  • The chemical structures of perfluorinated compounds(PFCs) have unique properties such as thermal and chemical stability that make them useful components in a wide variety of consumer and industrial products. Two of these PFCs, perfluorooctane sulfonate(PFOS) and perfluorooctanoic acid(PFOA), have received attention and were the most commonly detected. In this study it was analyzed the concentrations of 8 PFCs in samples were collected from drinking water treatment plants for 5 years(2012-2016). PFOS and PFOA were also high concentration and frequency. The mean concentrations of PFOA and PFOS were detected $0.0026-0.0069{\mu}g/L$ and $0.0009-0.0024{\mu}g/L$ in samples from drinking water treatment plants. These were relatively lower or similar compared to PFOS concentrations in Osaka(Japan). In general, these levels are below health-based values set by international authoritative bodies for drinking water. These results will be serve as the first monitoring data for PFCs in drinking water and be useful for characterizing the concentration distribution and management of PFCs in future studies.

  • This study accessed the adsorption characteristics of the 11 perfluorinated compounds (PFCs) on coal-based granular activated carbon (GAC). The breakthrough appeared first for PFODA and sequentially for PFHDA, PFTeDA, PFTDA, PFDoDA, PFUnDA, PFDA, PFNA, PFOA, PFOS, and PFHpA. The maximum adsorption capacity (X/M) for the 11 PFCs with apparent breakthrough points ranged from 2.43 ${\mu}g/g$ (for PFODA) to 64.5 ${\mu}g/g$ (for PFHpA). Carbon usage rate (CUR) for PFODA was 0.291 g/day, 11.2 times higher than that for PFHpA (0.026 g/day). The X/M values for the 11 PFCs were fitted well with a linear regression ($r^2$ = 0.89) by their molecular weight (chain length).

  • In this study, the decomposition characteristics of perfluorinated compounds generated in semiconductor manufacturing process were investigated by using a high temperature plasma. The analysis results revealed that $CF_4$ and $SF_6$ showed the highest efficiency at 12.8 kW power, but no significant difference was observed at the power above. Experimental results showed that the maximum efficiency was obtained at the flow rate of about 14 mL/min and the treatment efficiency decreased as the flow rate increased or decreased with respect to the flow rate of 14 mL/min. As a result, the decomposition characteristics of perflurocompounds (PFCs) using a high temperature plasma could be grasped, and also the basis for the treatment of PFCs and greenhouse gases generated in the semiconductor manufacturing process could be obtained.

  • In this study, the removal efficiency of PFCs(perfluorinated compounds) in the GAC(granule activated carbon) process based on the superheated steam automatic regeneration system was investigated in laboratory scale and pilot-scale reactor. Among PFCs, PFHxS(perfluorohexyl sulfonate) was most effectively removed. The removal efficiency of PFCs was found to be closely related to the EBCT, and the removal efficiencies of PFOA(perfluorooctanoic acid), PFOS(perfluorooctyl sulfonate), and PFHxS were 43.7, 75, and 100%, respectively, under the condition of EBCT of 6 min. Afterward, PFOA, PFOS, and PFHxS exhibited the earlier breakthrough time in the order. After that, GAC was regenerated, and the removal efficiency of the PFCs before and after regeneration was compared. As a result, it was shown that the PFCs removal efficiency in the regenerated GAC process were higher, and that of PFOA was improved to 75%. The findings of this study indicate the feasibility of the superheated steam automatic regeneration system for the stable removal of the PFCs, and it was verified that this technology can be applied stably enough even in field conditions.

  • We applied a sensitive method based on on-line solid-phase extraction (SPE) and liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry (LC/MSD) using an electrospray interface for the determination of eleven perfluorinated compounds (PFCs) in water. The on-line connection suppressed the target loss by keeping the cartridge from drying, which resulted in improvement of the recovery and saving of the analytical time. For the on-line solid-phase extraction of 10 mL water samples, recoveries were between $80.4{\pm}5.2%{\sim}109.5{\pm}1.4%$ and limit of quantification (LOQ) were 3.6~15.9 ng/L for the PFCs. The total PFCs concentrations of the tributaries and main stream of Nakdong River water samples were in the range of $8.0{\sim}678.6{\mu}g/L$.

  • We have developed analysis method of PFCs in river water and sediment, and determined seven species of PFCs such as PFBS, PFHxS, PFOS, PFHpA, PFOA, PFNA and PFDA. Water and sediment samples were collected from 21 and 13 different sites along the Nakdong, Seomjin and Nam River, respectively. The water samples were pretreated with HLB cartridge and sediment samples were concentrated after extracted by sonication, and the levels of PFCs were determined by LC-MS/MS. The coefficient of determination ($R^2$) values of calibration curves were higher than 0.99. The method detection limits ranged 0.09~0.63 ng/L in water and 0.013~0.020 ng/g in sediment. The recovery rates of PFCs was found to be 74~98% for water and 87~111% for sediment. PFOA was the major species in water samples and followed by PFHpA and PFOS. In sediment, PFOA, PFOS and PFDA showed similar levels. Both water and sediment samples collected from the Nakdong River showed the highest concentrations of PFCs among the three rivers.

  • In this study, the toxic effects of PFOA and PFOS potassium salt on Mesocentrotus nudus using 10 min-fertilization rate and 48 h-normal embryogenesis were confirmed through the calculation of toxicity values such as Non-observed effective concentration, Low-observed effective concentration, and 50% of effective concentration. The case of 10 min-fertilization rate and 48 h-normal embryogenesis showed the concentration-dependent reduction pattern when exposed to PFOA and PFOS potassium salt, in tested concentration, respectively. The EC50 values of 10 min-fertilization rates for PFOA and PFOS potassium salt were 1346.43 mg/l and 536.18 mg/l, respectively, and the EC50 values of 48 h-normal embryogenesis were 42.67 mg/l and 17.81 mg/l, respectively. Both toxicity test methods showed high toxicity sensitivity to PFOS potassium salt. Recent studies have shown that the concentration of PFOA and PFOS in the marine environment has continuously decreased, and it is not enough to show acute toxicity to sea urchin. However, PFOA and PFOS have a very long half-life and can accumulate throughout the life of marine life, so it is still observed at a high concentration in shellfish. Therefore, a study on chronic toxicity through the whole-life cycle of marine organisms in coastal environments should be needed.

  • Al containing mesoporous molecular sieve (Al-MMS) was synthesized by hydrolysis of $H_2SiF_6$ and $Al(NO_3)_3{\cdot}9H_2O$. The material obtained was characterized by XRD, $N_2$-physisorption. The specific surface area was $981m^2/g$, and the average pore size was uniformity $39{\AA}$. It was confirmed that the acidity of Al-MMS was milder than that of zeolite Y based on the results of $NH_3$-TPD. Active materials, Pt and Pd, were loaded on Al-MMS in order to examine the feasibility of using Al-MMS as a catalyst support in the hydrogenation of aromatic compounds included in the residue oil of a naphtha cracker. The hydrogenation activity of PtPd/Al-MMS has been studied by following the kinetics of the hydrogenation of naphthalene, and by comparing the kinetic parameters obtained with Pt and Pd catalysts supported on the other mesoporous material support and commercial conventional support materials. PtPd/Al-MMS catalyst shows the highest activity of hydrogenation and sulfur resistance. The high activity of PtPd/Al-MMS was confirmed again in the hydrogenation of PGO (pyrolized gas oil), which is residue oil obtained from a naphtha cracker. Therefore, PtPd/Al-MMS can be applied to the hydrogenation of aromatic compounds included in the residue oil of a commercial naphtha cracker commericially.

  • Perfluorocompounds (PFCs) gases were decomposed by gliding arc plasma generated by AC pulse power. $N_2$ gas of 10 LPM flow rate and $H_2$ gas of 0.5 LPM were introduced into the gliding arc plasma generated between a pair of electrodes with SUS 303 material, and the PFCs gases were injected in the plasma and thereby were decomposed. The PFCs gas-decomposition-characteristics through the gliding arc plasma were analyzed by FT-IR, where pure $N_2$ and $H_2$-added $N_2$ environment were used to generate the gliding arc plasma. The PFCs gas-decomposition-properties were changed by electric power for gliding arc plasma generation and the H2 gas addition was effective to enhance the PFCs decomposition rate.

  • The current official perfluorochemicals (PFCs) analysis method is established with hydrophilic-lipophilic balance (HLB) solid phase extraction (SPE) clean-up method with LC-tandem mass spectrometry ($MS^n$). Herein the HLB clean-up method from the official method by Korean government was modified with Envi-Carb$^{TM}$ to improve the clean-up efficiency for agricultural water and the unexpected UV disturbance in the water was effectively removed by the adsorbent treatment without a significant disturbance of quantitation. And quadrupole time of flight mass spectrometry (qTOFMS) was suggested to the available $MS^n$ instruments for the residue analysis of PFCs based on the ng/L of quantitation limits in water as well.
