  • A novel power amplifier for a polar transmitter is proposed to achieve better spectral performance for a wideband envelope signal. In the proposed scheme, 2-bit sigma-delta (${\Sigma}{\Delta}$) modulation of the envelope signal is introduced, and the power amplifier configuration is modified in a binary form to accommodate the 2-bit digitized envelope signals. The 2-bit ${\Sigma}{\Delta}$ modulator lowers the noise of the envelope signal by fine quantization and thus enhances the spectral property of the RF signal. The Ptolemy simulation results of the proposed structure show that the spectral noise is reduced by 10 dB in a full transmit band of the EDGE system. The dynamic range is also enhanced. Since the performance is improved without increasing the over-sampling ratio, this technique is best suited for wireless communication with high data rates.

  • In this paper, phase-locked loop (PLL) of a combinational architecture consisting of an adaptive bandwidth and fractional-N is presented to improve performances and reduce the order of ${\Delta}{\Sigma}$ modulator while maintaining equivalent or better performance with fast locking. The architecture of adaptive bandwidth PLL was simulated by HSPICE using 0.35m CMOS parameters. The behavioral simulation of the proposed adaptive bandwidth fractional-N PLL with a ${\Delta}{\Sigma}$ modulator was carried out by using MatLab to determine if the architecture could achieve the objectives. The HSPICE simulation showed that this type of PLL was able to fast locking, and reduce fractional spurs about 20dB.

  • Oversampling modulators based on high-order sigma-delta modulation provide an effective means of achieving high-resolution A/D conversion in a VLSI technology. Because high-order noise shaping great]y reduces the quantization noise in the signal band. This paper introduces a third-order cascaded sigma-delta modulator that is stable for large input level. Modulator was simulated 3.3V single power supply voltage in 0.65$\mu\textrm{m}$ CMOS technology. It achieves 80㏈ SNR for a 20㎑ input signal bandwidth. A lock frequency is 3㎒ that is 80 oversampling ratio.

  • The polar delta-sigma modulator (DSM) transmitter architecture exhibits good coding efficiency and can be used for software-defined radio applications. However, the necessity of high clock speed is one of the major drawbacks of using this transmitter architecture. This study proposes a low-complexity timeinterleaved architecture for the polar DSM transmitter baseband part to reduce the clock speed requirement of the polar DSM transmitter using an upsampling technique. Simulations show that using the proposed four-branch timeinterleaved polar DSM transmitter baseband part, the clock speed requirement of the transmitter is reduced by four times without degrading the signal-tonoise-and-distortion ratio.

  • This paper proposes a new switched-capacitor sigma-delta modulator for automotive radars. Developed modulator is used to perform high-resolution analog-to-digital conversion (ADC) of high frequency band signal in a radar system. It has supply voltage of 2.7V, and has body-effect compensated switch configuration with low voltage and low distortion. The modulator has been implemented in a $0.25{\mu}m$ double-poly and triple-metal standard CMOS process, and it has die area of $1.9{\times}1.5mm^{2}$. It showed better total harmonic distortion of 20dB than the conventional bootstrapped circuit at the supply voltage of 2.7V.

  • This paper presents the design of the incremental delta-sigma ADC. The proposed circuit consists of pre-amplifier, S & H circuit, MUX, delta-sigma modulator, and decimation filter. Third-order discrete-time delta-sigma modulator with 1-bit quantization were fabricated by a $0.18{\mu}m$ CMOS technology. The designed circuit show that the modulator achieves 87.8 dB signal-to-noise and distortion ratio (SNDR) over a 5 kHz signal bandwidth and differential nonlinearity (DNL) of ${\pm}0.25$ LSB, integral nonlinearity (INL) of ${\pm}0.2$ LSB. Power consumption of delta-sigma modulator is $941.6{\mu}W$. It was decided that N cycles are 200 clock for 16-bits output.

  • This paper presents a 18-mW, 2.5-㎓ fractional-N frequency synthesizer with l-bit $4^{th}$-order interpolative delta-sigma ($\Delta{\;}$\sum$)modulator to suppress fractional spurious tones while reducing in-band phase noise. A fractional-N frequency synthesizer with a quadruple prescaler has been designed and implemented in a $0.5-\mu\textrm{m}$ 15-GHz $f_t$ BiCMOS. Synthesizing 2.1 GHzwith less than 200 Hz resolution, it exhibits an in-band phase noise of less than -85 dBc/Hz at 1 KHz offset frequency with a reference spur of -85 dBc and no fractional spurs. The synthesizer also shows phase noise of -139 dBc/Hz at an offset frequency of 1.2 MHz from a 2.1GHz center frequency.

  • This paper presents design of the second-order sigma-delta modulator for converting voltage and temperature signals to digital ones in Battery Management IC (BMIC) for mobile applications. The second-order single-loop switched-capacitor sigma-delta modulator with 1-bit quantization in 0.13-um CMOS technology is proposed. The proposed modulator is designed using switched-opamp technique for saving power consumption. With an oversampling ratio of 256 and clock frequency of 256kHz, the modulator achieves a measured 83-dB dynamic range and a peak signal-to-(noise+distortion) ratio (SNDR) of 81.7dB. Power dissipation is about 0.66 mW at 3.3 V power supply and the occupied core area is $0.425mm^2$.

  • In this paper, we propose a new gain optimization technique for Sigma-Delta A/D converters. In the proposed scheme, multiple gain set candidates showing maximum SNR in the modulator block are selected, and then multiple gain set candidates are investigated for minimum MSE in decimation block. Through CIC decimation filter simulation, it is shown that second SNR ranking candidate in modulation block is the best gain set.

  • In this paper, we only describe the digital block of two-channel 18-bit analog-to-digital (A/D) converter employing sigma-delta method and xl28 decimation. The device contains two fourth comb filters with 1-bit input from sigmadelta modulator. each followed by a digital half band FIR(Finite Impulse Response) filters. The external analog sigma-delta modulators are sampled at 6.144MHz and the digital words are output at 48kHz. The fourth-order comb filter has designed 3 types of ways for optimal power consumption and signal-to-noise ratio. The following 3 digital filters are designed with 12tap, 22tap and 116tap to meet the specification. These filters eliminate images of the base band audio signal that exist at multiples of the input sample rate. We also designed these filters with 8bit and 16bit filter coefficient to analysis signal-to-noise ratio and hardware complexity. It also included digital output interface block for I2S serial data protocol, test circuit and internal input vector generator. It is fabricated with 0.35um HYNIX standard CMOS cell library with 3.3V supply voltage and the chip size is 2000um by 2000um. The function and the performance have been verified using Verilog XL logic simulator and Matlab tool.
