VRI(Vulnerability-Resilience Index), which is defined as a function of 3 variables: climate exposure, sensitivity, and adaptive capacity, has been quantified for the case of Typhoon which is one of the extreme weathers that will become more serious as climate change proceeds. Because VRI is only indicating the relative importance of vulnerability between regions, the VRI quantification is prerequisite for the effective adaptation policy for climate in Korea. For this purpose, damage statistics such as amount of damage, occurrence frequency, and major damaged districts caused by Typhoon over the past 20 years, has been employed. According to the VRI definition, we first calculated VRI over every district in the case of both with and without weighting factors of climate exposure proxy variables. For the quantitative estimation of weighting factors, we calculated correlation coefficients (R) for each of the proxy variables against damage statistics of Typhoon, and then used R as weighting factors of proxy variables. The results without applying weighting factors indicates some biases between VRI and damage statistics in some regions, but most of biases has been improved by applying weighting factors. Finally, due to the relations between VRI and damage statistics, we are able to quantify VRI expressed as a unit of KRW, showing that VRI=1 is approximately corresponding to 500 hundred million KRW. This methodology of VRI quantification employed in this study, can be also practically applied to the number of future climate scenario studies over Korea.

The shape of $7\times7$ pin-fins heat sink is optimized numerically to obtain the minimum pressure drop and thermal resistance. In this study, the fin height (h), fin width (w), and fan-to-heat sink distance (c) are chosen as the design variables and the pressure drop $({\Delta}P)$ and thermal resistance $(\theta_j)$ are adopted as the objective functions. To obtain the optimum design values, we used the finite volume method for calculating the objective functions, the BFGS method for solving the unconstrained non-linear optimization problem, and the weighting method for predicting the multi-objective problem. The results show that the optimum design variables for the weighting coefficient of 0.5 are as follows: W=4.653 mm, h=59.215mm, and c=2.667mm. The objective functions corresponding to the optimal design are calculated as ${\Delta}P=6.82$ Pa and $(\theta_j)=0.56K/W$. The Pareto solutions are also presented for various weighting coefficients and they will offer very useful data to design the pin-fins heat sink.

The cost function consists of the weighting functions concerning the structural responses to be controlled and the controller capability. Therefore, the control efficiency depends on the characteristics of the weighting functions. The objective of this paper is the comparative study of the time domain control strategies of LQR and LQG and the frequency domain strategy of H₂ by setting the equivalent weighting functions to the all control strategies. As a result of analysis, LQR strategy is found to be more efficient than other strategies in terms of the response reduction. but the control force is found to be a little highter. As LQG can compensate the limitation of LQR that all state variables should be identified, LQG is more acceptable algorithm than LQR. Furthermore LQG shows a good performance both in the response reduction and the control force. Finally H₂ algorithm is employed to illustrate the importance of weighting filters considering the frequency characteristics of the response and the controller. It Is shown that the H₂ algorithm is found to be the most effective one for the response control with a little control force having a low frequency band.
A numerical procedure for optimizing the shape of three-dimensional channel with V-shaped ribs extruded on both walls has been carried out to enhance the turbulent heat transfer. The response surface based optimization is used as an optimization technique with Reynolds-averaged Wavier-stoked analysis. Shear stress transport (SST) turbulence model is used as a turbulence closure. Computational results for average heat transfer rate show good agreements with experimental data. The objective function is defined as a linear combination of heat transfer and friction loss-related terms with a weighting factor. Three dimensionless variables such as, rib pitch-to-rib height ratio, rib height-to-channel height ratio, and the attack angle of the rib are chosen as design variables. Nineteen training points obtained by D-optimal designs for three design variables construct a reliable response surface. In the sensitivity analysis, it is found that the objective function is most sensitive to the ratio of rib height-to-channel height ratio. And, optimal values of design variables have been obtained in a range of the weighting factor.

In this paper, we propose a new data-mining-based methodology for military occupational specialty assignment. The proposed methodology consists of two phases, feature selection and man-power assignment. In the first phase, the k-means partitioning algorithm and the optimal variable weighting algorithm are used to determine attribute weights. We address limitations of the optimal variable weighting algorithm and suggest a quadratic programming model that can handle categorical variables and non-contributory trivial variables. In the second phase, we present an integer programming model to deal with a man-power assignment problem. In the model, constraints on demand-supply requirements and training capacity are considered. Moreover, the attribute weights obtained in the first phase for each specialty are used to measure dissimilarity. Results of a computational experiment using real-world data are provided along with some analysis.

Weighting adjustment is a method of improving the efficiency of the estimator by incorporating auxiliary variables at the estimation stage. One commonly used method of weighting adjustment is the poststratification, which is a special case of regression estimation but is relatively feasible in terms of actual implementation. If too many auxiliary variables are used in the poststratification, the bias of the resulting point estimator is no longer negligible and the final weights may have extreme weights. In this study, we propose a method of weight ing adjustment that compromises the efficiency and the bias of the point estimator. A limited simulation study is also presented.
This study presents a numerical procedure to optimize the shape of a staggered dimpled surface to enhance the turbulent heat transfer in a rectangular channel. A optimization technique based on neural network is used with Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stakes analysis of the fluid flow and heat transfer with Shear Stress Transport turbulence model. The dimple depth-to-dimple print diameter ratio, channel height-to-dimple print diameter ratio, and dimple print diameter-to-pitch ratio are chosen as design variables. The objective function is defined as a linear combination of terms related to heat transfer and friction loss with a weighting factor. Latin Hypercube Sampling is used to determine the training points as a mean of the Design of Experiment. Optimal values of the design variables were obtained in a range of the weighting factor.
This work presents a numerical procedure to optimize the elliptic-shaped pin fin arrays to enhance turbulent heat transfer. The response surface method is used as an optimization technique with Reynolds-averaged Navier Stokes analysis of flow and heat transfer. Shear stress transport (SST) turbulence model is used as a turbulence closure. Computational results for average heat transfer rate show a reasonable agreement with the experimental data. Four variables including major axis length, minor axis length, pitch and the pin fin length nondimensionalized by duct height are chosen as design variables. The objective function is defined as a linear combination of heat transfer and friction-loss related terms with weighting factor. D-optimal design is used to reduce the data points, and, with only 28 points, reliable response surface is obtained. Optimum shapes of the pin-fin arrays have been obtained in the range from 0.0 to 0.1 of weighting factor.

A controller and sensor fault tolerant system jot a steam generator is designed with fuzzy logic. A structure of the : proposed fault tolerant redundant system is composed of a supervisor and two fuzzy weighting modulators. A supervisor alternatively checks a controlled and a sensor induced performances to identify Which Part, a controller or a sensor, is faulty. In order to analyze controller induced performance both an error and a charge in error of the system output an chosen as fuzzy variables. The fuzzy logic jot a sensor induced performance uses two variables : a deviation between two sensor outputs and its frequency, Fuzzy weighting modulator generates an output signal compensated for faulty input signal. Simulations show that the : proposed fault tolerant control scheme jot a steam generator regulates welt water level by suppressing fault effect of either controllers or sensors. Therefore through duplicating sensors and controllers with the proposed fault tolerant scheme, both a reliability of a steam generator control and sensor system and that of a power plant increase even mote.
It is usual to prioritize the blocks to rearrange residential environment by the responsible officer's intuition or a few specialist's experienced knowledge. The aim of this research was to evaluate rebuilding priority in the context of spatially weighted framework integrating resident's view. The spatial weighting for the variables related to evaluation of dwelling environment was derived from AHP (Analytic Hierarchy Process) approach through the analysis of resident's view. An empirical study for a case study site has been conducted to confirm the validity for the spatial weighting. The spatial weighting has frequently influenced in changing the rebuilding priority and was identified as the important predictor for the improvement sites of dwelling environment. The spatially weighted analysis made it possible to identify area-wide patterns of rebuilding priority area subject to many different type of thematic variables, which cannot be acquired by traditional field sampling. The spatially weighting derived by integrating various formats of spatial data into a comprehensive GIS database in particular, was ideally suited to displaying the objective distribution patterns for rebuilding priority. The result of this study would play a crucial role in dealing with public complaints for rebuilding priority since it could provide objective evidences in accordance with spatial weighting.
