  • It is necessary to develop the simple and efficient technique that ease entry of man and equipment and take the role of foundations of temporary or small structures on the soft ground. This study intends to verify the effects on the increase of bearing capacity of base projecting walls under shallow foundations and to investigate the variance of the bearing capacity of the foundations according to the interval and length of the walls. For this, model soft ground in the chamber equipped with loading apparatus is made and the loading tests on the model foundations with base projecting walls of various intervals and lengths using the apparatus are performed with measuring the loads and settlements. The results show that the base projecting walls under shallow foundations on soft ground are effective on the increase of bearing capacity and the more the number and length of the walls the larger the effects. And, when the ratio of interval to length of the walls is 1, i.e. the shape forming the base of the foundation and the walls is square, the bearing capacity is increased by 25% and the effect is optimum.

  • This paper described the ultimate strength and deformation limit of the new uniplanar T-joints in cold-formed square hollow sections. In the configuration of the new T-joint, only a branch member is orientated to a chord member at 45 degrees in the plane of the truss. This study focused on the branch-rotated T-joints that were governed by chord flange failure in previous studies. Test results of the T-joint in cold-formed square hollow sections revealed a deformation limit of 3%B for $16.7{\leq}2{\gamma}(=B/T){\leq}33.3$ and $0.27{\leq}{\beta}(=b1/B){\leq}0.6$. The existing strength formulae for traditional T-joint were determined and a new yield-line model for the branch-rotated T-joint proposed. Finally, the strength formula on the yield-line analysis was compared with test results and the application range of the proposed formula recommended.

  • In this study, deep beam specimens are designed to have the effective shear span to depth ratio 1.0 and web opening within effective shear region. The purpose of this study is to investigate experimentally the shear strengthening effect between before failure and after failure upon using fiber sheets for RC deep beam with opening in web. The results can be summarized as follows; 1)When deep beams with web opening were failed in shear, their initial diagonal crack load and crack width were not influenced by their types of the arranged steel bars. 2)Deep beam with the horizontal reinforced bar was effective in the ultimate load of deep beam with web opening in shear failure 3)There were the approximate values between the experimental values and the analysis of finite element method. 4)The ultimate failure strengths of the repaired and strengthened specimens were increased about 34.4%~83.8% in comparison with specimens not to be strengthened.

  • The static strengths of the existing RC beams were experimentally investigated in this paper to understand the strength characteristics of existing structural members and to get appropriate data in strengthening RC members in the remodelling construction. Ten RC beams were prepared by cutting and extracting directly from the demolition site of apartment housings and tested in order to evaluate the flexural and shear strengths of existing RC beams by their geometric condition. From the test results, it was found that most of the specimens had a sufficient structural capacity except for some special case, for example, specimens with severe cracks or concrete losses caused by improper casting. Therefore, the severely deteriorated members originated from bad concrete casting or careless construction process should be repaired and strengthened in remodelling construction.

  • The behavior of concrete structures subject to fire is complex, depending on many factors. The factors usually considered in research include the level and endurance of temperatures in concrete and reinforcing bars, the mechanical properties of the steel and concrete, moisture contents, cover thickness, existence of eccentricity, and member geometry among others. Although there are a few sophisticated numerical models which can trace the effects of these important parameters on the residual capacity of reinforced concrete columns damaged by fire, practical predictive formulas are in need for rapid yet reasonable assessment in practice. The practical formulas are developed in this study for fire-damaged normal strength reinforced concrete square columns, which can approximate the predictions of those sophisticated numerical models with ease in use. The formulas take into account the effects of exposure time to fire, concrete strength, reinforcement ratio and sectional area. The developed formulas are seen to correlate with the predictions of numerical model in a reasonable agreement. Some examples are also presented in determining the residual strength, safety and additionally needed strengths for a fire-damaged reinforced concrete column.

  • For column-beam gussets of wooden structures, slit-processed members inserted with a steel plate are used in general. In this study, a rigid portal frame bonded with a joint was fabricated and a semi-rigid portal frame was fabricated by making a wooden gusset, a replacement for steel plate, of which a half was integrated into the column member and the other half was joined with the beam member by drift-pins. The lateral strength performance of the wooden portal frame was compared with that of the steel plate-inserted joint portal frame. The lateral strength performance was evaluated through a perfect elasto-plasticity model analysis, sectional stiffness change rate, and short-term permissible shear strength. As a result of the experiment, the maximum strength of the rigid portal frame was lower than that of the steel plate-inserted joint portal frame. The yield strength and ultimate strength were calculated as 0.58 and 0.48, respectively, but the measurements of initial stiffness and cumulative ductility improved by 1.35 and 1.1, respectively. As a result of the perfect elasto-plasticity model analysis of the semi-rigid portal frame, the maximum strength was lower than that of the rigid portal frame, but the toughness after failure was excellent. Thus, the ultimate strength was higher by 1.05~1.07. The steel plate-inserted portal frame showed rapid decrease in stiffness with the progress of repeated tests, but the stiffness of the portal frames with a wooden joint decreased slowly.

  • The objective of this research is to provide better knowledge on the behavior of strong axis SRC column-RC beam joint, supported by experimental results, that can be broadly applicable to many structures. For this purpose, firstly literature reviews and field survey were made to classify the most commonly used for these types of joints. Then, experimental program was designed and performed including 6 SRC column-RC beam joint specimens designed with various joint details. Using the experimental results obtained from the quasi-static cyclic tests, structural performances of the joints such as hysteretic curves, maximum strength capacities, strength degradation beyond the maximum strength, ductilities, and energy dissipation capacities were investigated. Test results showed that specimens with wide beam shape (RCW-P, RCW-W, RCW-F) and T beam shape (RCT-W) showed better structural performances than the bracket type specimens (HBR-L, HBR-S). These specimens also revealed to have higher strength capacities than the nominal design strength. However, H beam bracket type specimens (HBR-L, HBR-S) need further study both analytically and experimentally to verify the reason for unexpected structural performances.

  • The main purpose of this study is to provide a basic information for the seismic capacity evaluation and the seismic design of low-rise reinforced concrete (RC) shear wall buildings, which are comprised of a pilotis in the first story. In this study, relationships between strengths and ductilities of each story of RC buildings with pilotis are investigated based on the nonlinear seismic response analysis. The characteristics of low-rise RC buildings with pilotis are assumed as the double degree of freedom structural systems. In order to simulate these systems, the pilotis is idealized as a degrading trilinear hysteretic model that fails in flexure and the upper story of shear wall system is idealized as a origin-oriented hysteretic model that fails in shear, respectively. Stiffness properties of both models are varied in terms of story shear coefficients and structures are subjected to various ground motion components. By analyzing these systems, interaction curves of required strengths for various levels of ductility factors are finally derived for practical purposes. The result indicates that the required strength levels derived can be used as a basic information for seismic evaluation and design criteria of low-rise reinforced concrete shear wall buildings having pilotis structure.
