  • This study was conducted to evaluate the control effect of sodium dichloroisocyanurate (NaDCC) for Venturia nashicola on Niitaka pear during flowering period. As a nontoxic disinfectant, sodium dichloroisocyanurate is widely used in the field of hygiene and disease prevention, medical treatment, aquiculture as well as plant protection. NaDCC was sprayed on the pear tree inoculated with conidia ($4.5{\times}10^5spores/mL$) of Venturia nashicola and as a result the incidence of pear scab was 23.8% in 750mg/L and 26.2% in 1,000mg/L compare to the 51.6% incidence in untreated tree. No damage in the pollen of pear flower was detected with NaDCC treatments in the full bloom period for six pear cultivar including Wonwhang. A NaDCC single treatment in the early bloom of Niitaka pear showed more than 98% of fertilization rate. Furthermore, there was no incidence of Venturia nashicola on Nitaka pear trees treated with NaDCC 4 times during their growth period.

  • A new paddy field herbicide, metazosulfuron granule is an herbicide for controlling annual and perennial weeds occurring in machinery transplanting paddy field. It is recommended to apply $30kg\;ha^{-1}$ 15 days after transplanting. As a result of preliminary tests, it could control seven annual species such as Echinochloa crus-galli, Bidens tripartita, Ludwigia prostrata, Monochoria vaginalis var. plantaginea, etc. and four perennial species including Cyperus serotinus, Sagittaria trifolia, Eleocharis kuroguwai, and Scirpus juncoides. Monochoria vaginalis var. plantaginea, S. trifolia and S. juncoides resistant to sulfonylurea- herbicides were also controlled. Because application timing of the herbicide is wide, it is very efficient to control the spraying timing by users. Phytotoxicity of rice cultivars was not observed, and the impact on the environment is very limited.

  • Pearl millet (Pennisetum americanum (L.) Leeke) has been found as a promising new forage crop of higher quality and yield in Korea since 1985. The objective of the study was to select preemergence herbicides for weed control in growing pearl millet in order to reduce production cost and with increased yields. Propazine (Milogard 4L) was the best in controlling weeds without its phytotoxicity at the standard application rate, and with the highest survival rate of seedlings of peal millet "Suwon 1" hybrid. Sprayings with Atrazine and Simazine caused lower survival rate of peal millet and with their light phytotoxicity as compared with manual weeding and Propazine spraying. Alachlor killed pearl millet seedlings almost completely. Pendimethalin also was not good for weed control of peal millet due to its severe phytotoxicity and with very low survival rate of pearl millet seedlings.

  • During 1976 the effects of insecticide placement in the root zone of the rice plants were evaluated for control of rice insect pests in the screenhouse and in the paddy field at Suweon. The methods of insecticide placement included the use of encapsuled formulation and injection of liquid formulation. In screen house experiments, the root' zone placement of carbofuran was highly effective up to 30 days after treatment against the striped rice borers (Chilo sujppressalis) and up to 17 days after treatment against the small brown planthopper(Laodelphax xtriatellus) and the brown planthopper (Nilaparvata lugens), while the root-zone placement of omethoate and disyston were ineffective. In field experiments, the injection in every other row by the liquid applicator designed at IRRI was less effective for control of the striped "'rice borers and the small brown planthoppers than the caupsule placement. The single root·zone placement of liquid carbofuran, however, seemed to be equal in 'effectiveness to two broadcast applications of carbofuran and diazinon. In the plots treated at 5 days after transplanting, incidence of the dead hearts by the striped rice borers was much lower than in the plots treated at the 18 days after transplanting.

• Present status on the pesticides production, supply, manufacture and pests control in Korea are summarized. The data in the past several years (1971-76) are analyzed to find out the problems and solutions for the further development of plant protection and pesticide industry in Korea. Since the acreages of crop plantation and the quantities of pesticides uses are already near to the stage of plateau, pesticide formulation with imported technical grade should be modified by local synthesis with imported quality. The government pesticides management act and regulations must be modernized urgently in connection with the synthesis. formulation, tests, registration, quality control. price and supply system as well as the safety use of pesticides. Recommendation concerning acceptable daily intakes(ADI) and residue limits must be established for the strengthning pesticide safety use and plant protection activities as soon as possible. The use of fungicide-insectide mixture in dust formulation must be authorized and practiced immediately for the labor saving and one-hit cooperative mass control of rice disease and insect pests, especially. At present, serious considerations on pesticide safety use and integrated pest control are strongly urged to help the farmers, to save the industries and to keep the nature as it is required.

  • Wet hill seeding (WHS) is one of the more famous labor and money saving methods technology used for rice cultivation. In WHS, rice standing percentage and weedy rice occurrence are the most important factors considered to secure a rice yield. We investigated the optimum seeding date of WHS in the Southern Plain area of South Korea. Weedy rice needed two weeks at $15^{\circ}C$ to show over 80% emergence. Germinated rice seed grown at $20^{\circ}C$ needed over for 10 days to achieve a shoot length over 3 cm. In field cultivation, the mean temperature for ten days after seeding showed a highly positive correlation with rice standing rate, spikelet number per square meter and yield index that favorably compared to machine transplanting. With these data, we suggest that the optimum seeding date of WHS that can secure over 98% of yield index of machine transplanting in Southern part of Korea is May. 21~Jun. 5 in Honam and May. 16~Jun. 5 in Yeongnam area.

  • In this study, size of the fruit of Japanese apricot (plum) was estimated through a plum recognition and size estimation program using 3D images in order to control the Eurytoma maslovskii that causes the most damage to plum in a timely manner. In 2018, night shooting was carried out using a Kinect 2.0 Camera. For night shooting in 2019, a RealSense Depth Camera D415 was used. Based on the acquired images, a plum recognition and estimation program consisting of four stages of image preprocessing, sizeable plum extraction, RGB and depth image matching and plum size estimation was implemented using MATLAB R2018a. The results obtained by running the program on 10 images produced an average plum recognition error rate of 61.9%, an average plum recognition error rate of 0.5% and an average size measurement error rate of 3.6%. The continued development of these plum recognition and size estimation programs is expected to enable accurate fruit size monitoring in the future and the development of timely control systems for Eurytoma maslovskii.

  • The current study, which consisted of two independent studies (laboratory and greenhouse), was carried out to project the hypothesis fungi-spray scheduling for leaf mold and gray leaf spot in tomato, as well as to evaluate the effect of temperature and leaf wet duration on the effectiveness of different fungicides against these diseases. In the first experiment, tomato leaves were infected with 1 × 104 conidia·mL-1 and put in a dew chamber for 0 to 18 hours at 10 to 25℃ (Fulvia fulva) and 10 to 30℃ (Stemphylium lycopersici). In farm study, tomato plants were treated for 240 hours with diluted (1,000 times) 30% trimidazole, 50% polyoxin B, and 40% iminoctadine tris (Belkut) for protection of leaf mold, and 10% etridiazole + 55% thiophanate-methyl (Gajiran), and 15% tribasic copper sulfate (Sebinna) for protection of gray leaf spot. In laboratory test, leaf condensation on the leaves of tomato plants were emerged after 9 hrs. of incubation. In conclusion, the incidence degree of leaf mold and gray leaf spot disease on tomato plants shows that it is very closely related to formation of leaf condensation, therefore the incidence of leaf mold was greater at 20 and 15℃, while 25 and 20℃ enhanced the incidence of gray leaf spot. The incidence of leaf mold and gray leaf spot developed 20 days after inoculation, and the latency period was estimated to be 14-15 days. Trihumin fungicide had the maximum effectiveness up to 168 hours of fungicides at 12 hours of wet duration in leaf mold, whereas Gajiran fungicide had the highest control (93%) against gray leaf spot up to 144 hours. All the chemicals showed an around 30-50% decrease in effectiveness after 240 hours of treatment. The model predictions in present study could be help in timely, effective and ecofriendly management of leaf mold disease in tomato.
