Purpose : This study was conducted to determine the effect of intervention using a smartphone application on abdominal muscle thickness and maximum voluntary ventilation when conducting pelvic floor muscle exercise (PFME). Methods : This study was performed on 14 subjects. They were divided into two groups; PFME using smartphone application (n=7), common PFME (n=7). Both of group executed the exercise 5 times a week for 1 weeks. Abdominal muscle thickness was measured using ultrasound. Maximum voluntary ventilation was measured using a spirometer. The smartphone application used the paid version of Kegel trainer. This material was analyzed by the paired t-test to compare differences on each group and the independent t-test to compare between the two groups. Results : The PFME group using the smartphone application showed a significant increase in the transverse abdominis and internal oblique muscles (p<.05). The common PFME group showed a significant increase in the internal oblique muscle (p<.05). There was no significant difference in variation of the muscle thickness between the two groups (p>.05). The PFME group using the smartphone application showed a significant increase in the maximal voluntary ventilation (p<.05). There was no significant difference in variation of the maximal voluntary ventilation between the two groups (p>.05). Conclusion : As a results of this study, PFME using a smartphone application seems to induce voluntary participation of subjects and maintain continuity against time constraints. As a result, it is thought that using a smartphone application when performing PFME is efficient and convenient in terms of research method. However, this study is difficult to generalize due to the small number of subjects and short intervention period. Therefore, additional research should be conducted by modifying and supplementing these limitations.

Purpose : The stress of job-seeking college students is gradually worsening due to the continuing recession in the job market. Therefore, this study aims to verify whether intervention with an 'aromatherapy education program,' which combines theory and practice, has greater effect on stress, self-efficacy, and autonomic nervous system function than simple inhalation of essential oils in female college students preparing for employment. Methods : A single-blind, randomized controlled trial was conducted once a week for a total of 4 weeks with 29 female college students preparing for employment. Interventions included essential oil inhalation combined with an aromatherapy education program (experimental group(EG), n=14) and essential oil inhalation alone (control group(CG), n=15); measurements were taken before, immediately after, and 2 weeks after completion of the intervention. Evaluations were conducted using the job-seeking stress scale, stress VAS, self-efficacy scale, and a pulse-wave measuring instrument. Results : There were significant differences between the CG and EG groups with repeated measurements of job-seeking stress (p=.003), cognitive stress (p<.001), and self-efficacy (p<.001). There was a significant interaction between group and time. There were also significant differences between the CG and EG in terms of autonomic nervous system changes stress index(p=.047), total power(p=.029), high frequency(p=.036), and low frequency/high frequency ratio(p=.049). However, there was no significant difference in low frequency between the groups. Conclusion : The aromatherapy education program was more effective in improving job-seeking stress, cognitive stress, self-efficacy, and autonomic nervous system function than simple essential oil inhalation. For the aromatherapy education program to be useful as a complementary intervention for stress management in job seekers, it will be necessary to gather additional evidence of its efficacy by conducting follow-up studies with diverse participants and expanding the numbers, and durations, of the interventions.

Purpose : Stabilization exercise and respiratory muscle training are used to train trunk muscles that affect postural control and respiratory function. However, there have been no studies that combine stabilization exercise and respiratory muscle training. The purpose of this study is to investigate effects of stabilization exercise with and without respiratory muscle training on respiratory function and postural sway. Methods : Fifteen healthy adults were recruited for this experiment. All the subjects performed stabilization exercise with and without respiratory muscle training. For stabilization exercise with respiratory muscle training, the subjects sat on a gym ball wearing a stretch sensor. The subjects inspire maximally as long as possible during lifting one foot off the ground, alternately for 30 seconds. The stretch sensor was placed on both anterior superior iliac spine (ASIS), and the stretch sensor was used to monitor inspiration. For stabilization exercise without respiratory muscle training, the subjects sat on a gym ball and lifted one foot off the ground, without respiratory muscle training. Kinovea program used to investigate postural sway tracking during exercise. The maximum inspiratory pressure (MIP) and maximum expiratory pressure (MEP) were measured using a spirometer to investigate changes of respiratory muscle strength before and after exercise. A paired t-test was used to determine significant differences postural sway tracking, MIP, and MEP between stabilization exercise with and without respiratory muscle training. Results : There were significantly lower a distance of postural sway tracking during stabilization exercise with respiratory muscle training, compared with stabilization exercise without respiratory muscle training (p<.05). The MIP and MEP were significantly increased after stabilization exercise with respiratory muscle training compared with before stabilization exercise with respiratory muscle trianing (p<.05). Conclusion : The results of this study suggest that stabilization exercise with repiratory muscle training would be recommended to improve postural control and respiratory muscle strength. -
Purpose : As the population aging deepens, the number of elderly people with arthritis is also continuously increasing. Accordingly, this study intended to identify the factors influencing the health-related quality of life (HINT-8) of the elderly with arthritis according to household type and provide baseline data for developing a measure to enhance the life quality of the elderly with arthritis. Methods : The factors influencing the health-related quality of life (HINT-8) of the elderly with arthritis were identified based on the raw data from the Korea national health and nutrition examination survey conducted in 2021. Data were analyzed with SPSS Statistics ver 25.0 for windows (IBM Corp), and the significance level (α) was set to .05. Statistical analysis was performed with t-test, ANOVA, multiple regression analysis, and post-hoc analysis with Duncan test. Results : The factors that influenced the health-related quality of life (HINT-8) of single-households were medical aid (β=-.17, p=.045), restriction of activity (β=-.17, p=.023), self-rated health status (β=.29, p<.001), and anxiety scale (β=-.36, p<.001). The factors that influenced the health-related quality of life (HINT-8) of multi-households were an age of 75 or over (β=-.14, p=.011), living in rural (β=-.14, p=.003), the outpatient department treatment experience (β=-.09, p=.047), self-rated health status (β=.26, p<.001), anxiety scale (β=-.29, p<.001), and stress (β=-.22, p<.001). Conclusion : Factors affecting the health-related quality of life (HINT-8) of the elderly with arthritis were found to be different between single-person households and multi-person household. Therefore, it is necessary to prepare measures to improve the quality of life of the elderly with arthritis by considering the factors influencing the health-related quality of life (HINT-8) of the elderly with arthritis according to the household type identified in this study.

Purpose : This study aimed to systematically review the correlation between hand dexterity and cognitive function in the elderly, and summarize various evaluation tests and results analysis methods for manual dexterity tests applied to this population. Methods : We searched published studies in the Korean Studies Information Service System and PubMed databases from January 2013 to March 2023. The main keywords used were "dexterity," "fine motor," "elderly," "cognitive function," and "correlation." A total of 10 studies were selected for analysis from the 1,524 searched articles. The included studies consisted of a cohort study, a longitudinal study, and eight cross-sectional studies which were analyzed for patients, intervention, comparison, and outcomes. Results : Analyzing the qualitative level of 10 studies, 8 articles (80%) were non-randomized two-group studies that provided level II evidence whereas the remaining 2 studies (20%) were non-randomized single-group studies (level III evidence). Therefore, these results indicated that the level of evidence in this field is generally high. The Purdue pegboard test was the most commonly used evaluation test for manual dexterity, and velocity speed was the most frequently employed analysis method. Results indicated that there were significant differences in manual dexterity test between the normal elderly, those with mild cognitive impairment, or dementia. Conclusions : These results can be used as a basis for selecting dexterity test evaluation items and methods to analyze it in the elderly while screening for cognitive impairment. In addition, this study highlights potential areas for future research on the development of manual dexterity evaluation tools and techniques for analysis and the need for more reliable and valid methods for assessing cognitive function in the elderly.

Purpose : Epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT) is recognized as an important cellular response in metastatic proceduresand characterized by loss of cellular polarity as well as gain of mesenchymal features, which enables migration and invasion. Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is one of the most common primary carcinomas in the liver and exhibits a poor prognosis due to frequent extrahepatic metastasis. Taraxacum officinale has been used for a long time in oriental medicine because of its various pharmacological activitiessuch as anti-rheumatic, anti-inflammatory, antioxidative, and anticarcinogenic activities. In this study, the anti-metastatic activity of T. officinale water extract (TOWE) and ethanol extract (TOEE) was investigated through the regulation of EMT in the Huh7 cells. Methods : The effects of TOWE and TOEE on migratory and invasive activities were investigated by wound healing and in vitro invasion assays. Western blot analysis was also applied to analyze protein expression levels associated with EMT and their upstream transcription factors in Huh7 cells. Results : TOWE and TOEE treatment potently inhibited migration and invasion of Huh7 cells compared to the untreated group. Both extracts treatment inhibited protein expression levels of N-cadherin, matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-9, and vimentin while E-cadherin was significantly accelerated. In addition, the activated status of transcription factors, Snail, nuclear factor (NF)-κ B, and zinc finger E-box binding homeobox (ZEB)1 was also inhibited with statistical significance. In comparison to both extracts, TOEE more potently attenuated migration, invasion, and EMT markers as well as their transcription factors in Huh7 cells than TOWE, which means that TOEE might possess more functional phytochemicals than TOWE. Conclusion : Consequently, TOWE and TOEEattenuated metastatic activity of hepatocellular carcinoma through the regulation of EMT markers and their transcription factors in Huh7 cells, which means that T. officinale might be a promising strategy for a chemopreventive agent against HCC metastasis.

Purpose : Until recently, the number of cancer patients continues to increase, and these patients have many limitations in their activities of daily living. In the republic of Korea, cancer patients are showing an increasing trend every year. Cancer disease not only significantly reduces the quality of life in individuals, but also causes various side effects if not managed. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of aerobic exercise and resistance exercise on health-related problems in cancer patients. Methods : This study searched for studies that applied aerobic exercise and resistance exercise to cancer patients reported in search engines (google scala, dbpia, and pubmed) from 2017 to 2022. Six randomized controlled trials and two systematic reviews and meta-analyses were used for analysis in our study. "physical activity", "exercise", "aerobic exercise", "resistance exercise", and "cancer patient" were the main search terms. The data included aerobic exercise, resistance exercise, cancer patients' muscle strength, physical strength, quality of life, and physical activity. Results : According to the eight studies that met the criteria included in this review study, it was found that aerobic exercise and resistance exercise had an effect on the increase in physical fitness, muscular strength, quality of life, and range of motion in cancer survivors. Conclusion : It was confirmed that aerobic exercise and resistance exercise are safe and effective interventions that can be applied to cancer patients without side effects. A limitation of this study is that it did not examine cancer diseases in various population groups such as the elderly and children. Therefore, in future studies, studies that consider specific details such as age, gender, type of cancer, and physical differences are needed. -
Purpose : The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of the posture holding band on muscle activity of the rectus femoris, medial vastus, and vastus lateralis muscles and weight distribution during squat exercise. Methods : This study was conducted with 30 healthy adult men and women in their 20s, and all subjects were randomly assigned to the experimental group and the control group. Squat exercise was performed for 6 weeks. The experimental group received squat exercise while wearing a posture holding band, and the control group applied without wearing a posture holding band. Muscle activity of the quadriceps femoris (rectus femoris, vastus medialis, and vastus lateralis) and weight distribution (knee flexion 0 °, 30 °, 60 °, and 90 °) was measured. Results : According to the results of this study, all three muscles showed a main effect on time and group, and a significant interaction was shown only in the vastus lateralis. In addition, the value of the weight distribution difference according to the knee flexion angle did not show a main effect according to time and group at 30 ° of knee flexion, but showed an interaction. Conclusion : It was confirmed that the application of the posture holding band during squat exercise increased the muscle activity of the quadriceps muscle, and showed greater changes in the vastus lateralis muscle. In addition, it was confirmed that the difference in weight distribution was reduced in the knee flexion, and in particular, a greater change was shown in reducing the difference in weight distribution in the knee flexion of 30 °. Therefore, it is considered that the effect of the exercise can be further enhanced if the unnecessary movement of the trunk is controlled by using equipment such as a posture holding band during squat exercise.

Purpose : The purpose of this study was to determine factors that affect the quality of life (QoL) of people with diabetes. We hope to provide a basis for intervention strategies for health promotion and related research among patients with diabetes in the field of physical therapy. Methods : We selected individuals diagnosed with diabetes who were aged 19 years or higher by using data from the 2019 Korean Health Panel survey and analyzed the results of 1,527 people. The influencing factors were sex, age, household income, marital status, age, education level, subjective health status, body mass index (BMI), smoking, drinking, regular exercise, experience of depression and anxiety, suicidal thoughts, stress, and frequency of walking (days/week). Frequency analysis, descriptive statistics, independent sample t-test, one-way analysis of variance, and multiple regression analysis were performed. Results : The EQ-5D score for QoL was .87 ± .12, with pain and discomfort being the most detrimental to the QoL of people with diabetes. In terms of patients characteristics, the QoL was lower among participants who were female, older, and separated/widowed/divorced; had an education level below middle school; had a poor subjective health status; were non-smokers and drinkers; and did not walk and exercise regularly, experienced a lot of stress, and experienced depression and anxiety; and had suicidal thoughts (p<.001). Being separated/bereaved/divorced; experiencing a lot of stress, depression, and anxiety; and having suicidal thoughts were negatively associated with QoL in people with diabetes (p<.01). On the other hand, age of 65 years or younger; graduation from high school, fair or better subjective health, regular exercise and alcohol consumption, and walking (days/week) were positively associated with QoL (p<.05). Conclusion : Regarding the QoL of patients with diabetes, intervention strategies should be formulated by considering general characteristics and disease-related characteristics. Among the various factors affecting QoL, the number of walking and regular exercise were found to be the factors that improved the QoL of patients with diabetes. These results can be used as a basis for the education and management of patients with diabetes in the field of physical therapy.

Purpose : Though other Citrus spp. have reported their anti-inflammatory and antioxidative activities in previous studies, the biological activity of Kiyomi (Citrus unshiu × C. sinensis) has not been reported yet. Therefore, this study attempted to analyze the anti-inflammatory mechanisms of Kiyomi leaf ethanol extract (KLEE) in lipopolysaccharide (LPS) stimulated RAW 264.7 cells. Methods : The cytotoxic effect of KLEE in RAW 264.7 cells was determined by WST-1 assay. Bacterial endotoxin, the concentration of nitric oxide (NO) was analyzed by the Griess reaction. In addition, Western blot analysis was applied to measure the protein expression level of inducible NO synthase (iNOS). The phosphorylated status of the critical inflammatory transcription factor, nuclear factor (NF)-𝜅B, and its upstream signaling molecules, phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3K)/Akt as well as mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs), were also measured by Western blot analysis. Results : KLEE was not cytotoxic up to a concentration of 200 ㎍/㎖, and protein expression levels of iNOS and cyclooxygenase (COX)-2, enzymes that counteract NO and prostaglandin (PG) E2 production, were inhibited by KLEE treatment. The phosphorylated status of PI3K/Akt as well as MAPKs including extracellular regulated kinase (ERK), c-jun NH2kinase (JNK), and p38, were significantly attenuated by KLEE treatment in LPS stimulated RAW 264.7 cells. Moreover, one of phase II enzymes, heme oxygenase (HO)-1 which has known for its anti-inflammatory capacity, was strongly induced by KLEE treatment. Conclusion : Consequently, KLEE treatment significantly attenuated the production of NO as well as the expression levels of iNOS and COX-2 in LPS-stimulated RAW 264.7 cells. The inflammatory transcription factor, NF-𝜅B, as well as its upstream signaling molecules, PI3K/Akt and MAPKs, were also diminished by KLEE treatment with statistical significance in LPS-stimulated RAW 264.7 cells. These results suggest that KLEE might be a promising candidate for the attenuation of inflammatory disorders.

Purpose : This study sought to investigate research trends regarding joint mobilization type among patients with shoulder joint diseases. Methods : A scoping review was conducted according to the five steps outlined by Arskey and O'Malley and PRISMA-ScR. We searched six domestic databases (ScienceOn, DBpia, Riss, Kmbase, Kiss, KCI) and three international databases (CINAHL, Pubmed, Cochrane central) between 2013 and June 2023. The keyword terms used were 'joint mobilization', 'Kaltenborn', 'Maitland', 'Mulligan', and 'shoulder joint'. Results : There were a total of 44 studies that investigated the topic, and these were divided into quantitative analysis and topic analysis. In terms of publication year, the number of studies within the last five years has increased more than compared to the previous five years, with most of them being randomized clinical trials. In shoulder joint diseases, it was found that the majority of joint movement studies focused on adhesive joint cystitis and shoulder collision syndrome. The Mulligan concept was the most commonly studied type of joint motion. The dependent variables used included pain, joint function (disability), and muscle function. The visual analog scale was the most commonly used for the pain variable, followed by the numeric rating scale. For joint function and disability variables, range of motion was the most commonly used, followed by shoulder pain and disability index, and disabilities of the arm, shoulder, and hand. For muscle function, variables such as muscle tone, strength, and activity were used. Conclusion : We believe that findings of this scoping review can serve as valuable mapping data for joint mobilization research on shoulder joint diseases. Further studies including systematic reviews and meta-analyses based on these results are recommended.

Purpose : This study aimed to investigate the relationship between the characteristics of hemodialysis patients and the occurrence of sarcopenia through a comprehensive literature review. Methods : A systematic literature search was conducted to identify eligible studies in the Cochrane library, PubMed and Embase. In this review, we included all papers published since the initiative's inception and summarized results as of december 2022. Studies that investigated association between sarcopenia diagnosis and hemodialysis patients (aged≥18 years) were included. Ultimately, 16 studies met our selection criteria. The risk of bias was assessed using the Newcastle-Ottawa scale. Results : Fourteen of the sixteen studies (88 %) reported that significant association between sarcopenia diagnosis and hemodialysis patients. However, two studies reported no association between sarcopenia diagnosis and hemodialysis patients. As a factor statistically related to sarcopenia in hemodialysis patients, Mortality (6 studies, 38 %), age (5 studies, 31 %), body composition (4 studies, 25 %), physical activity (2 studies, 13 %), diabetes (2 studies, 13 %), cardiovascular abnormalities (1 studies, 6 %), nutritional status (3 studies, 19 %), and gender (3 studies, 19 %). Conclusion : Our findings highlight the necessity of developing a physical therapy program that accurately reflects the health status of hemodialysis patients. To further investigate the association between the diagnosis of sarcopenia and hemodialysis patients, it is recommended to conduct large-scale longitudinal studies using standardized diagnostic criteria and evaluation methods, as well as analyze potential risk factors. Consequently, this study emphasizes the importance and potential of developing physical therapy programs that effectively address the health consequences associated with hemodialysis. The significance of this research lies in its ability to provide valuable insights and lay the foundation for future studies focused on developing preventive and therapeutic interventions targeting muscle wasting syndrome resulting from hemodialysis. -
Purpose : This study applied general training (control group) or cranio-cervical flexor training (experimental group) using a pressure biofeedback unit along with general training for 4 weeks to secondary school teachers with moderate to severe neck pain and forward head posture. After that, we tried to compare the effects through differences in neck pain intensity (using numberical rating scale), functional performance (using neck disability index), and cranio-vertebral angle change. Methods : All 50 subjects were randomly assigned to either the "experimental group (n= 25)" or the "control group (n= 25)", and the measurements were evaluated in the same way before the intervention (baseline) and after the intervention (4 weeks). During the intervention period, the subject visited the physiotherapy center and made a reservation three times a week at a fixed time as much as possible, and each training session was thoroughly conducted under the 1:1 guidance of the therapist in charge so that the correct movement and number of times could be performed without compensatory action. Results : As a result of the homogeneity analysis on the general characteristics of the subjects, there were no significant differences between the groups in all variables (p>.05). Compared to the "control group", the "experimental group" showed significant improvement after intervention in all measured variables of neck pain intensity, functional performance, and cranial-vertebral angle (p<.05). Conclusion : For secondary school teachers with forward head accompanied by neck pain, cranio-cervical flexor training using a compression biofeedback unit is an excellent method to show superior pain reduction and functional performance improvement compared to general training alone. In addition, it can be presented as a more effective intervention method that can promote recovery of forward head posture, which is an essential element of the solution.

Purpose : This study aimed to identify the job satisfaction, organizational commitment, and turnover intention of workers at dementia care centers, and the correlations between these factors. Methods : A survey of 131 dementia care center employees was conducted. This comprised 48 questions covering respondent characteristics, organizational satisfaction, organizational commitment, and turnover intention. Results : Employees with no intention to change jobs had significantly higher job satisfaction and organizational commitment than those with job change intentions. Turnover intention was significantly correlated with both job satisfaction and organizational commitment. The higher the organizational commitment and the lower the turnover intention, the higher the job satisfaction. The higher the job satisfaction and the lower the turnover intention, the higher the organizational commitment. Analysis of the sub-components of the main variables found The lower the work environment, compensation, and sense of belonging to the organization, the higher the turnover intention. Conclusion : Regular educational programs are needed to improve the expertise of workers at the dementia care center, and opportunities for employees to communicate their needs should be maximized. In addition, higher salaries will attract more able and willing employees, reduce turnover, and provide and a sense of of belonging to the organization. Attention to the proper distribution of work and recruitment of appropriate human resources will further improve the working environment. If the job satisfaction and organizational commitment of workers at the dementia care center are increased and the number of employees intending to change jobs is reduced, the length of employee service will increase and contribute to improved care and service quality for dementia patients. -
Purpose : The purpose of this study was to compare changes of salivary flow rate, salivary buffering capacity, and S. mutans after using a mouthwash containing essential oil or probiotics widely used as oral lactic acid bacteria in the oral environment. Methods : Fifty-three healthy adults aged 20 years or older voluntarily participated in this study after they were informed of the purpose of this study. Subjects were divided into a group treated with probiotics (L. reuteri) and a group treated with mouthwash containing essential oil. To evaluate changes in the oral environment, salivary flow rate, salivary buffering capacity, and S. mutans test were performed at baseline and 4 weeks later. Unstimulated and stimulated salivary flow samples were collected for 5 minutes and results were recorded in ml per minute. Salivary buffering capacity was divided into scores of 1 (low), 2 (moderate) and 3 (high) according to the color of the strip. The amount of S. mutans was classified as scores of 0, 1, 2, and 3 according to the decision table. Data collected in this study were analyzed at the 95 % significance level using the SPSS Version 23.0 program. Results : Both the unstimulated salivary flow rate and the stimulated salivary flow rate increased statistically after the intervention compared to those before intervention in the probiotics group. However, there was no statistically significant difference between the probiotics group and the mouthwash group. Salivary buffering capacity and S. mutans results showed no statistically significant differences between the probiotics group and the mouthwash group either. The salivary buffering capacity and the salivary flow rate showed a positive correlation. Conclusion : To improve the oral environment, such as salivary flow rate and salivary buffering capacity, an optimal product can be selected in consideration of individual preference and cost-effectiveness.
