This Study was carried out to find out regional differences about dietary life and factors associated with meal of school children and adolescents between urban and rural area. Forty students from each of the nationwide 51 schools of three different levels(elementary, middle and high school) were surveyed by self-developed questionnaires. Total of 1,886 questionnaires (1,243 from urban and 681 from rural) were collected and distribution of subjects was 544 from elementary school, 661 from middle school, and 681 from high school. The results were summarized as follows. BMI and degree of satisfaction on body weight of elementary and middle school subjects were not significantly different between urban and rural area. But there were significant regional differences in $BMI(urban\;21.2{\pm}3.0,\;rural\;20.5{\pm}2.8,\;p<0.05)$ and degree of satisfaction on body weight of high school subjects(p<0.001). Elementary(p<0.01) and middle school(p<0.05) subjects in urban area had exercised more frequently than those in rural area. Regularity of having breakfast was not significantly different between urban and rural area at each of three different levels of school. Most subjects(urban 92.2%, rural 92.1%) had lunch regularly by virtue of school lunch service. Regularity of having dinner of elementary(p<0.01) and high school subjects (p<0.01) was significantly different between urban and rural area. Reason for skipping dinner of high school subjects was significantly different between urban and rural area (p<0.05). The most delicious meal was dinner for 51.8% of the urban high school subjects and lunch for 51.7% of the rural subjects. Only one third had intention of participating in school breakfast program regardless of region and levels of school. The findings suggested that nutrition education programs for school children and adolescents include different strategy according to region and levels of schools.
This study was attempted to evaluate the mental health of high school students in rural and urban community. For the above purpose the Minesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory(MMPI) was conducted for the total 868 students including 213 high school bodys and 209 high school girls in rural community, and 228 high school boys and 218 high school girls in urban community. The results are summarized as follows: 1. Scores of lie, hypochondriasis and social introversion scale were statiatically higher in rural high school boys than urban high school boys, but the scores of psychopathic deviate and hypomania scale were on the contrary. 2. Rural high school girls showed statistically higher scores in depression, paranoia, psychasthenia and schizophrenia scale than urban high school girls did. 3. Scores of validity, correction, hysteria and masculinity-femininity scale were not different between rural and urban community in both of high school boys and high school girls.
Current, integrated schools are small schools in rural areas and old towns with declining population, or special purpose middle and high schools. And new residential districts in urban areas including Seoul have also been established in integrated schools. In particular, the number of school of central investment evaluation for integrated schools in urban areas is increasing. In this way, integrated schools, which have been mostly implemented in small rural areas, are being introduced as new ways to establish schools in urban housing development areas where the number of students is small or the number of students is difficult to predict. However, many studies of integrated school have been limited to appropriate scaling of small schools in rural areas, school management methods, and satisfaction surveys. The study of integrated school in urban areas is also focused on the study of architectural planning. In addition, there were limitations in suggesting the comprehensive establishment plan of schools or approaching urban planning when developing housing complexes. The purpose of this study is to suggest efficient establishment plan of integrated school in the development of urban housing complexes.
The purpose of this study was to examine the relation of elementary school children's stress and coping behavior in urban and rural areas. The subject included 286 children selected from 4 elementary schools in urban and rural areas. The instruments included the children's stress index and coping behavior questionnaire of the elementary school children. The statistics used from this data were t-test, one-way ANOVA(Duncan test), correlation analysis and multiple regression analysis. This study showed significant differences between urban and rural children's stress in school attainment domain, teacher-school domain, home environment domain and surroundings domain. And urban and rural children was different in active, passive/avoidant and aggressive coping behavior. The stress of urban's children was influenced significantly by the grade and school attainment variales, and the rural children's stress was influenced significantly by the gender variable. The coping behavior of urban's children was influenced by the gender, grade and school attainment variables, and also the rural children's coping behavior was influenced by the above variables. Correlation analysis indicated that children's stress and aggressive coping behavior were relative positive high correlation in urban areas, and children's stress and passive/avoidant coping behavior were positive high correlation in rural areas. It was also found that school attainment, aggressive coping behavior and passive/avoidant coping behavior were significant predictors of urban children's stress, and gender, passive/avoidant coping behavior and aggressive coping behavior were significant predictors of rural children's stress.
The purpose of the study is to examine the differences between rural and urban in the factors and the level of stress in adolescent, inner control and communication with parents. Also, It is to research the influence of environmental variables, inner control and communication with parents on adolescent's stress in sides of rural and urban. For the data set, academic high school students in second grade in a town for rural and Su-Seung gu, Dal-Sugu, chung gu in Dae-gu for urban were chosen. The data were analyzed with the frequency, percentage, factor analysis Mean, S.D, reliability, t-test, regression in use of Spss PC+ Program. The main results are as follow. First, for rural students, stress level is displayed studies, future0affair, life-attitude, companions, self-assurance and home life in order by lower sphere. For urban students, it is displayed future-affair, studies, life-attitude, companions, self-assurance and home life in order by lower shpere. In case of rural "I don't know effective study method" is highly displayed by factors. In case of urban. "I am tired of a competitive life" is highly displayed. The mean of stress level is 3.22 for rural and 3.07 for urban. The differences between rural and urban are showed in self-assurance, studies and companions. Finally when we see the stress generally the stress level is higher in rural high school students than in urban high school students. Second, rural students are lower displayed than urban students in inner control and communication with parents. There is no difference urban students in inner control and communication with parents. There is no difference in communication with a mother. third, influential variables on stress level are inner control, communication with parents, satisfaction with companions and school life as environmental variables in sides of rural and urban. Physical condition is added for rural and sex for urban Finally we get the result that stress level is high in low inner control, poor communication with parents, bad companions and unsatisfied school life for both rural and urban. Bad physical condition for rural and female for urban are added.
The purpose of this study was to investigate children's nutrient intakes by school lunch. Evaluation of nutrient intakes by school lunch for three days was conducted with 86 children in urban and 64 children in rural of Jeonbuk area. The results of this study were as follows. 1) With respect to amounts of provided nutrients in school lunch, CPF (carbohydrate : protein : fat) energy ratio was 48.6 : 19.7 : 31.6 in urban and was 46.7 : 20.5 : 32.7 in rural. Compared to 1/3 RDA (RDA) of children for 10-12 years, folic acid and zinc were provided below 50 % of RDA. Protein, fat, phosphorus, vitamin $B_1$, vitamin $B_2$, niacin, vitamin C and vitamin E were provided above 125 % of RDA. There were no differences in amounts of provided nutrients-except calcium, vitamin A, vitamin $B_6$, folic acid and zinc-between urban and rural. 2) With respect to amounts of nutrient intakes, CPF energy ratio was 51.1 : 17.4 : 31.5 in urban and 47.5 : 19.7 : 32.7 in rural. Compared to RDA, folic and zinc were below 50 % of RDA. Iron and vitamin $B_6$ were below 75 % of RDA. Protein, fat, phosphorus and vitamin E were above 125 % of RDA. There were significant differences in nutrient intakes between urban and rural. The children in rural showed higher levels of nutrient intakes-energy, carbohydrate, protein, fat, calcium, phosphorus, iron, zinc, vitamins and folic acid-compared to those of children in urban. These results suggest that programs are needed for providing adequate nutrient intakes for children in school lunch and for improving nutrient intakes of children in urban.
In recent years, schools in the urban areas are also showing their interest in the integrated school and considering adapting the actual operation method. That is why decline of the school-age population is not limited to rural areas any more, and decreasing number of students in urban schools is raised as a social issue to reconsider the continuation of schools. To solve the problems of the small-scale schools in the urban area, the integrated school is being considered as an alternative. Furthermore, the newly built schools in the urban development areas are also planned as the integrated school. Accordingly, the purpose of this study is to examine the cases of integrated schools in urban area of developed countries and to analyze their architectural planning considerations in practice.
The purposes of this study were to quantify and compare the kind and amount of solid waste generated in two school foodservice operations located in urban and rural areas. A waste stream analysis was conducted to quantify and characterize the kind of waste in the production and service parts of each operation. The SPSS 10.0 for window was used for data analysis. Non-parametric test (Mann-Whitney) was adopted to determine if significant differences exist in amounts of waste generated in the urban school and the rural school. An average of 415 meals, including 43 adult meals, were served daily in the urban school, while an average of 177 meals, including 24 adult meals, were served daily in the rural school. Food waste generated in the production part in the urban school composed approximately 87% and 45%, while that in the rural school composed 71% and 28% by weight and volume, respectively. Waste per meal was not significantly different between the urban school and the rural school in the production part except the cardboard waste. The total waste per meal at lunch was 154g or 465m1 in the urban school and 51g or 334m1 in the rural school. Students in the urban school discarded significantly more food waste and milk than students in the rural school did. The research results suggest that school foodservice dietitians should evaluate the acceptability of menu items based on food waste per meal, and assess the feasibility of implementing a plan for recycling packaging waste and composting organic waste.
The purpose of this study was to compare the degree of understanding about school foodservice management and environmentally friendly agricultural products between urban and rural elementary school children's mothers. The subjects were 280 elementary school children's mothers who lived in Gunsan city and the nearby countryside. The results are summarized as follows. The mothers in urban schools were higher on the degree of participation (p < 0.01) and interest (p < 0.01), but were lower on the degree of satisfaction (p < 0.001) for school foodservice than rural ones. The best improvement of school foodservice management was improving food tastes and qualities of the foodstuffs in urban schools and sanitation at the service area in the rural schools (p < 0.001). The school foodservice program contributed to cure the unbalanced diets and developing of bodies and minds; there was no difference of urban and rural schools. But eating habits in rural schools were more improved than urban schools (p < 0.001). The primary reason for using environmentally friendly agricultural products was to improve their health and in securing safe foods, there was no difference of urban and rural schools, but generating the farmer's income from the products in rural schools was higher than urban schools (p < 0.001). There are conflicting views between urban and rural schools for the additional costs brought by using the environmentally friendly agricultural products (p < 0.001). The order of preference on using environmentally friendly agricultural products was rice and various grains, vegetables, fruits, livestock, seasoning, etc. In conclusion, our central and local governments should change their roles in financially positive ways and reflect the issues in making the policy effective. Responsible administrators of school food suppliers run the system more faithfully with the above government support.
