  • The purpose of this study was to investigate 1) how the middle school Home Economics teachers perceive the importance of the practical problem-focused instruction, 2) how often they perform the instruction, and 3) what they require for the implementation the instruction. Data were collected from 150 Home Economics teachers via e-mail survey and from 6 Home Economics teachers' face-to-face interviews. Descriptive statistics including frequency, percentage, average, and standard deviation, and the results of such analyses as ANOVA, T-test, and correlation were reported using SPSS/win 10.1. The results of this research were as follows: First, even though the majority of the respondents recognized the high need for practical problem-focused instruction, only a small portion of the respondents reported that they performed that instruction in the classroom. There was no correlation between the perception of the need for practical problem-focused instruction and the degree of performance of practical problem-focused instruction. Secondly, the of performance of practical problem-focused instruction was significantly different depending on the years of teaching experience and the subject that the teachers majored in. Job satisfaction had positive correlations with the perception of the need for practical problem-focused instruction and the degree of performance of practical problem-focused instruction. Thirdly, the more teachers shared information and materials with colleagues, the better they tended to be at practical problem-focused instruction. On the other hand, insufficient time for their instruction and a deficiency in understanding the rationale of the instruction were pointed out as barriers to classroom practice. The respondents answered that long-term training programs on the philosophical foundation of practical problem-focused instruction, materials related to the instruction as well as additional credits for Home Economics are most critical to reduce the discrepancy between the teacher perception and the classroom practice of practical problem-focused instruction.

  • The ability-grouping is the essence of the seventh educational curriculum, applied to school from year 2000, and its enriched-supplementary type will be carried out for science course. This study examines the effect of the enriched-supplementary ability-grouping within class to student's academic achievement and the attitude, related to science. Thus we developed teaching and learning methods with intellectual level about the subject of 'Water Circulation and Weather Change' in Middle-School Science 2. Then we tested 152 eighth graders who were divided into the experimental and control groups. The experimental one was taught through the ability-grouping for about six weeks, while the control through conventional lecture. The improvement of the experimental group in academic achievement was more effective than that of the control, and particularly to below-average students who ranked in lower thirty percent. The experimental one got more negative change in domain 'Science as a Subject, and in subdomain 'Anxiety in Science Lesson'. While outstanding students who ranked in upper thirty percent showed a significant positive change in subdomain 'Satisfaction in Teaching Method, the below-average were negatively changed in subdomain 'Anxiety in Science Lesson'. The current ability-grouping was suitable for the improvement of academic achievement, but not for the general attitude related to science. In order to enhance the ability-grouping effect in science education, we need to additionally consider student's interest and concern in grouping, and develop various teaching and learning methods together with proper textbook contents.

  • The purpose of this study were to develop PBL(problem-based learning) program, and to examine the effects of PBL. This paper applied PBL to a "Culture of Clothing" class, comprised of 23 undergraduate students majoring in Home Economics. As part of the PBL curriculum, the class assigned students to design and create brochures about the culture of clothing by going on field trips to the National Folk Museum of Korea. The class met for five weeks, 3 hours per week. The effectiveness of PBL was measured based on the students' self-reflective journals, self-assessments, and satisfaction surveys. The study gathered three major feedbacks from the students after taking the PBL class. First, the students recognized the importance of cooperation and communication in problem-solving process. Second, the students appreciated that students themselves were implementing the self-directed learning. Third, the students were satisfied with the overall quality of the PBL class, based on their feedbacks and surveys. However, the students' self-assessments show their acknowledgement of the lack of creativity and critical-thinking skills. The study also observed relatively low-satisfaction ratings about the learning environment at the National Folk Museum of Korea.

  • The main purpose of this study was to examine the satisfaction of online classes of undergraduates who have experienced sudden online classes in college because of COVID-19, and to analyze the differences of the satisfaction of online classes depending on colleges. The participants were 1,380 college students. Descriptive statistics, one-way ANOVA, and Post-hoc Scheffé were performed. Undergraduates were highly satisfied with online classes in cultural subjects and major subjects, whereas they showed low satisfaction with appropriateness of the assignment. There were statistically significant differences in online class satisfaction between colleges. Students at the College of Education were highly satisfied with online classes satisfaction, while engineering students were less satisfied with online classes satisfaction. There were statistically significant differences in students engagements between colleges. Regardless of colleges, students displayed low satisfaction in e-class server and teaching and learning infrastructure. These findings suggest that we need to provide autonomous support and make an effective online learning environment such as server expansion and e-class improvement to enhance undergraduates' self-directed learning. We also should come up with effective online classes guidelines.
