  • The ring formation and electronic properties of furan adsorbed on graphene layers grown on 6H-SiC (0001) has been investigated using atomic force microscopy (AFM), near edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) spectra for the C K-edge, and core level photoemission spectroscopy (CLPES). Moreover, we observed that furan molecules adsorbed on graphene could be used for chemical functionalization via the lone pair electrons of the oxygen group, allowing chemical doping. We also found that furan spontaneously form rings with one of three different bonding configurations and the electronic properties of the ring formed by furan on graphene can be described using by AFM, NEXAFS and CLPES, respectively.

  • The histological structure of the heart in Pseudorasbora parva was investigated by light microscope. The heart consisted of four consecutive chambers, the sinus venosus, atrium, ventricle and bulbus arteriosus. The wall of the sinus venosus was divided into endocardium, myocardium and epicardium, and the walls of the atrium and ventricle were divided into endocardium, subendocardium, myocardium, subepicardium and epicardium, and the wall of the bulbus arteriosus was divided into endocardium, subendocardium (ridge tissue), middle layer, subepicardium and epicardium. The valves were observed in the sinoatrial, artrioventricular and bulboventricular junctions. The sinus venosus wall was mostly made up of collagen. The rings of tissue were observed at the sinoatrial junction. The atrium was composed of a spongy trabeculate myocardium surrounded by an external rim of thin myocardium, and collagens were distributed in the subepicardium and trabeculae. The ventricle was a spongy myocardium with vessels in subepicardium. In the subepicardium and trabeculae of the ventricle, collagens were distributed. In the bulbus arteriosus, the diameter and length of the ridges were differed. The endocardial cells were convex and the non-clustered subendocardial cells showed irregular shapes. The cells of the middle layer were arranged into incomplete layers that showed different orientations. The subepicardium was formed by cells of different morphology. Collagens and elastins were demonstrated in the subendocardium, middle layer and subepicardium of the bulbus arteriosus. The epicardium was a single layer composed of flattened cells.

  • Rust disease on Korean Azalea (Rododendron yedoense) was occurred in Jeonju, Jeonbuk province of Korea. The typical symtoms of the disease appeared first as small yellowish spots on leaves. Uredinia were observed at hypophyllous of the leaves, yellow or dark yellow in color and globoid in shape with the size of $0.27{\sim}0.46{\times}0.31{\sim}0.61$ mm. Urediniospores were also observed in the leaves, yellow in color with globoid or ovoid in shape with the size of $17.1{\sim}29.2{\times}12.8{\sim}18.2{\mu}m$. Surface characterization of the spores revealed that these spores have papilla-like projections, which were made of $2{\sim}3$ annulation (SA; small annulate). Based on these morphological characterizations the causative fungus was identified as Chrysomyxa rhododendri.

  • Twenty-two strains of nematophagous fungi were isolated from 100 soil samples. Nematophagous fungi were classified into three categories; 3-dimensional adhesive nets (A group), 2-dimensional adhesive nets (B group) and constricting ring (C group). Nine strains were selected and identified on the basis of morphological characteristics (hypha, conidiophore, form and size of conidia, number of conidia, node of conidophore, number and location of septa, size and color of chlamydospore) and ITS (internal transcribed spacer) region of rDNA sequences. As the results, the isolated were identified as belonging to the species of Monacrosporium thaumasium (Kan-2, Kan-4, Kan-11), Arthrobotrys oligospora (Kan-9, Kan-13, Kan-20, Kan-21), A. musiformis (Kan-12), and A. dactyloides (Kan-22).

  • In this study, a simplified axisymmetric model is proposed for the problem of compressible internal flow past a microgap. Using numerical and experimental methods, the phenomena of choked flows are observed; these flows are induced by the acceleration of subsonic flows past the narrow cross-section of an annular shape made by a microgap. The relation between mass flow rate and differential pressure is obtained, and by comparing the result with experimental results, the reliability of the numerical results is discussed. The generation of a supersonic jet flow and its diffraction are visualized by performing the numerical analysis of axisymmetric compressible Navier-Stokes equations. This investigation greatly extends the physical understanding of the axisymmetric compressible flow, which has a wide range of engineering applications, e.g., in the case of valves in automotive power systems.

  • Yellow patch as leaf blight caused by binucleate Rhizoctonia occured in bentgrass (Agrostis Palustris Huds), zoysiagrass (Zoysia japonica Steud) and Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.) from several golf couses in Korea. Binucleate Rhizoctonia was isolated from the infected lesions and was identified Rhizoctonia cerealis. Rhizoctonia cerealis infected crown, stem and leaf tissue, and the symptom was light yellow circular patch upto 1 m in diameter on bentgrass golf green. Individual infected leaf near the margin of patch developed first red and finally turn brown. As zoysiagrass lawn, the symptom was 30~40cm circular patch that occured zoysiagrass shooting time as spring, and there could not sheeted in severe lesion. In case of sheeted, zoysiagrass was first irregular leaf sopt and finally dead. Hypha diameter of Rhizoctonia cerealis was $2.5~6.3\mu\textrm{m}$(average $3.8\mu\textrm{m}$) and colar was white to buff. Monilioid cell size was $5.8~12.5$\times$13.8~37.5\mu\textrm{m}$. Sclerotia size was 0.2~2.0mm and color was white to brown. Optium temperature for the hypha growth was $23^{\circ}C$. There was a little difference in pathogenicity among the isolates.

  • In addition to the emphasis on filial piety ethics in everyday life, filial piety obtained a further significance in Confucianism which had the strong sense of ancestor worship. This paper focuses on filial piety as a mechanism of continuity within Confucianism and points out that it owed its development to its connection to agricultural culture. The sedentary life with less mobility forged a relative intimacy among people and filial piety was the actual expression of that kind of intimate affection. Yet, filial piety in Confucianism created a unique culture in terms that it not only stipulated material and emotional support for parents but also expected one's piety to the further ancestors through a memorial service and made its connection to the infinite posterity through sons. From the perspective of Confucianism that established filial piety at the turning point from life to death, the self existing in present was not an isolated self anymore. Yet, one can see another characteristic of Confucianism from that filial piety, based on blood bonds, could move beyond paternalism to broaden itself. It could be expanded to the care for strangers. The aged experience and wisdom through agricultural life begot the insight that the nature made its infinite connections with everything through circulation. As a stone thrown in a pond would enlarge its boundary by drawing larger and larger concentric circles, this thought enabled people to enlarge their affection to their parents to universal humanity. In this enlarged network, though it was natural to make distinctions between the closer and the farther, Confucianism sought to overcome it by establishing oneself upright. Confucianism emphasized the moral cultivation with its filial piety concept that contained the diachronic thought penetrating life and death and the broadened perspective relating everything around. In Confucianism, filial piety provided an important medium in forming a moral subject that penetrated life and death and related self and others. Inherent in it is the Confucius thought of continuity that searched for a paragon of a moral human being regardless of time and space.

  • Baculovirus was originally isolated from the alfalfa looper and contains a 134-kbp genome with 154 open reading frames (ORF). The major capsid protein VP39 together with some minor proteins forms the nucleocapsid ($21nm{\times}260nm$) that encloses the DNA with p6.9 protein. They are double-stranded, circular, supercoiled DNA molecules in a rod-shaped capsid. Wild-type baculoviruses exhibit both lytic and occluded life cycles that develop independently throughout the three phases of virus replication. Recombinant baculoviruses can transfer their vectors and express their recombinant proteins in a wide range of mammalian cell types. Especially, inclusion of a dominant selectable marker in these baculoviral vectors can express diverse recombinant genes in many cells. Baculoviral vectors were reconstructed with cytomegalovirus (CMV) promoter, uroplakin II promoter, polyhedron promoter, vesicular stomatitis virus G (VSVG), enhanced green fluorescent protein (EGFP), protein transduction domain (PTD) gene and so on. These reconstructed vectors were infected into various cell and cell lines. We performed transfection and expression of these recombinant vectors comparison with other control vectors. From this study, we knew that transfection and expression of these recombinant vectors have higher efficacy than any control vector. This work was supported by a grant from Mid-Career Researcher Program(NRF-2016R1A2B4016552) through the National Research Foundation of Korea(NRF) funded by the Ministry of Science, ICT & Future Planning(MSIP).
