Aim & Scope

Aims Firstly, The Korean Society for Aviation and Aeronautics (KSAA) aims at conducting research for both the aviation and also aerospace studies. This is mainly due to the fact that the Korean air law deals with aircrafts that fly into the atmosphere. Spacecraft, also flies into the atmosphere and is hence considered as a type of aircraft according to the Korean air law. Therefore, the society seeks theories and scientific studies on occurrences in the atmosphere. These comprises of studies on the atmosphere, meteorology, thermodynamics, hydromechanics and environmental engineering. Secondly, the KSAA aims at developing pilot training through research on fundamentals of piloting, pilot education and aviation psychology. This purpose shall be achie ved by either theoretical or scientific studies of flight information and procedure, flight navigation theories, ins trumental flight theories, other oper ation related technic improvement and airspace management (flight plan, changes of flight plan and reserved airspace). Thirdly, the KSAA would also be conducting research on personnel management and facilities. This includes studies on personnel organizations and personnel management such as per sonnel selection, training and qualification, personnel welfare management. In relation to facilities, there will be new knowledge and theories on design of aviation airport, security and additional facilities, methods and management of oper ation through research studies. The studies will be developed by established academic theories, scientific investigation and academic research. Scope of the research 1.     The purpose of study is to investigate the current user interface level of air traffic control system with the usability analysis and satisfaction survey questionnaire on user satisfaction. Think aloud protocol is used to identify not only task analysis, but also the level of user-friendliness of the FIMS and ASDE system, and the user interface questionnaires was conducted by QUIS. We collected data from 6 controllers for Think aloud protocol and 15 controllers for QUIS in Incheon airport. The results showed that the system was the valuable tool for ensuring human performance with the support of memory and the facilitation of decision-making tasks. It helps air traffic controllers perform better and minimize errors in a congested time. The human-computer interface system design, however, was not applied, which led to the increase of workload. Air traffic controller participation in software development provided excellent examples for applications in terms of software in FIMS. Based on these results, the study provided that the usability of system interface was necessary to take into account human factors. The development and design of system was discussed in User Interface environment.

    The purpose of this research was to develop evaluation conformity to operate courses based on CIPP evaluation model dedicated to approval of training organizations. In order to achieve the goal, the researchers scrutinized related documents and precedent studies, initiated the draft for evaluation conformity to operate courses and secured validity for evaluation conformity initiated through Delphi Method survey. To secure validity for evaluation conformity, the researchers conducted two Delphi Method surveys of an expert panel of 22 professionals from relevant fields including officials from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, researchers from Korea Transportation Safety Authority, instructors from approved training organizations and officials from industries. Through the surveys, the researchers determined 4 evaluation areas, 13 evaluation items and 52 evaluation indexes as the evaluation conformity to operate courses for aircraft maintenance mechanics. On top of that, the researchers established evaluation system in the courses for aviation professionals (aircraft maintenance mechanics), and suggested a follow-up studies regarding managing the quality of education.

    Low Cost Carrier(LCC)s in Asia Pacific market are expected to record high growth due to the expansion of Open Sky Policy among Korea, Japan, China and South East Asia. As everybody is aware of, LCC is not only saving flight cost but also creates differentiating business model by reducing unnecessary services such as F&B and in-flight duty free sales services. Booming LCCs in Asian market will cause not only Incheon airport but also other local airports in Korea to compete heavily to attract LCCs. For example, Air Asia Group with more than 200 fleet has expanded its alliance network throughout Asia. Therefore this paper has researched a new business model operating a LCC terminal for the hub airport competitiveness. According to analysis result of case study, it was found out, considering increasing airline demand next decade, Incheon airport and other domestic airports in Korea had better change an existing terminal into a LCC Terminal(LCCT) to differentiate airport services and expand its hub network. That is because of economic feasibility, first of all, of securing hub and spoke networking capabilities with airlines and finally of developing commercial facilities customizing LCC passengers' demand.

    As global warming becoming an environmentally serious issue, more attention is drawn to fuel consumption which is the direct source of green house gas emission. The fuel consumption by aircraft operation is not an exception. Motivated by the societal and environmental context, this paper explains a method for estimation of aircraft fuel consumed during their flights as well as the computational process using real flight track data. Applying so-called 'Total Energy Model' along with aircraft specific parameters provided in EUROCONTROL's Base of Aircraft Data (BADA) to aircraft radar track data, we estimate fuel consumption of individual aircraft flown between Gimpo and Jeju airports. We then assess the estimation accuracy by comparing the estimated fuel consumption with the actual one collected from an airline. The computational results are quite encouraging in that the method is able to estimate the actual fuel consumption within ${\pm}6{\sim}11%$ of error margin. The limitations and possible enhancements of the method are also discussed.

    Aviation safety issues have drawn much attention from the international community due to the growing demand for air travel. Although it is a widely accepted fact that human-related factors are closely linked to aviation safety, there is lack of understanding what roles those factors play in aviation, in the field of air traffic control in particular. It has been reported that the role of air traffic controllers significantly affects air safety. This review will discuss cognitive aspects of expertise in air traffic control including time perception, working memory, reasoning, perception, attention, scanning/vigilance, decision making, and planning with examples of how each aspect can be dealt with in performing air traffic control duties. The relevant studies in psychology have also been briefly reviewed in the interest of enhancing understanding of characteristics of air traffic control tasks and the related human factors. This review concludes with a call for more in-depth research into cognitive factors in air traffic control.

    The purpose of this research was to identify expertise in ait traffic control by using cognitive skill analysis for novices and experts in routine and non-routine situations. The result of study was to understand expertise in air traffic control tasks in terms of what cognitive processes are responsible for the expert's high performance levels. The problem solving task was difficult for novices, but performed relatively automatically by experts in a routine situation. The difficulty could indicate the presence of controlled processing. Rather than rules and strategies, novices focused more on environmental factors, which merely increase cognitive load. In a non-routine situation, novices showed that they did not categorize the information consistently and alternative resources were not available for them. Experts, however, performed automatically a task by arranging and organizing information related to problem solving components in contexts without regard to a routine and non-routine situation. Especially experts developed a stable representation and directed alternative resources for air traffic flow and efficiency. Based on the results, cognitive processes of experts could be useful to understand expert performance and analyze the learning process, which imply the necessity of developing expertise systematically.

    There were a total of 65 accidents of helicopers between 1990 and 2013. The overall accidents rate has remained around 8 accidents per 100,000 flight hours, and the fatal rate has stayed at about 8 accidents per 100,000 flight hours. In this study, we conduct a series of statistical analyses to investigate the significance of latent failure of groups that operate the helicopter. Analysis of variance demonstrated significant differences in the latent condition score for the 3 groups, with the lower accidents rate groups reporting better scores of latent condition. Results indicated that there are the significant differences of latent condition in accidents between groups of high accidents rate and groups of low accidents rate.

    Unmanned aerial vehicles(UAVs) refer to the aircraft which carries no human pilot and is operated under remote control or in autonomous operational mode. As the UAVs can perform the dull, dangerous and difficult missions, various kinds of UAVs with different sizes and weights have been developed and operated for both civil and military application. As the avionics and communication technology related to the UAVs are matured, the demand for the UAVs is dramatically increased. Therefore, It is important to develope airworthiness process and regulations of the UAVs to minimize related risk to the man and environment. This paper describes related regulations and classification of the small UAVs for different international airworthiness authorities. The analysis of the CS-LURS verses Stanag 4702 and Stanag 4703 can provide guidelines for the generation of the airworthiness certification criteria for the small UAVs in civil sector. This paper conducted kinetic impact energy analysis of the loss of the small UAVs control scenarios and of the very small UAVs under 66 joules. Based on the analysis, the energy impact analysis can be considered before the design certification approval for the small UAVs.

    A lunar lander demonstrator developed for the purpose of demonstrating lunar landing technologies recently in Korea. The thruster control system of the lunar lander demonstrator adopted the main thrusters for altitude control and the reaction thrusters for attitude control. In this paper, we propose a path tracking controller base on Euler angles. The control signals of the controller are of continuous type. And Pulse Width Modulator(PWM) is adopted to provide On/Off signals. We perform MATLAB simulation for evaluating the path tracking performance and the final landing velocity of the lunar lander demonstrator.

    In the development of an avionics system, there is a trend of using commercial-off-the-shelf(COTS) equipments in order to reduce the development cost and time. In this paper, we present an implementation of an aircraft mission computer using the objected oriented software and the COTS equipments. We execute the aircraft guidance software on the system, and measure the calculation time and the used memory. To compare the guidance capability of the software program, we implement the same software logic on DS1104 system. The guidance software program executed on two different systems resulted in the almost identical simulation.

    In spite of ICAO's effort to ensure the safety of flight operation by requiring crews, controllers, and other ground aviation staffs to use unified system for units, SI (System International of units), there are still many aircrafts designed, manufactured, and operated based on non-SI units, and many crew training in airline companies are also conducted based on non-SI. Due to this confusion of using different unit systems in international flight operation, many crew members and passengers are exposed to danger. International flights pilots may have confusion while flying different airspaces of different countries that use different unit systems, and this may cause human errors causing accidents and incidents. Due to these reasons, it is needed to establish the standards to reflect non-SI that many countries practically use to SI, which is international standard.

    In this study, control of oxidizer mass flow rate and verification of control system were performed for hybrid rocket thrust control application. Oxidizer flow control system consists of ball valve and stepping motor where gaseous oxygen was used for oxidizer at feeding pressure of 10, 20 and 30 bar. According to experimental results, the oxidizer mass flow rate showed a relatively linear increment as ball valve open angle increases regardless of feeding pressure. In addition, the level of the oxidizer flow rate was kept almost constant at each sequence of flow control with ball valve during the 20 seconds of operation.

    Airline and medical industry in Korea have rapidly grown since 21st century. However, air ambulance service using an aircraft has not as popular as in Japan, Europe or United States. Central government has decided to start emergency helicopter service since 2011 to transport emergency patients transported in the past by fire fighter helicopter. Unfortunately, 32 OECD countries out of 33 have operated emergency aircraft system except Korea. There are more than 25 emergency helicopters in Japan, which can operate within five minutes. Such system could save a lot of social direct or in-direct cost by saving valuable lives of Japan citizens. This paper has tried to research the perception of overseas Russian medical tourists on using Air ambulance for their medical tourism to Korea. Researching air ambulance, this paper expects to find ways to enhance both medical tourism industry and airline, business jet industry. According to research results, it was proven that tangibility of medical tourism service has a positive effect on the human factor of air ambulance. The human factor has also a significant impact on the passenger comfortableness of air ambulance. Such comfortableness increases the overall satisfaction of medical tourism.

    In this study, we surveyed the operating status of the Parachute, Paraglider and Hang Glider in Korea, and compared the Airworthiness Standards of Ultralight Vehicle. We analyzed the procedures of certifications and specifications for Parachute, Paraglider and Hang Glider. We were presented with respected the two kinds of certification methods applied. One of them is a Compliance Certification applied to the manufacture, and one for a Airworthiness Certification to be applied to the operator.

    Ground-Based Augmentation System (GBAS) is providing precision approach and landing service with aircraft around airport. FAA granted System Design Approval (SDA) of SLS-4000 to Honeywell as the first GBAS category I system on September 2009. Since then, according to their own kind of approval process including System Design Approval, Facility Approval and Operational Approval, USA, Germany, Spain and Australia have approved GBAS category I system which are installed in some airports in order to provide commercial GBAS service. Recently, KARI has also installed GBAS category I system into Gimpo international airport to establish operational technology of GBAS domestically and to validate effectiveness of GBAS system in Korea. This paper introduces overseas trends and activities regarding approval process of GBAS system and presents approval process and criteria appropriate for future commercial operation of GBAS in Korea.
