  • Cast austenitic stainless steel is used for several components, such as primary coolant piping, elbow, pump casing and valve bodies in light water reactors. These components are subject to thermal embrittlement at the reactor operating temperature. The objective of this study is to summarize the method of estimating ferrite content, Charpy impact energy and J-R curve and to evaluate the thermal embrittlement of the cast austenitic stainless steel piping used in the domestic nuclear power plants. The result of evaluation, two domestic nuclear power plants used CF-8M and CF-8A material has adequate fracture toughness after saturation.

  • The application of fractal concept provides an useful method in the study for the quantitative analysis of irregular variations like the fracture surfaces and crack profiles. Fractal curves have characteristics that represents a self-similarity based on the fractal dimension. The fractal dimensions were obtained by the box counting method. In this report, we obtained the nearly stable fractal dimensions of fracture crack profiles for STS316 with CT specimen as the crack advances and the relationships between crack length and fractal dimension. Moreover fractal fracture parameter that corresponds to J-R curve is shown by the relationships between fractal dimension and crack extension. From the results, we concluded that crack extension of high toughness material also shows the fractal characteristics, which can be used in order to evaluate the crack life precisely.

  • The point $P{\in}{\mathbb{P}}^2$ is referred to as a Galois point for a nonsingular plane algebraic curve C if the projection ${\pi}_P:C{\rightarrow}{\mathbb{P}}^1$ from P is a Galois covering. In contrast, the point $P^{\prime}{\in}C^{\prime}$ is referred to as a weak Galois Weierstrass point of a nonsingular algebraic curve C' if P' is a Weierstrass point of C' and a total ramification point of some Galois covering $f:C^{\prime}{\rightarrow}{\mathbb{P}}^1$. In this paper, we discuss the following phenomena. For a nonsingular plane curve C with a Galois point P and a double covering ${\varphi}:C{\rightarrow}C^{\prime}$, if there exists a common ramification point of ${\pi}_P$ and ${\varphi}$, then there exists a weak Galois Weierstrass point $P^{\prime}{\in}C^{\prime}$ with its Weierstrass semigroup such that H(P') = or , which is a semigroup generated by two positive integers r and 2r + 1 or 2r - 1, such that P' is a branch point of ${\varphi}$. Conversely, for a weak Galois Weierstrass point $P^{\prime}{\in}C^{\prime}$ with H(P') = or , there exists a nonsingular plane curve C with a Galois point P and a double covering ${\varphi}:C{\rightarrow}C^{\prime}$ such that P' is a branch point of ${\varphi}$.

  • A total of 1088 observations (272 in B, 272 in V, 272 in R, and 272 in I) were made from January to February in 1995 at Chungbuk National University observatory(CbNUO). We constructed BVRI light curves with our data. The photometric solution of these light curves was obtained by means of the Wilson-Devinney method. Our result was compared with those by previous investigators.

  • The application of fracture mechanics is being increased gradually to assess the safety of welded structures containing crack. Fatigue crack propagation behavior and elastic-plastic fracture toughness J$_{IC}$ of home made flux cored wire(1.22mm) CO$_{2}$ weldments was discussed. Especially fatigue crack propagation test was carried out by .DELTA.K control instead of load control and elastic-plastic fracture toughness J$_{IC}$ was obtained by ASTM-R curve method on C.T.specimen in transverse direction of weldments. The results obtained are as follows; (1) Weld metal presented an almost complete similarity to base metal on fatigue crack propagation rate in transverse direction. (2) Weld metal was more than base metal on J$_{IC}$ value in transverse direction. (3) F.C.W. CO$_{2}$ weldments had an excellent characteristic of fatigue crack propagation rate and J$_{IC}$ in less than 50kg/mm$^{2}$ steel grade, this would result from that weld metal had good static strength.trength.

  • Let C be a curve and V → C an orthogonal vector bundle of rank r. For r ≤ 6, the structure of V can be described using tensor, symmetric and exterior products of bundles of lower rank, essentially due to the existence of exceptional isomorphisms between Spin(r, ℂ) and other groups for these r. We analyze these structures in detail, and in particular use them to describe moduli spaces of orthogonal bundles. Furthermore, the locus of isotropic vectors in V defines a quadric subfibration QV ⊂ ℙV . Using familiar results on quadrics of low dimension, we exhibit isomorphisms between isotropic Quot schemes of V and certain ordinary Quot schemes of line subbundles. In particular, for r ≤ 6 this gives a method for enumerating the isotropic subbundles of maximal degree of a general V , when there are finitely many.

  • Elastic-plastic fracture toughness J$_{IC}$ can be used as an effective design criterion in elastic plastic fracture mechanics. In the J$_{IC}$ test methods approved by ASTM and JSME, there are discrepancies such as the definition of J$_{IC}$, the slope of the blunting line, curve fitting method and the measurement of crack extension etc. The objective of this paper is to evaluate the effect of these discrepancies on the determination of J$_{IC}$ values. Fracture toughness tests were performed on A516, SA508 and SCM415 steels, and test results were analyzed according to ASTM E 813-81, ASTM E 813-87 and JSME S 001-1981. Results showed significant differences depending on the analysis methods. Therefore, a conversion equation between two ASTM methods was proposed, and the conversion error was within acceptable range(less then 8.5%)en 8.5%)

  • Since standardized fracture test specimens cannot be easily extracted from in-service components, several alternative fracture toughness test methods have been proposed to characterize the deformation and fracture resistance of materials. One of the more promising alternatives is the local approach employing the SP(Small Punch) testing technique. However, this process has several limitations such as a lack of anisotropic yield potential and tediousness in the damage parameter calibration process. The present paper investigates estimation of ductile fracture resistance(J-R) curve by FE(Finite Element) analyses using an anisotropic damage model and enhanced calibration procedure. In this context, specific tensile tests to quantify plastic strain ratios were carried out and SP test data were obtained from the previous research. Also, damage parameters constituting the Gurson-Tvergaard-Needleman model in conjunction with Hill's 48 yield criterion were calibrated for a typical nuclear reactor material through a genetic algorithm. Finally, the J-R curve of a standard compact tension specimen was predicted by further detailed FE analyses employing the calibrated damage parameters. It showed a lower fracture resistance of the specimen material than that based on the isotropic yield criterion. Therefore, a more realistic J-R curve of a reactor material can be obtained effectively from the proposed methodology by taking into account a reduced load-carrying capacity due to anisotropy.

  • A method is proposed to evaluate the elastic-plastic fracture resistance curve only with load displacement records without the crack length measurement in CT specimen. This method is based on the idea that the effect of plastic deformation and the crack growth can be measured only by using a load-displacement record. If we know the reference-load curve representing the hardening of specimen, then the crack extension can be calculated by the elastic compliance determined from the load ratio. The results of this proposed method were compared to those of the elastic-plastic fracture resistance curve for the ASTM standard unloading compliance method. The experimental results for two kinds of ductile materials showed that the proposed method well simulates the material J-R curves. This method is currently applied for CT specimens. but it can be extended to the other specimen geometries.
