  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the influencing factors on externalized and internalized problem behaviors among high school students. Methods: The subjects for this study were 707 students in two high schools in K province. The data were collected during the period from October to November, 2014 by use of questionnaires. The instruments used were the Korean Youth Self-report, Daily Hassles Questionnaire, State-Trait Anger Expression Inventory, and Ego Resiliency Scale. The data were analyzed using SPSS. Results: Significant predictors to explain externalized problem behaviors comprised anger-out, anger-in, anger-control, relation with parents, daily stress, and religion. It was found that these factors explained 46% of externalized problem behavior. Ego resiliency, anger-in, daily stress, gender, relation with parent, and anger-out were significant predictors to explain internalized problem behaviors. It was found that these factors explained 45% of internalized problem behaviors. Conclusion: This study suggests that the influencing factors on problem behaviors differ from externalized and internalized problem behaviors. So these findings will provide the basic data to develop a program that is differentiated by problem behavior type.

  • The present study aims to analyze kickers' strategic actions for finishing in penalty shoot-outs among youth soccer players ultimately to increase success rates of shoot-outs and to score a victory. Subjects were experienced 271 soccer players attending high schools located around the capital area. To determine any difference in strategic actions for finishing in penalty shoot-outs among the subjects, frequency analysis or chi-square was used for the analysis. The analysis found the following points: First, the success or failure rates of kickers in penalty shoot-outs were found to depend on subjects' experiences as soccer players. Second, in terms of kickers' shooting qualities, they were found to shoot on goal regardless of shooting positions. Third, an important factor to enhance the shoot-outs probability was found to be a strategic action through the eyes. Fourth, in view of the strategic actions prior to kickers' shooting, goalies were found to check out kickers' positions first and estimate the directions and qualities of shooting via kickers' body actions and eye lines.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the impact of callous-unemotional traits(CU) on juvenile crime and explore additional effects of parenting and socioeconomic status on juvenile crime. A total of 103 juvenile probationers completed self-report questionnaires at 3 probation offices in Seoul, and a total of 123 high school students completed self-report questionnaires in Seoul and Gyeonggi. The results of this study were as follows. First, juvenile crime group showed higher score in uncaring subscale of CU, lower parent's education and lower economic level than normal group. Second, in both groups, uncaring subscale of CU showed negative correlations with parent's acceptance and daily monitoring. Third, in logistic regression, uncaring subscale of CU and low economic level significantly predicted juvenile crime group. This study suggests that uncaring characteristic of CU and socioeconomic status are potential factors contributing to juvenile crime.

  • Objects : This study was carried out to develop the Korean form of Leyton Obsessional Inventory-Child Version(LOI-CV) designed to assess the obsessive compulsive symptoms in children and adolescents. The LOI-CV was modified into a paper-and-pencil form in order to administer it to group. Methods : We applied the Korean form LOI-CV to 127 elementary, middle and high school children, and retest it to 82 children with 3 weeks interval. Together with LOI-CV, Korean form of SCL-90-R which had been proved its reliability and validity, were administered to the all subjects for examining of concurrent validity. And then we examined whether this scale discriminates between obsessive patients, psychiatric controls and normal controls in the level of obsessive symptoms. Results : Test-retest reliability, internal consistency were very satisfactory. Concurrent validity with SCL-90-R was moderate level. And obsessive patients was scored significantly higher than psychiatric and normal controls in the level of obsessive symptoms. In factor analysis, items are clustered to 5 factors. In the global obsessive symptom, obsessive scores of female elimentary school students were higher than that of male students. Conclusions : These results indicate that the Korean form of LOI-CV is reliable and valid self-rating scale to assess the obsessive-compulsive symptoms in Korean children and adolescents. Author suggests that future research is needed for Korean version standardization study in normal and clinic-refered population.

  • This study aims to analyze the effects of tooth-brushing facilities (TBF) at middle schools that installed TBF in 2012 as part of the oral health project in Seongdong-gu, Seoul. The subjects were the first graders at A middle school that installed TBF previously and B middle school that installed TBF in 2012. The results are as follows: DMFT, DMFS and CPI didn't show significant difference by schools (p>0.05), but code (0) was higher and code (2) was lower in female students than male students (p<0.05). As to PHP index, the students at A school with TBF indicated better oral hygiene (p<0.01). In the research on before and after installing TBF, the oral hygiene was improved significantly more after the installation than before (p <0.01). In the comparison on the oral health-related behavior, the percentage of not brushing after lunch was higher B school than A school and the frequency of toothbrushing after lunch was higher A school than B school (p<0.01). About the reasons why not to brush after lunch, there was difference in 'lack of the place' as A school showed 2.6% while B school without TBF indicated 14.2% (p<0.01). About the changes of the oral health-related behavior before and after TBF installation, the percentage of not brushing after lunch increased from 78.7% to 83.8% after the installation. The average frequency of tooth-brushing after lunch for one week also decreased from 0.50 to 0.34 (p>0.05). Among the reasons why not to brush after lunch, 'lack of the place' significantly reduced, but 'because other friends don't do it' increased greatly after the installation (p <0.05). Only with the improvement of oral health knowledge, we cannot expect either clinical or behavioral significance. Not only schools but policies of governmental agencies and financial support, cooperation of community-related groups for program development and evaluation will contribute altogether to helping teenagers to habitualize proper oral health management.

  • This research observes how an adolescent's usage of social network services is related with media use time, and also tries to verify how a parent's participation in acting to limit usage time serves as a mediating effect. For this analysis, data from The Korean Information Society Development Institute [Korea Media Panel Research] was used, being a survey conducted on 1,572 students from primary to secondary and high schools nationwide. The subjects' gender in the final analysis was 818 male students and 754 female students. In addition, primary school students consisted of 672 individuals, 416 were from secondary and 484 from high schools. To verify the appropriateness of the model proposed in this research, analyzed through the structural equation, using social network services(SNS) was not shown to have an effect on media usage time. However, there was an indirect effect from the use of alternative activities. In addition, the parent's limitation of usage showed no effect on media use time. This research attempts to identify the reasons why parents' limiting the usage time, along with alternative activities, do not have any significant effect in reducing media usage time in this era of smart media evolution. Further, this research hopes to suggest meaningful and political implications for the nation and society to understand and resolve media addiction.

  • Conducted within the framework of the Information Use Environments, this study analyzed the characteristics of students in high schools, identified the typical problems of the students and their information sources to resolve the problems, and analyzed the settings the students use daily. The survey questionnaires were distributed to 220 students in 3 different high schools located in the affluent community area of K-Ku in Seoul particularly known for high academic interests. 188 questionnaires were collected and analyzed using SPSS 24. The findings indicate that the students's attitudes toward education, going to college, and changes and innovations were positive. that they chose the internet as their most favorite information sources for problems, and that 21 problems in 7 self-categories were identified as the students' typical problems, and that the problems within emotional and cognitive self were considered the most important. It was interesting that the students use parents and siblings as information sources to resolve the problems within emotional and cognitive self, although they chose the internet as their favorite information sources in general. The settings that students use daily during weekdays were homes, schools, smart devices. academic tutoring centers, PC or laptop in order. The students' daily settings for weekends were homes, academic tutoring centers, restaurants, PC or laptop in order. These setting was statistically different according to gender and grades. The implications of this study were to suggest the further research questions and to show the application of the IUEs for understanding high school students in a specific setting. Further studies are needed to understand high school students in different contexts.

  • Objectives: Individuals differ in their biological rhythms. This study investigated the association between the morningness-eveningness and sleep patterns, daytime sleepiness and fatigue in Korean male adolescents. Methods: Participants were 501 eleventh grade male students ($16.9{\pm}0.2$ years of age) in one male high school in Seoul. Each student completed the Korean translation of composite scale (KtCS), Epworth sleepiness scale (ESS), Fatigue Severity Scale (FSS) and a questionnaire about their sleep schedule. Results: The evening group had shorter weekday sleep time than the intermediate (p<0.001) or morning group (p=0.029). The evening group had more daytime napping (16.8%, p<0.001), high rate of caffeine use (58.8%, p<0.001) and snoring (18.5%, p=0.037). The evening group showed more daytime sleepiness (8.7, SD=3.2, p<0.001) and severe fatigue (4.4, SD=1.2, p<0.001) than the intermediate or morning group. Conclusion: Adolescents with eveningness have higher problems in weekday sleep, daytime sleepiness and fatigue. An intervention program for sleep problem in these adolescents should be considered.
