the same values of fracture energy and cohesive strength. Furthermore, the influence of the element size on crack propagation is discussed in this study.

Fatigue Fracture Analysis of Curved Pipes Under Cyclic Loading (반복 하중에 의한 곡관의 피로 균열 해석)

  • In this study, we numerically analyze fatigue cracks of curved pipes under cyclic loadings. Numerical models of the curved pipes are developed. The models are verified with the experimental results in terms of fatigue lives and development process of the fatigue cracks. Erosion technique is applied to the solid elements in order to describe shapes of the fatigue cracks and estimate the fatigue lives. Also, development of the fatigue cracks is described by allocating sufficient number of solid elements in the radial direction. Fatigue lives and shapes of the crack resulting from numerical analyses show good agreement with those of the experiment considering ${\pm}100mm$ displacement. In addition, estimation of the fatigue life caused by displacement with different magnitude is conducted. We expect that the model can be applied to understand the relation between fatigue lives and characteristics of pipes or loadings.

  • In this paper, we propose an automatic displacement system for testing stability of structure. Photogrammetry is a method which can measure accurate 3D data from 2D images taken from different locations and which is suitable for analyzing and measuring the displacement of structure. This paper consists of camera calibration, feature extraction using coded target & retro-reflective circle, 3D reconstruction and analyzing accuracy. Multi-view camera which is used for measuring displacement of structure is placed with different location respectively. Camera calibration calculates trifocal tensor from corresponding points in images, from which Euclidean camera is calculated. Especially, in a step of feature extraction, we utilize sub-pixel method and pattern recognition in order to measure the accurate 3D locations. An Experimental Study on the Flexural Performance of Modular Slab Connections with Loop Joints (루프이음을 가진 모듈식 슬래브 연결부의 휨성능에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • Recently, new open-cut modular construction method, which is built within a 5~7m depth below the road, was proposed for the near-surface transit system to ensure the economic feasibility of underground structures. In this paper, the precast modular construction method was developed for the low-cost and rapid construction of underground structures. For the experiment on the flexural performance of the modular slab connections, a total of eleven specimens were fabricated according to the test variables; section shape, joint type, lap length, and transverse reinforcement. The test results were compared with those of the specimens without loop joints. To verify the performance of the slab connections, the 4-point loading tests of precast RC members with loop joints were conducted. As a result of the test, the flexural performance of the half-depth specimens with a 200mm lap length of loop joints were confirmed to be similar to those of the specimens without joints.

  • This study is to investigate the damage assessment of adjacent structures due to excavation in urban environment. Model tests were carried out for 2 story masonry building and frame structures in various shapes and locations. The damage level of adjacent structures were very differently estimated in accordance with the shape ratio (L/h) of structures, construction stages, and various locations. Therefore the most weak part (bay) of structure must be heavily instrumented and monitored in more details at early stage of constructions. The progressive crack development mechanism at various construction stages was revealed through model tests and crack size indicated more conservative side of damage level on the damage level graph.

Development of Shape Determination Program for Suspension Bridge Using Digital Image Processing (디지털 화상처리기법을 이용한 현수교의 형상결정기법 개발)

  • In this paper, it is presented a digital image processing method and the program (Visual C++) to determine the shape of the suspension bridge. To investigate the precision of this method, a suspension bridge is divided into 5, 13 and 19 images, respectively, by using the 6.3M pixels digital camera with 300mm zoom lens. Obtained results of the Kwang-Ahn Grand Bridge by using this method are fairly close to the real precision surveyed data. The accuracy is more improved by increasing the number of divided images of the structure. The total cost, man power and time of field survey by this method presented in this study could be much more reduced and the developed program could be applied with little modification for other structures like cable-stayed bridges, if lens compensation algorithms and program access capabilities are improved.

General Steady-State Shape Factors in Analyzing Slug Test Results to Evaluate In-situ Hydraulic Conductivity of Vertical Cutoff Wall (순간변위시험(slug test)시 연직차수벽의 현장투수계수를 산정하기 위한 형상계수 연구)

  • No analytical solution exists for evaluating in-situ hydraulic conductivity of vertical cutoff walls by analyzing slug test results. Recently, an analytical solution to interpret slug tests has been proposed for a partially penetrated well in an aquifer. However, this analytical solution cannot be directly applied to the cutoff wall because the solution has been developed exclusively for an infinite aquifer instead of a narrow cutoff wall. To consider the cutoff wall boundary conditions, the analytical solution has been modified in this study to take into account the narrow boundaries by introducing the imaginary well theory. Two boundary conditions are considered according to the existence of filter cakes: constant head boundary and no flux boundary. Generalized steady-state shape factors are presented for each geometric condition, which can be used for evaluating the in-situ hydraulic conductivity of cutoff walls. The constant head boundary condition provides higher shape factors and no flux boundary condition provides lower shape factors than the infinite aquifer, which enables to adjust the in-situ hydraulic conductivity of the cutoff wall. The hydraulic conductivities calculated from the analytical solution in this paper give about 1.2~1.7 times higher than those from the Bouwer and Rice method, one of the semi-empirical formulas. Considering the compressibility of the backfill material, the analytical solution developed in this study was proved to correspond to the case of incompressible backfill materials.

Wind Tunnel Test Study on the Characteristics of Wind-Induced Responses of Tall Buildings with Openings (중공부(中空部)를 가진 고층건축물(高層建築物)의 풍응답(風應答) 특성(特性)에 관한 풍동실험(風洞實驗) 연구(硏究))

  • The excessive wind-induced motion of tall buildings most frequently result from vortex-shedding-induced across-wind oscillations. This form of excitation is most pronounced for relatively flexible, lightweight, and lightly damped high-rise buildings with constant cross-sections. This paper discusses the aerodynamic means ofmitigating the across-wind vortex shedding induced in such situations. Openings are added in both the drag and lift directions in the buildings to provide pressure equalization. Theytend to reduce the effectiveness of across-wind forces by reducing their magnitudes and disrupting their spatial correlation. The effects of buildings with several geometries of openings on aerodynamic excitations and displacement responses have been studied for high-rise buildings with square cross-sections and an aspect ratio of 8:1 in a wind tunnel. High-frequency force balance testshave been carried out at the Kumoh National University of Technology using rigid models with 24 kinds of opening shapes. The measured model's aerodynamic excitations and displacement were compared withthose of a square cylinder with no openings to estimate the effectiveness of openings for wind-induced oscillations. From these results, theopening shape, size, and location of buildings to reduce wind-induced vortex shedding and responses were pointed out.
