  • Two biology modules were developed previously for the purpose of improving creativity and scientific thinking of secondary school students. A hypothetical-deductive experimental procedure was reflected in the module when students themselves can perform a series of activities of making hypothesis and designing an experiment to solve the questions. They followed a series of scientific processes to determine some characteristics regarding plant pigments and the transport process of materials in living organisms. Four classes of 9th graders in'S' Science High School were divided into the experimental and the control group. The same contents of the modules were taught to the control group by the traditional experimental way. The students' creativity, scientific thinking, scientific inquiry skill and knowledge achievement were examined before and after the interventions. As results, the experimental groups showed more significant improvement on the areas of the students' creativity, scientific thinking, scientific inquiry skill and achievement than the control groups. Results indicated that the specially designed modules in terms of hypothetical-deductive experimental procedure were effective to improve science high school students' creativity and scientific thinking abilities.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of STS modules reflecting Ansan's geological characteristics in Chemistry I on high school students' science related attitudes and preference for STS lessons. The subjects were 10th grade students from K High School in Ansan and comprised 71 students in the experiment group and 78 students in the control group from 2 classes each. Pretest-posttest control group design was employed for the purpose of research. Four STS modules with lesson plans and teaching materials with themes of water, air, and energy, all of which are closely related to high school Chemistry I were developed and applied to the experiment group. The science related attitudes and preference for STS lessons were then examined in pre- and post-tests. The science related attitudes of the experiment group were significantly high in three out of five domains compared to the control group who was taught traditionally. The preference for STS lessons of the experiment group were highly positive in all five areas and were particularly high in the area of 'relation to society'. Such results imply that in order to make effective high school Chemistry I curriculum units related to STS, emphasized by both the 7th National Curriculum and the Revised 7th National Curriculum, it is necessary to use episodes reflecting local characteristics in which students show greater interest and active participation.

  • This study investigates how the lunar phases drawing module-applied instruction affects high school students' conceptual changes of the lunar phases. 46 juniors in a high school were given the module instruction on drawing the lunar phases, and then interviews were conducted to verify conceptual changes in subjects' recognition structures. The types of students' misconceptions of the lunar phases change before the instruction were as follows. Type S is that the Earth's shadow covers the moon. Type SR is that one has both misconception of Type S and a scientific concept at the same time according to the positional relationships. The scientific concept means that an observer sees a moon's part which reflects sunlight. Type SB is that the Earth's shadow covers the moon or the moon can be seen or not by the background's brightness according to the positional relationships. The last Type SRB includes all three above-mentioned types, and it explains the lunar phases at each position. As a result of the module-based instruction, 26 out of 36 subjects built up the scientific concept and 10 students did not. 7 out of the 11 Type S and 3 out of the 17 Type SR students did not, either. Especially, type S students did not change their preconception that the phases of moon change were done by the earth's shadow. Here, their preconception is too much strong; as they solve problems, their preconception is more beneficial, comparing to the method which it is presented from the module. This fact supports that it is difficult for students to discard preconception.
