The results of the study are summarized as follows. 1. The Korean Government appointed the textbooks used in school. The textbooks of home economics appointed in 1910 were 'Hanmun Gajeonghak(漢文家政學)' and 'Sinpyeon Gajeonghak(新編家政學)'. But Japanese government disapproved these textbooks soon after it fully controlled Korea. 2. 'Hyun Kong-Ryeom' who published the textbook of home economics was from translator family that was famous since early Chosun Dynasty. The translator at that time with good command of foreign language introduced foreign books to the intellectuals of Chosun Dynasty. The textbook of home economics was also translated at that time. 3. 'Hanmun Gajeonghak', 'Sinpyeon Gajeonghak' and 'Sinjeong Gajeonghak(新政家政學)' published by 'Hyun Kong-Ryeom' were the translations of the same book. 'Hyun Kong-Ryeom' published the 'Hanmun Gajeonghak' written in Chinese character and 'Sinpyeon Gajeonghak' written in Korean and Chinese character in combination in December 1907, which were translations of the textbook of home economics published by 'Oh Yeo Ryoon(吳汝綸)' in China in July 1902. The textbook of 'Oh Yeo Ryoon' was the Chinese translation of the 'Sinseon Gajeonghak (新選家政學)' that was published by 'Shimoda Utako(下田歌子), in Japan in 1900. 4. The textbook of home economics written by 'Hyun Kong-Ryeom' was composed of five units, that is, general introduction, management of family members, family norms, family hygiene and home economy. • Textbooks are one of the most crucial variables that determine the quality of education and one of the most influential sources for education. Textbooks should be designed with inquiring tendencies so as to help students to practice self-directed learning. inquiring textbooks can not only intrigue students but also enhance the quality of class. Here, this author is going to analyze the inquiring tendencies of a core construct, 'management', in 12 different types of high school Technology & Home Economics textbooks reflecting the 2015 revised national curriculum based on the Romey method. According to the analysis results, only one type of textbook shows inquiring tendencies in the text, which means that the text is more oriented to delivering knowledge rather than to pursuing students' inquiry learning. Because analysis indexes for figures and diagrams fall under the range of desirable inquiring tendencies in 10 types of textbooks, the figures and diagrams presented in Home Economics textbooks are intended to induce particular learning activity. Learning activity indexes reveal 9 types of textbooks' inquiring tendencies, which means that Home Economics textbooks present a reasonable amount of learning activity in general in order to intrigue students and stimulate their inquiring mind. In terms of evaluation indexes, only 2 types of textbooks show inquiring tendencies. According to the results of examining each individual textbook, some of the Home Economics textbooks reflecting the 2015 revised national curriculum include inquiring elements in the text, figures and diagrams, activities, and evaluation all; however, some still need improvements. Regarding how to better the Home Economics textbooks, this researcher will suggest the following implications and complements. Home Economics textbooks should include inquiring elements to induce interactions properly in the class, and when they write the textbooks, the text, figures and diagrams, activities, and evaluation should be designed balancedly, and the questions need to be expressed in a way to develop students' inquiring mind.

  • This study reviewed the Technology & Home Economics Education textbooks to examine if their illustrations would be appropriate for students' balanced view of gender. To this end, the textbooks of 'Technology & Home Economics Education 1 and 2' from 12 publishers (24 books in total) were analyzed focusing on the formative and content characteristics of illustrations in the textbooks. The results of this study is as follows. There were areas in the textbooks that may not be considered gender-equal. Although the textbooks have been improved to some extent from the previous versions, they still show gender stereotypes biased towards men. If students are constantly exposed to the prescriptive characteristics that are in favor of certain gender, they would find it difficult to develop their personality strengths, due to the gender role pressures. In order to help students cultivate sensitivity and activism toward the gender equality issues, it is important that the textbooks are gender-equal. To summarize, in order to suggest to students a balanced image of society with male and female cooperating with each other in diverse domains, it is deemed necessary to constantly examine and revise the textbooks for their gender stereotypic contents, and thereby, improve them for gender equality.

  • The purpose of this study was to find out how much home economics(HE) textbook was focused on what kind of factors in career education, by analyzing the HE textbooks from the 7th grade(1st grade of the middle school) to the 10th grade(1st grade of high school), which were developed by applying the 7th educational process. 12 textbooks which were published by three publishers were randomly selected by grade. This study used the instrument developed by Korea Research Institute for Vacational Education & Training(2001) as an analysis frame, along with a content analysis system. The results of this study were as follows. The publishers of HE textbook stressed similar points in each section of career education, evenly reflecting the objectives and contents of career education. Three kinds of publishers also placed the same weight on the factors of career education in each unit, and suggested the contents related to career education in the whole units. HE textbook was designed to lead learners to understand self and have interest in varied occupations. Additionally, it provided the learners with a chance to consider their career and occupation by means of detailed job information, and its contents including learning of occupational ability for job selection were useful to plan and prepare for career. Accordingly, as HE textbook is most effective to promote connection between work and learning and contains proper factors of career guidance, it is one of the most appropriate textbooks to deal with career education.
