  • This study was carried out to establish a proper cultivation condition and diagnose the drought-tolerance of three wild edible greens belonging to genus of Ligularia by using pressure-volume curves methods. The result of the original bulk osmotic pressure at maximum turgor ${\Psi}_{\circ}{^{sat}}$ was -0.8 MPa in Ligularia fischeri and L. stenocephala, which was somewhat lower than the value, -0.7 MPa, in L. fischeri var. spiciformis. In addition, the values of the osmotic pressure at incipient plasmolysis ${\Psi}_{\circ}{^{tlp}}$ in L. fischeri and L. stenocephala, both of which were -0.9 MPa, These were slightly lower than that of -0.8 MPa in L. fischeri var. spiciformis. On the other hand, it appeared that the values of maximum bulk modulus of elasticity $E_{max}$ of L. fischeri and L. stenocephala were approximately two times higher than that of L. fischeri var. spiciformis. However, There was a distinct difference between the values of the relative water contents in these three species. Therefore, Ligularia spp, occurring incipient plasmolysis in the high water contents, have a relatively low property of drought-tolerance, suggesting that growth of those Ligularia spp. are appropriate for relative moisture forest.

  • We report the expression, purification, and characterization of L-asparaginase (AnsA) from Rhizobium etli. The enzyme was purified to homogeneity in a single-step procedure involving affinity chromatography, and the kinetic parameters $K_m$, $V_{max}$, and $k_{cat}$ for L-asparagine were determined. The enzymatic activity in the presence of a number of substrates and metal ions was investigated. The molecular mass of the enzyme was 47 kDa by SDS-PAGE. The enzyme showed a maximal activity at $50^{\circ}C$, but the optimal temperature of activity was $37^{\circ}C$. It also showed maximal and optimal activities at pH 9.0. The values of $K_m$, $V_{max}$, $k_{cat}$, and $k_{cat}/K_m$ were $8.9{\pm}0.967{\times}10^{-3}$ M, $128{\pm}2.8$ U/mg protein, $106{\pm}2s^{-1}$, and $1.2{\pm}0.105{\times}10^4M^{-1}s^{-1}$, respectively. The L-asparaginase activity was reduced in the presence of $Mn^{2+}$, $Zn^{2+}$, $Ca^{2+}$, and $Mg^{2+}$ metal ions for about 52% to 31%. In addition, we found that $NH_4{^+}$, L-Asp, D-Asn, and ${\beta}$-aspartyl-hydroxamate in the reaction buffer reduced the activity of the enzyme, whereas L-Gln did not modify its enzymatic activity. This is the first report on the expression and characterization of the L-asparaginase (AnsA) from R. etli. Phylogenetic analysis of asparaginases reveals an increasing group of known sequences of the Rhizobial-type asparaginase II family.

  • Cefquinome, a fourth generation cephalosporin, has been solely used for veterinary medicine and has a broad antibacterial spectrum against gram-negatives and gram-positives being very stable to ${\beta}$-lactamases. This study was conducted to evaluate the bioequivalence of two cefquinome 2.5% products in piglets. Plasma cefquinome concentrations were analyzed by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC/MS). Mean maximum concentration ($C_{max}$) of test product ($Cequus^{(R)}$) and reference product ($Cobactan^{(R)}$) were $4.34{\pm}0.58$ and $4.22{\pm}0.47{\mu}g/mL$, and mean area under the concentration time curve ($AUC_{0{\rightarrow}{\infty}}$) values were $10.43{\pm}1.96$ and $10.25{\pm}2.98{\mu}g{\cdot}h/mL$, respectively. The 90% confidence intervals for the ratio of $C_{max}$ (0.941-1.115), and $AUC_{0{\rightarrow}{\infty}}$ (0.927-1.172) values for the test and reference products were within the acceptable bioequivalence limit of 0.80-1.25. It is concluded that two commercial cefquinome injectable solutions are bioequivalent in their extent of drug absorption in piglets.

  • In this report, the heat transfer model of spray cooling on hot surface was developed by focusing on the effect of rebound motion of droplets. In the model, it was assumed that droplets rebound repeatedly on the hot surface and heat transfer upon droplet impact is proportional to sensible heat which heats up the droplets to the saturation temperature. In addition, to take account of the contribution of th heat flux upon impact of rebound droplets, it was assumed that the rebound droplets are distributed following the Gaussian distribution from 0 to L, which distance L is determined by maximum flight distance $L_{max}$. Also the calculated results were compared with existing experimental results.

  • Complex of mulberry extract (CME) is composed of extracts of mulberry (Morus alba L.) fruit, mulberry leaves and black beans (Glycine max (L.) Merr.). In this study, we investigated prevention effects of CME on degenerative arthritis. The $SC_{50}$ value of DPPH radical scavenging by CME was $158.49{\pm}11.35{\mu}/mL$. We found that CME significantly reduced the production of nitric oxide (NO) and protein expression of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) in RAW 264.7 cells which were activated by LPS. Experiments using animal model of degenerative arthritis showed that CME (400 mg/kg body weight) inhibited the production of TNF-${\alpha}$ (77.5%) and IL-$1{\beta}$ (95.0%). Furthermore, it was observed that CME reduced to 85.9% of paw edema induced by carrageenan. These results suggest that CME could improve degenerative arthritis.

  • Solution processed zinc tin oxide (ZTO) thin films were studied using a spin coating for the fabrication of thin film transistors and simple circuits. The solution processed thin film transistors (W/L = 100/10 ${\mu}m$) have the average saturation mobility of 1.9 $cm^2$/Vs, threshold voltage of 20 V, and subthreshold slope of 0.5 V/decade. The dc characteristics of an inverter with $W_{load}=100\;{\mu}m$ and $W_{drive}=10\;{\mu}m$, measured under votage supply of $V_{DD}$ = +50 V. The inverter beta ratio is 20 ($R=(W_{drived}/L_{drive})/(W_{load}/L_{load})=20$) and $gain_{max}$ is 2. The characteristics of an oscillator were measured under voltage supply of $V_{DD}$ = +60 V.

  • Silverman [14] proved a height inequality for a jointly regular family of rational maps and the author [10] improved it for a jointly regular pair. In this paper, we provide the same improvement for a jointly regular family: let h : ${\mathbb{P}}_{\mathbb{Q}}^n{\rightarrow}{{\mathbb{R}}$ be the logarithmic absolute height on the projective space, let r(f) be the D-ratio of a rational map f which is de ned in [10] and let {$f_1,{\ldots},f_k|f_l:\mathbb{A}^n{\rightarrow}\mathbb{A}^n$} bbe finite set of polynomial maps which is defined over a number field K. If the intersection of the indeterminacy loci of $f_1,{\ldots},f_k$ is empty, then there is a constant C such that $ \sum\limits_{l=1}^k\frac{1}{def\;f_\iota}h(f_\iota(P))>(1+\frac{1}{r})f(P)-C$ for all $P{\in}\mathbb{A}^n$ where r= $max_{\iota=1},{\ldots},k(r(f_l))$.

  • We provide a direct proof of the following theorem of Kalton, Hollenbeck, and Verbitsky [7]: let H be the Hilbert transform and let a, b be real constants. Then for 1 < p < ${\infty}$ the norm of the operator aI + bH from $L^p(\mathbb{R})$ to $L^p(\mathbb{R})$ is equal to $$\({\max_{x{\in}{\mathbb{R}}}}{\frac{{\mid}ax-b+(bx+a){\tan}{\frac{\pi}{2p}}{\mid}^p+{\mid}ax-b-(bx+a){\tan}{\frac{\pi}{2p}}{\mid}^p}{{\mid}x+{\tan}{\frac{\pi}{2p}}{\mid}^p+{\mid}x-{\tan}{\frac{\pi}{2p}}{\mid}^p}}\)^{\frac{1}{p}}$$. Our proof avoids passing through the analogous result for the conjugate function on the circle, as in [7], and is given directly on the line. We also provide new approximate extremals for aI + bH in the case p > 2.

  • We investigate the existence of multiple nontrivial solutions $u(x,t)$ for a perturbation $b[({\xi}-{\eta}+2)^+-2]$ of the hyperbolic system with Dirichlet boundary condition $$(0.1)\;L{\xi}={\mu}[({\xi}-{\eta}+2)^+-2]\;in\;({-{\frac{{\pi}}{2}}},{\frac{{\pi}}{2}}){\times}\mathbb{R},\\L{\eta}={\nu}[({\xi}-{\eta}+2)^+-2]\;in\;({-{\frac{{\pi}}{2}}},{\frac{{\pi}}{2}}){\times}\mathbb{R},$$, where $u^+$=max{u,o}, ${\mu}$, ${\nu}$ are nonzero constants. Here L is the wave operator in $\mathbb{R}^2$ and the nonlinearity $({\mu}-{\nu})[({\xi}-{\eta}+2)^+-2]$ crosses the eigenvalues of the wave operator.

  • An L(2; 1)-labeling of a graph G is a function f from the vertex set V (G) to the set of all non-negative integers such that ${\mid}f(u)-f(v){\mid}{\geq}2$ if d(u, v) = 1 and ${\mid}f(u)-f(v){\mid}{\geq}1$ if d(u, v) = 2. The ${\lambda}$-number of G, denoted ${\lambda}(G)$, is the smallest number k such that G admits an L(2, 1)-labeling with $k=\max\{f(u){\mid}u{\in}V(G)\}$. In this paper, we consider the square of a cycle and provide exact value for its ${\lambda}$-number. In addition, we also completely determine its edge span.
