  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships between peer victimization by peers, bullying, and friendships, with a focus on friendship network, friendship quality, and friends' characteristics. The subjects were 678 fifth and sixth grade primary school children recruited from a public school in Bucheon city. The peer nomination index was used to assess peer victimization, bullying, and friendship network. In addition, children themselves reported on the quality of their friendships using the Friendship Quality Scale. The results showed that victimization by peers was influenced by friendship network size, support, and victimization of friends, whereas bullying was explained by support and the bullying behaviors of friends.

  • We focused on the peer relationship of adolescent patients with schizophrenia, which usually occurs around puberty. Reviewing cases with schizophrenia and the literature extensively, we had come to the conclusion as follows;1) the most robust predictors among factors influencing the prognosis of schizophrenia are premorbid interpersonal relationship and adaptive functions. 2) Especially teachers’ reports about school life and peer relationship during school life are useful for predicting the occurrence of schizophrenia in adolescents. We described characteristic and behavioral childhood features which are important in pathogenesis of schizophrenia, based on high-risk studies and long term follow-up studies. Also, pathological profiles of the interpersonal relationship and pathology in adulthood were presented. We tried to integrate various aspects of interpersonal and social weaknesses of schizophrenics applying 'primary and secondary socialization' concept. Finally, five cases of adolescent schizophrenics were described briefly and proposal for the early detection and intervention for risk factors was introduced.

  • This study examined how social withdrawal as an individual factor and discrimination as a contextual factor contributed to depression caused by peer victimization among middle school students. Self-reported data of 1,611 students from 86 classrooms in 7 middle schools was analyzed, using multilevel path analysis. The results indicate that peer victimization had a significant partial mediating effect on the relation between social withdrawal and depression at the individual level. Social withdrawal had a direct positive effect on depression as well as an indirect positive effect on depression via high levels of peer victimization. Discrimination also positively predicted peer victimization at the classroom level. Moreover, classroom-level discrimination moderated the individual-level relations between social withdrawal and peer victimization. The relation between social withdrawal and peer victimization was much stronger as the levels of discrimination in the classroom were higher. These findings shed light on the importance of considering both individual and contextual factors when intervening to prevent peer victimization.

  • This study investigated the relations among children's strategies in peer conflict situations, social behavior and children's peer acceptance. Eighty-seven kindergarteners were asked about their strategies in response to 8 hypothetical peer conflict situations. Classroom teachers completed the social behavior rating scale to evaluate children's behavioral characteristics. Children's peer acceptance was measured by peer acceptance rating scale. Results indicated that children's strategies for responding to peer conflicts and their social behavior correlated with peer acceptance, although the linkages were different for boys and girls. Furthermore, children's strategies correlated with their social behavior.

  • The purpose of the present study was to explore the stability and changes of participant roles in the bullying process, namely, bullies, victims, followers, outsiders, and defenders. In addition, this study examined associated environmental characteristics of both followers and defenders in sixth graders among peer bystanders in the fifth grade. The participants consisted of 461 children from grades 5 to 6(male: 239, female: 222). Data were collected at one year intervals for two data points. The results indicated a moderate consistency in the participant roles the children take across time. Followers and outsiders tended to change differently in their roles one year later. On the other hand, defenders, bullies, and victims tended to keep the same role. The defenders group generally had higher levels of peer attachment, teacher attachment and community's supervision than the followers group. The implications for future research and intervention in bullying were also discussed.

  • This study has investigated how five peer status groups that were selected by a social skills scale exhibit different peer relationship problems by means of averages, standard deviations, and profile analysis. Social skills scale developed by Yi-Hwan Ahn(2007) and the inventory of peer relationships by Hae-Won Jung(2007) were administered to 551 fifth and sixth graders in 9 elementary schools located in Gyungnam province, and averages and standard deviations of 5 peer status groups' peer relationship problems were explored. Also in order to see if differences exist among 8 sub-scales in the inventory of peer relationships according to the peer status, an average profile of scores was represented by a graph and multivariate analysis was carried out. The main results of the study are as follows. First, statistical analysis of 551 cases included in the study showed the children were distributed into the Average group(319, 57.9%), the Popular group(111, 29.1%), the Rejected group(70, 12.9%), the Controversial group(41, 7.4%), and the Neglected group(10, 1.8%), in that order. Second, as a result of comparing average scores for each measure in the inventory of peer relationships according to the peer status group, a significant difference was found to exist according to a child's peer status. The Popular group showed the lowest scores in Too Controlling, Hard to be Supportive, the Cold, and Non-Assertive among the 5 peer status groups whereas the Rejected group showed the highest scores in Social Avoidant, Non-Assertive, and Too Responsible. Third, marked differences according to the peer status group were found. The Popular group showed the lowest profile among the peer status groups whereas the Rejected group had the highest profile. In the sub-scales of the peer relationship problems, the Rejected children showed a significantly higher level of Socially Avoidant and Non-Assertiveness in comparison to the Popular children, which implies the Popular children group has lower levels of peer relationship problems than the other groups.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between children's self-esteem, peer attachment, parenting attitudes, and children's grit, and to specifically identify the influence of children's self-esteem, peer attachment, and parenting attitudes on children's grit. The characteristics of the survey subjects were identified through frequency analysis and descriptive statistics analysis of the 11th year of the Korea Children's Panel (2018) data, and Pearson's moment correlation coefficient was calculated for correlation analysis between major variables. Multiple regression analysis was conducted to examine the influence of children's self-esteem, peer attachment, and parenting attitudes on children's grit. The research results are as follows. First, children's self-esteem, peer attachment, and parenting attitudes were found to be positively correlated. Second, the child's self-esteem was found to have a positive influence on the child's grit, and among the peer attachment sub-variables, peer trust was found to have an influence, and among the sub-factors of parenting attitude, 'mother' affection/involvement, 'father' Democratic relationships were found to have an effect. In other words, it can be seen that children's self-esteem at the personal level, peer trust at the school level, and maternal affection and paternal relationship at the family level are useful variables that strengthen children's grit. Accordingly, in order to improve children's grit level, we must consider promotion measures through intervention and support at a multifaceted level.
