We report our research on aluminum mirror optics for future infrared astronomical satellites. For space infrared missions, cooling the whole instrument is crucial to suppress the infrared background and detector noise. In this aspect, aluminum is appropriate for cryogenic optics, because the same material can be used for the whole structure of the instrument including optical components thanks to its excellent machinability, which helps to mitigate optical misalignment at low temperatures. We have fabricated aluminum mirrors with ultra-precision machining and measured the wave front errors (WFEs) of the mirrors with a Fizeau interferometer. Based on the power spectral densities of the WFEs, we confirmed that the surface accuracy of all the mirrors satisfied the requirements for the SPICA Coronagraph Instrument. We then integrated the mirrors into an optical system, and examined the image quality of the system with an optical laser. As a result, the total WFE is estimated to be 33 nm (rms) from the Strehl ratio. This is consistent with the WFEs estimated from the measurement of the individual mirrors.
The present pesticide application technology widely used with a power sprayer in Korea is assessed as the problem awaiting solution in the point of view of its ineffectiveness, inefficiency, and environmental contamination. As one approach to get rid of these problems, the boom spraying with ultra-low volume and precision application technology has been recommended. The study was undertaken to investigate plants damages incurred by the self-propelled boom-sprayer vehicle, to develop the design criteria of vehicle wheel, and to compare plant damages caused by the front wheel steering vehicle, the 4-wheel drive vehicle and the articulated vehicle, by the computer simulation. The experiment showed that the amount of damaged plants incurred by the self-propelled boom sprayer were about 0.29% in average in the field size of 100m$\times$50m(0.5ha), about 60~80% of which recovering while growing. The recommandable wheel size was analyzed to be 70~100cm in diameter, 8~15cm in width from the vehicle-plant-soil relationship. The simulation on damaged plants anticipated to be incurred by various steering vehicles showed that the smaller the turning radius, the lesser the damaged plants within its range of 3~5m. Average plant damage rate by the front wheel steering vehicle, the 4-wheel drive vehicle and articulated vehicle was relatively assessed to be 2 : 1.8 : 1.
Dynamic response analysis of offshore triceratops with stiffened buoyant legs under impact and non-impact waves is presented. Triceratops is relatively new-generation complaint platform being explored in the recent past for its suitability in ultra-deep waters. Buoyant legs support the deck through ball joints, which partially isolate the deck by not transferring rotation from legs to the deck. Buoyant legs are interconnected using equally spaced stiffeners, inducing more integral action in dispersing the encountered wave loads. Two typical nonlinear waves under very high sea state are used to simulate impact and non-impact waves. Parameters of JONSWAP spectrum are chosen to produce waves with high vertical and horizontal asymmetries. Impact waves are simulated by steep, front asymmetric waves while non-impact waves are simulated using Stokes nonlinear irregular waves. Based on the numerical analyses presented, it is seen that the platform experiences both steady state (springing) and transient response (ringing) of high amplitudes. Response of the deck shows significant reduction in rotational degrees-of-freedom due to isolation offered by ball joints. Weak-asymmetric waves, resulting in non-impact waves cause steady state response. Beat phenomenon is noticed in almost all degrees-of-freedom but values in sway, roll and yaw are considerably low as angle of incidence is zero degrees. Impact waves cause response in higher frequencies; bursting nature of pitch response is a clear manifestation of the effect of impact waves on buoyant legs. Non-impact waves cause response similar to that of a beating phenomenon in all active degrees-of-freedom, which otherwise would not be present under normal loading. Power spectral density plots show energy content of response for a wide bandwidth of frequencies, indicating an alarming behaviour apart from being highly nonlinear. Heave, being one of the stiff degrees-of-freedom is triggered under non-impact waves, which resulted in tether tension variation under non-impact waves as well. Reduced deck response aids functional requirements of triceratops even under impact and non-impact waves. Stiffened group of buoyant legs enable a monolithic behaviour, enhancing stiffness in vertical plane.

Data protection of removable storage devices is an important issue in information security. Unfortunately, most existing data protection mechanisms are aimed at protecting computer platform which is not suitable for ultra-low-power devices. To protect the flash disk appropriately and efficiently, we propose a trust based USB flash disk, named UTrustDisk. The data protection technologies in UTrustDisk include data authentication protocol, data confidentiality protection and data leakage prevention. Usually, the data integrity protection scheme is the bottleneck in the whole system and we accelerate it by WH universal hash function and speculative caching. The speculative caching will cache the potential hot chunks for reducing the memory bandwidth pollution. We adopt the symmetric encryption algorithm to protect data confidentiality. Before mounting the UTrustDisk, we will run a trusted virtual domain based lightweight virtual machine for preventing information leakage. Besides, we prove formally that UTrustDisk can prevent sensitive data from leaking out. Experimental results show that our scheme's average writing throughput is 44.8% higher than that of NH scheme, and 316% higher than that of SHA-1 scheme. And the success rate of speculative caching mechanism is up to 94.5% since the access pattern is usually sequential.
The present article briefly overviews the plan for a new project on joint technology for HTS wires/cables and describes the development plan for the world's highest field NMR magnet, which is a major development item in the project. For full-fledged social implementation of superconducting devices, high temperature superconducting (HTS) wire is a key technology since they can be cooled by liquid nitrogen and they can generate a super-high magnetic field of >>24 T at liquid helium temperatures. However, one of the major drawbacks of the HTS wires is their availability only in short lengths of a single piece of wire. This necessitates a number of joints being installed in superconducting devices, resulting in a difficult manufacturing process and a large joint resistance. In Japan, a large-scale project has commenced, including two technical demonstration items: (i) Development of superconducting joints between HTS wires, which are used in the world's highest field 1.3 GHz (30.5 T) NMR magnet in persistent current mode; the joints performance is evaluated based on NMR spectra for proteins. (ii) Development of ultra-low resistive joints between DC superconducting feeder cables for railway systems. The project starts a new initiative of next generation super-high field NMR development as well as that of realization of better superconducting power cables.
This paper shortly reviews our recent work on filled skutterudites, which are considered to be one of the most promising thermoelectric (TE) materials due to their excellent power factors and relatively low thermal conductivities. The filled skutterudite system also provides a platform for studying void filling physics/chemistry in compounds with intrinsic lattice voids. By using ab initio calculations and thermodynamic analysis, our group has made progresses in understanding the filling fraction limit (FFL) for single fillers in $CoSb_3$, and ultra-high FFLs in a few alkali-metal-filled $CoSb_3$ have been predicted and then been confirmed experimentally. FFLs in multiple-element-filled $CoSb_3$ are also investigated and anonymous filling behavior is found in a few specific systems. The calculated and measured FFLs, in both single and multiple-filled $CoSb_3$ systems, show good accordance so far. The thermal transport properties can be understood qualitatively by a phonon resonance scattering model, and it seems that a scaling rule may exist between the lattice thermal resistivity and the resonance frequency of filler atoms in filled system. Even though a few things become clear now, there are still many unsolved issues that call for further work.
In this paper, we propose a parallel LDPCA encoding method for fast transform-domain Wyner-Ziv video encoding which is suitable in an ultra fast and low power video encoding. The conventional transform-domain Wyner-Ziv video encoding performs LDPCA channel coding of quantized transform coefficients in bitplane-serial fashion, which takes about 60% of total encoding time, and this computational complexity becomes severer as the bitrate increases. The proposed method binds several bitplanes into one packed message and carries out the LDPCA encoding in parallel. The proposed LDPCA encoding method improves the encoding speed by 8 ~ 55 times. In the experiment, the proposed Wyner-Ziv encoder can encode 700 ~ 2,300 QCIF size frames per second with GOP=64. The method can be applied to the pixel-domain Wyner-Ziv encoder using LDPCA, and has a wide scope of application.

The Quantum-dot Cellular Automata (QCA) can be considered as a candidate for the next generation digital logic implementation technology due to their small feature sizes and ultra low power consumption. Up to now, several designs using Uh technology have been proposed. However, we found not all of the designs function properly. Furthermore, no general design guidelines have been proposed so far. A straightforward extension of a simple functional design pattern may fail. This makes designing a large scale circuits using QCA technology an extremely time-consuming process. In this paper, we show several critical vulnerabilities related to unbalanced input paths to QCA gates and sneak noise paths in QCA interconnect structures. In order to make up the vulnerabilities, a disciplinary guideline will be proposed. Also, we present a fast adder which has been designed by the discipline, and verified to be functional by the simulation.

In this paper an octave tuning voltage controlled oscillator which is used in set-top TV tuner was designed. Oscillation frequency range is 0.9 GHz~2.2 GHz with 1.3 GHz bandwidth. By using 4 varactor diodes in base and emitter of transistor, wide-band tuning, sweep linearity and low phase noise could be achieved. Designed VCO requires a tuning voltage of 0 V ~ 20 V and DC consumption of 10 V and 15 mA. Designed VCO exhibits an output power of 5.3 dBm $\pm$1.1 dB and a phase noise below -94.8 dBc/Hz @ 10 kHz over the entire frequency range. The sweep linearity shows 65 MHz/V with a deviation of $\pm$10 MHz.

UWB radio systems have drawn attention during the last few years. These systems are the core technique for ubiquitous home and enable to co-exist with other narrow band systems over the same frequency without interfering them. But UWB signals have a very low power per pulse, so they are affected by strong narrow band interferences. Specially, IEEE 802.11a systems which operate around 5GHz overlap the band of UWB signals and they will interfere with UWB systems significantly. In this paper, we propose a novel narrow band interference suppression method based on singular value decomposition(SVD) algorithm for DS-UWB in IEEE 802.15.4a channel model. The proposed method is very effective and robust for both a single user DS-UWB system and a multiuser DS-UWB system to reduce the narrow band interference.
