당뇨병 캠프의 자가간호 교육이 제1형 당뇨병 아동의 당뇨관리행위, 당뇨지식 및 당뇨관리 자아효능감에 미치는 영향 (Effect of Self-care Education at a Diabetes Camp on Diabetes Management Behaviors, Knowledge and Self-efficacy in Children with Type 1 Diabetes)

  • 목적 본 연구는 당뇨병 캠프에 참여한 1형 당뇨병 아동 및 청소년을 대상으로 자가간호 교육을 제공하고, 이 교육이 아동의 당뇨관리행위, 당뇨지식 그리고 당뇨관리 자아효능감에 미치는 효과를 파악하기 위함이다. 방법 본 연구는 단편적 서술연구로 인천지역 1개 대학병원에서 시행되었고, 대상자는 당뇨병 캠프에 참여한 제1형 당뇨병을 가진 만 8세-19세의 어린이 및 청소년을 편의추출 하였다. 인구사회학적 변수와 임상적 변수를 포함하여 당뇨관리행위, 당뇨지식 그리고 당뇨관리 자아효능감을 자가보고 방법을 이용하여 수집하였다. 결과 연구에 참가한 대상자들은 15명으로 평균 만 12 (${\pm}2.3$)세였고 여자가 53.3%로 약간 많았으며, 평균 HbA1c는 8.8 (${\pm}2.0$)%였다. 자가간호 교육 후, 당뇨관리행위($.56{\pm}.13$ vs $.60{\pm}.17$, p =.101)와 당뇨지식($70.2{\pm}15.7$ vs $71.6{\pm}14.7$, p =.606)은 점수가 향상하였고, 당뇨관리 자아효능감($6.2{\pm}2.1$ vs $6.1{\pm}2.6$, p =.883)은 감소하였으나 모두 통계적으로 유의하지는 못하였다. 또한, 자가간호 교육 후 향상된 당뇨관련 행위점수와 인구사회학적, 임상적, 사회 심리적 변수와의 상관관계를 탐색해 본 결과 총점과 통계적으로 유의한 상관관계를 보인 변수는 없었다. 결론 당뇨병 캠프 안에서 자가간호 교육 제공은 제1형 당뇨병 아동 및 청소년의 당뇨에게 당뇨관리행위, 당뇨지식 및 당뇨관리 자아효능감의 일부 영역을 향상시켰다. 앞으로 이러한 아동들의 다양한 건강 요구를 반영하면서, 집중적이고 지속적인 교육을 제공할 수 있는 다양한 형태의 교육이 개발되어야 한다.

물체 크기와 뻗기 거리가 상지 움직임에 미치는 영향 (The Effects of Object Size and Reaching Distance on Upper Extremity Movement)

  • 목적 : 정상인을 대상으로 팔뻗기 수행 시 물체 크기와 뻗기 거리가 상지의 운동형상학적 요소에 미치는 영향을 알아보고자 하였다. 연구 방법 : 대상자는 부산시 D대학교에 재학 중인 대학생 30명이며 측정 도구는 삼차원 동작 분석기인 CMS-70P(Zebris Medizintechnik Gmbh, Germany)를 사용하였다. 과제는 6가지 조건이다. 팔뻗기 수행시 물체 크기(2cm, 10cm)와 뻗기 거리(15%, 37.5%, 60%)의 변화에 따른 움직임의 평균 속도, 평균 가속도, 최대 속도, 속도의 정점수를 측정하였다. 대상자의 일반적 특성은 기술통계를 사용하였다. 두 가지 물체 크기에서 세 가지 뻗기 거리로 팔뻗기 과제를 수행했을 때 변수를 비교하기 위해 일원분산분석(One-way ANOVA measure)으로 분석하였고, 사후검정은 Tukey 검정을 실시하였다. 또한 세 가지 뻗기 거리에서 두 가지 물체 크기에 따른 운동형상학적 차이를 분석하기 위해서 독립 t검정(Independent t-test)을 사용하였다. 팔뻗기 거리(15%, 37.5%, 60%)와 물체 크기(2cm, 10cm)에 따른 상호작용효과를 확인하기 위해 이원분산분석(3×2 Two-way ANOVA measure)을 실시하였다. 통계적 유의수준 α는 .05로 설정하였다. 결과 : 정상인은 물체 크기와 뻗기 거리의 변화에 따라 상지 움직임에 유의한 차이가 있었다. 물체 크기가 동일한 경우 뻗기 거리가 길어질수록 평균 속도, 최대속도가 증가하였고, 속도의 정점 수는 감소하였다. 뻗기 거리가 동일한 경우 물체 크기가 커질수록 평균 속도, 최대 속도가 증가하였고 속도의 정점 수는 감소하였다. 물체 크기와 뻗기 거리의 변화는 평균 가속도에 영향을 미치지 않았으며 유의한 차이가 없었다. 결론 : 과제를 시간적, 공간적 특성으로 제한하는 것은 대상자의 상지 움직임에도 영향을 미치게 된다. 따라서 본 연구의 결과를 토대로 신경학적 기능수준에 따라 세밀하게 등급화된 과제제공에 도움이 될 것으로 사료된다.

사용자의 신체적 특징과 뇌파 집중 지수를 이용한 가상 모니터 개념의 NUI/NUX (NUI/NUX of the Virtual Monitor Concept using the Concentration Indicator and the User's Physical Features)

  • Human-Computer Interaction(HCI)에 대한 관심도가 높이지면서, HCI에 대한 연구도 활발히 진행되고 있다. 이와 더불어 사용자의 몸짓이나 음성을 이용하는 Natural User Interface/Natural User eXperience(NUI/NUX)에 대한 연구도 활발히 진행되고 있다. NUI/NUX의 경우, 제스처 인식이나 음성 인식 등의 인식 알고리즘이 필요하다. 하지만 이러한 인식 알고리즘은 전처리, 정규화, 특징 추출과 같은 단계를 거쳐야하기 때문에 구현이 복잡하고, 트레이닝에 많은 시간을 투자해야 한다는 단점이 있다. 최근에는 NUI/NUX 개발 도구로 Microsoft 사의 Kinect가 개발되어 개발자와 일반인들에게 많은 관심을 받고 있고, 이를 이용한 다양한 연구가 진행 중에 있다. 본 저자들의 이전 연구에서도 사용자의 신체적 특징을 이용하여 뛰어난 직관성을 가진 핸드 마우스를 구현하였다. 하지만 마우스의 움직임이 부자연스럽고 정확도가 낮아 사용자가 사용하기 다소 어려웠다는 단점이 있다. 본 연구에서는 Kinect를 통해 사용자의 신체적 특징을 실시간으로 추출하고, 이를 이용해 가상 모니터라는 새로운 개념을 추가한 핸드 마우스 인터페이스를 설계하고 구현하였다. 가상 모니터는 사용자의 손으로 마우스를 제어할 수 있는 가상의 공간을 의미한다. 이를 통해 가상 모니터 상의 손의 좌표를 실제 모니터 상의 좌표로 정확하게 매핑(mapping)이 가능하다. 가상 모니터를 사용함으로써 이전 연구의 장점인 직관성을 유지하고, 단점인 정확도를 높일 수 있다. 추가적으로 뇌파 집중 지표를 이용해 사용자의 불필요한 행동을 인식하여 핸드 마우스 인터페이스의 정확도를 높였다. 제안하는 핸드 마우스의 직관성과 정확성을 평가하기 위하여 10대부터 50대까지 50명에게 실험을 하였다. 직관성 실험 결과로 84%가 1분 이내에 사용방법을 터득하였다. 또한 동일한 피실험자에게 일반적인 마우스 기능(드래그, 클릭, 더블클릭)에 대해 정확성 실험을 한 결과로 드래그 80.9%, 클릭 80%, 더블 클릭 76.7%의 정확성을 보였다. 실험 결과를 통해 제안하는 핸드 마우스 인터페이스의 직관성과 정확성을 확인하였으며, 미래에 손으로 시스템이나 소프트웨어를 제어하는 인터페이스의 좋은 예시가 될 것으로 기대된다.

영재와 평재 고등학생의 IT 역량에 대한 인식 (Perceptions of Information Technology Competencies among Gifted and Non-gifted High School Students)

  • 본 연구에서는 영재와 평재 고등학생들이 IT 역량을 어떻게 인식하고 있는지에 대해 비교해 보고자 하였다. 이를 위해 영재학교 2개교와 IT 특성화 고등학교 1개교 그리고 공업고등학교 1개교, 총 370명을 대상으로 표집 하였으며, 이들을 대상으로 IT 기업 인재 채용 시에 중요하게 고려되는 요인, IT 역량 향상을 위해 필요한 교과목과 이를 위한 효과적인 교육방법, IT 핵심역량에 대한 생각에 대해 응답하도록 하였다. 이 중 351명을 최종 분석 대상으로 선정하여 분석한 결과, 고등학생들은 IT 기업의 신규채용 시 중요한 요인이 IT 전문역량이라고 인식하고 있었으며, IT 역량을 향상시키기 위해서는 실무중심 교육과 실습위주의 교육 등 '실습 위주 교육'이 가장 필요하다고 응답하였다. 또한, IT 핵심역량 중에서 가장 중요하다고 생각하는 하위 요인으로 영재학교와 정보과학고등학교는 '소프트웨어 기본역량'이 가장 중요하다고 인식하고 있었고, 공업고등학교는 '네트워크 및 보안 기본역량'이 가장 중요하다고 지각한 것으로 나타났다. 마지막으로, IT 역량 함양을 위해 가장 필요한 교육과정으로는 학교 유형별로 다르게 인식하고 있었는데, 영재학교 학생들은 '알고리즘'이 가장 필요하다고 인식하였고, 정보과학고등학교 학생들은 '자료구조' 및 '컴퓨터 구조'의 필요성을 가장 크게 인식하고 있었다. 공업고등학교 학생들의 경우에는 '프로그래밍 언어'가 가장 필요한 교과목이라고 응답하였다. 또한, IT 기업 채용시 중요한 요인(IT 전문역량, 학력, 기초직업능력, IT공통역량), IT 핵심역량 함양 교육방법(학교교육), IT 핵심역량 중요도(소프트웨어 기본역량, 데이터베이스 기본역량, 네트워크 및 보안 기본 역량, 통합적인 역량), IT 역량 향상을 위한 교육방법(운영체제, 하드웨어)에서 영재학생이 평재학생보다 더 중요성이나 필요성을 높게 인식하는 경향이 있는 것으로 나타났다. IT 교육을 받고 있는 영재학생, 정보과학고등학생 및 공업고등학교 학생들이 인식하는 IT 핵심역량을 비교분석한 본 연구결과가 향후 IT 인력 양성을 위한 교육과정 및 교육방법을 개선하고 보완하는데 기초자료로 활용될 수 있기를 기대한다.

인지행동적 분노조절 훈련이 아동의 분노조절능력과 교우관계에 미치는 효과 (The Effects of A Cognitive-Behavioral Anger Control Training on Anger Control Ability and Peer Relationships of Children)

  • 본 연구는 또래와 관계있는 분노유발상황에서 나타나는 인지적 오류를 수정하기 위한 인지행동적 분노조절 프로그램을 구성하여 분노유발경험과 분노조절 능력 및 교우관계에 미치는 효과를 알아보는데 목적이 있다. 인지행동적 분노조절 프로그램은 총 16회기로 구성하였다. $1{\sim}10$회기는 분노감정을 알아차리고 인지적 측면에서 분노유발과정을 이해하며 자동적 사고와 인지적 오류를 확인하고 인지적 오류를 수정하는 방법을 익힐 수 있도록 하였다. $11{\sim}15$회기는 13가지 분노유발상황 각각에 대해 인지적 오류를 확인하고 인지적 오류를 수정하는 연습을 하는 데에 초점을 두었다. 이렇게 구성한 프로그램의 효과를 알아보기 위하여 분노유발경험이 높고 분노조절능력이 낮은 동시에 교우관계에 어려움을 호소하는 아동 10명을 대상으로 매회 40분간 주 2회씩 8주간에 걸쳐 실시하였다. 그 결과를 2(집단)${\times}$(3)(측정시기) 변량분석한 결과 본 연구에서 구성한 인지행동적 분노조절 프로그램은 분노유발상황에서의 분노유발경험, 분노조절능력, 교우관계를 의미있게 변화시키고 그 효과가 6주 동안 지속되는 것으로 나타났다. 또한 인지행동적 분노조절 프로그램의 진행과정에서 아동들이 보인 인지적 오류는 당위적 진술, 이름붙이기, 흑백논리, 감정적 판단, 독심술, 나와 관련짓기, 과잉일반화, 성급한 결론 순으로 나타났고 인지적 오류를 수정하는 방법은 다른 사람이라면, 다르게 설명하기, 증거 찾기, 그래서, 시간이 흐른 후, 배운다 순으로 나타났다.

부산지역 중등학교 양호교사 및 양호겸직교사의 학교보건업무 활동 양상 (A Study of School Nursing Activity Performed by School Nurses and Teachers Holding Additional School Health)

  • The purpose of this study was to improve upon school health by understanding the present status of school health and escpecially to investigate the performance rate of regular health instruction. 261 schools, including middle and high schools enrolled in the Busan Educational Association, were sent Questionnaires. Data was collected from the 25th of January to the 10th of April, 1994. 229 subjects who responded to the Questionnaires were finally analyzed as samples. Among them, 127 were school nurses and 102 were teachers acting in a school health capacity. The results of this study are summerized as follows: Of the teachers holding additional school health responsibilities, $85.6\%$ worked in private schools. Many of them $(74.5\%)$ were formally dissatisfied with their ability to provide care because $85.3\%$ of them had never studied any school health. Some of them$(30.4\%)$ didn't know about the annual school nursing budget and $23.5\%$ of them hadn't taught any health education to students. In spite of this fact, they were placed in charge of a school health activity against their own will. There were statistically significant differences in the performance of school health affairs between nurses and teachers holding additional school health (p<0.001) as follows: annual school nursing budget, Health Program Planning and Evaluation, annual purchase price for medicines, average students cared for per day, average students who held at least one consultation per month and extra. Surely, the self-confidence of school nurses was higher than that of teachers with school health as an assigned responsibility. This was demonstrated by a significant statistical difference (p<0.01) in the responses by the two groups. $88.2\%$ of the school nurses and $73.5\%$ of teachers for school health thought that regular health instruction was necessary. But regular health education had been performed only by $32.8\%$ of respondents. Among them, 84% were school nurses and $16\%$ were teachers holding additional school health. Of the persons who performed regular health education, $69.3\%$ used less than $60\%$ of the health content of the athletic textbook. And $64\%$ of them said teaching materials were insufficient. Most of them $(69.4\%)$used home made lesson plans. which they compiled from various sources. There was a significant difference in the formality of the health lesson according to the concern of the school principal (p<0.01) and there was a significant difference in performing health education between school nurses and teachers holding additional school health (p<0.001) It appears that there are a lot of problems with providing school health care using people who are untrained. In a word, school health nurses with professional training are needed in order to perform the qualitative management for the health of the students. These days, regular health education is an indispensable part in making students improve their self-care abilities. Therefore a more effective and better defined program should be prepared for regular systematic health education. To resolve these problems, present laws and regulations related to school health should be revised considering the specialist's request for the improvement of school health. In addition, the concern and financial support of the government are essential.

저산소 허혈 뇌 손상을 유발시킨 미성숙 흰쥐에서 마우스 골수 기원 중간엽 줄기 세포 이식 후 기능 회복 (Functional recovery after transplantation of mouse bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells for hypoxic-ischemic brain injury in immature rats)

  • 목 적 : HIE의 치료법으로 줄기 세포가 대안으로 떠오르고 있다. mMSC가 성인 동물 모델에서의 뇌졸중 및 퇴행성 뇌질환에 유의한 기능 회복을 보인다는 보고가 많이 있으나 미성숙 동물 모델에서의 연구 보고는 거의 없는 상태이다. 이에 HIE가 유발된 미성숙뇌에 mMSC를 투여하여 기능 회복에 대한 효과를 평가하고자 본 연구를 시행하였다. 방 법 : 생후 7일된 수컷 Sprague-Dawley 흰쥐를 sham 대조군, 뇌 손상 대조군, 고용량 mMSC 이식군 및 저용량 mMSC 이식군으로 나누었으며 저산소 허혈 뇌 손상 유도 2주 후에 mMSC를 병변부 국소 이식을 시행하였다. 세포 이식 2, 4, 6 및 8주째에 개방장 시험을 시행하여 운동 기능 회복 정도를 평가하였고, 이후 1주일 동안 Morris 수중 미로 시험을 3개 부문으로 시행하여 학습 및 기억력 회복 정도를 평가하였다. 결 과 : 개방장 시험 결과 네 군간에서 통계적으로 유의한 차이는 없었다(F=0.412, P=0.745). 공간 획득 검사에서 네 군간 평균 탈출 시간에 서로 차이가 있었고(F=380.319, P<0.01), 고용량 mMSC 이식군 및 sham 대조군은 뇌 손상 대조군에 비해 검사 2일째부터 5일째까지 각각 평균 탈출 시간이 감소하였으며(P<0.05), 시간이 갈수록 더 유의하게 차이를 보였다(F=16.034, P<0.01). 참조 기억 검사에서는 네 군간 차이는 없었으며 시각 검사에서는 다섯번째 시행 검사에서만 고용량 mMSC 이식군과 뇌 손상 대조군간에 통계적으로 유의한 차이가 있었다(P<0.05). 결 론 : 일부 검사에서만 고용량 mMSC 이식의 효과가 뚜렷하였고 그 외의 검사에는 통계적으로 유의한 결과는 보이지는 않았으나 산술적인 호전을 보이는 것을 확인할 수 있었다. 향후 최적의 효과를 보이는 줄기 세포의 농도와 이식 시기를 결정하는 연구가 필요할 것으로 보이며 HIE에서 mMSC가 대안적인 치료 수단으로 이용될 수 있다고 생각된다.

우리 나라 농촌지역(農村地域)에 부합하는 1차(次) 보건의료전달체계(保健醫療傳達體系) 정착구현(定着具現)에 관한 연구(硏究) -마을 보건임원(保健任員) 개발(開發)- (A Study on Implementation of Primary Health Care Delivery System meet to Rural Area in Korea -Village Health Voluntary Worker Development-)

  • A study was carried out from October 1977 to September 1978 in order to develope health care delively system which will meet to rural area in Korea. For the study objective a model of health care delivery system of Myun (township) area was developed which is adopted the net-work of village health voluntary worker who will play the role of bridge for communication related with health and illness between families or village people and health subcenter, and :he model health care delivery system net-work was set in the area of Soodong Myun, Yangju Gun. which is the rural health demonstration area of Ewha Womans University since 1972. The activities and attitude of 22 village health voluntary workers were observed and analized. during the study period. The results are as follows; 1. For the field activities of village health voluntary workers. a guide line which is described with specific behavioral objectives was developed and used for not only training of the workers but also evaluation of their field activities. 2. During the study period, the number of 971 village people were served primary health care service by village health voluntary worker and the service was classified largely into symptomatic medications (92%) and preventive measures (8%). 3. Comparative percentage of the number of 894 symptomatic cases cared by village health voluntary workers to 5,695 cases of patient treated by Soodong Health Subcenter during the same period was 15.7%. 4. Annual utility rate of village health voluntary worker by Myun total people was 16.1% but utility rate by Rie was varied from 38.2% to 2.8% which shown there were considerable differences in each Rie. In order to settle the village health care service, the obstructive factors of utility should be detected and their counter measure must be taken. 5. As the health need of village people increases, it is expected that the supplement of drug excluding present sit basic drugs is inevitable, but considering the ability of village health voluntary worker, the selection of additional drugs and education, plan should be carefully studied. 6. It is desirable that a financial resource for supplementary purchase of first aid kit, drugs and materials whould be alloted from village public fund like Saemaeul Women's Club fund, which has already practiced in a few villages in the study area. 7. As pointed out by village health voluntary workers, in order to improve the village health, village leaders should be in the center of it and the cooperation of whole village people is a core of healthful village development, and it is reasonable that the health subcenter backs up these voluntary health activities by village people in techniques. 8. It seems effective that a supplementary education for village health voluntary worker be accomplished by a planned education through regular meetings like worker's monthly meeting and irregular post guide when Myun Health Workers can handle the problems found during the round trip of villages. 9. It is desirable that village health voluntary workers, who are recommended by a civil voluntary organization like Saemael Woman's Club, are charged by natural villagc unit, are given a function of village health care service and used through basic education at health subcenter. 10. It is advisable that the village health voluntary worker's service is compensated not by a form of money, but by other way such as an exemption of medical fee of worker herself or her families in health subcenter can be one method. 11. Daily health activities of each village health voluntary worker should be reported to health subcenter by biweekly or monthly in order to get not only for basic data of the program but also for evaluation the program. It is recomandable that the report form should be simple and clear enough for village health voluntary worker to fill it effectively. 12. Village health care service should be developed into a Saemaeul Movement in which village people actively participate. For this, the appointed function of village health voluntary worker should be absorbed into those of living Environment Betterment Section or Family Planning Section of Saemaeul Women's Club or it is desirable that establish a new section, Village Health Promoting Section and make it involve the appointed functions of those sections mentioned above.

일 지역 중·고등학생의 흡연실태 (A Study on the Actual Conditions of Smoking in Middle and High School Students in One Region)

  • To investigate the actual conditions of smoking in middle and high school students in Chinan County, I used a sturctured questionnaire for 1,579 students attending twelve middle-high schools from December 1, 1998 to December 20, 1998. I collected and data correlated the using an $SPSS-PC^+$ 1. The smoking rate of middle-high schoo1 students in Chinan County was 17.9%, relatively high. This smoking rate was different according to the gender, grade, religion, and economic situation. In mals, high school students, non-religious, students low income family students, the smoking rate was higher. The smoking rate of high school students was almost the same as the smoking rate of adults, generally higher than that of foreign teenagers. Because the smoking rat of studinets in the third grade of middle school and in the first grade of high School was six times higher, increased education should be conducted during this time in an attempt to curb the sudden increase of the smoking rate. The smoking rate of girl students was 5.0%; this has increased mor than three times from ten years ago. Consequently, counter measures should be taken against the smoking of female students as well as juvenile smoking in general. In addition, the smoking rate of middle-high school students showed interesting differences when correnated with enviornmental factors. Students with low grades, who are not satisfied with school life, who don't have both parents, who have uncaring parents who nare too strict or too arbitary, who have smoking parents, or who have experienced smoking commonly smoked. Therefore, to lower the smoking rate we should improve the school environment, improve a student's interest in school life. And parents or siblings should lead by example and quit smoking at home. Schools should educate students more effectively concerning the harmful effects of smoking and create an accurate understanding of its dancers. From the beginning, we should teach students never ever to touch cigaretts. 2. The surve discovered that most students started out of curiosity, or solicitantion from friends or elders at middle school, and had been smoking one to five cigarettes for more than a year. They obtained cigarettes at stores and most of them have friends who smoke. As a result anti-smoking education should be conducted at elementary schools prior to middle school. More than 95% of the teenagers who smoke had friends who smote and smoked out of curiosity or the recommendation of elders. Thus, we must focus on teenagers who smoke in group, rather than individually. The survey showed that the great number of students had a nuetral position. Because this nuetrality may increase Juvenile smoking, education that provides an exact understanding of smoking should be performed to build the correct attidude toward smoking. 4. Middle school students smoke when angry, gloomy, anxious, a lone and when they have some problems to solve, on when they feel inconveniened in other wores, they smoke to reliver stress. They also smok due to addiction. Because smoking is not a praetical method to relieve stress, a program which helps to acquire positive relief stress should be provided to help reduce smoking. 5. About 65% of students who smoke want to quit smoking because of health problem, 78% of them have tried mor than once to quit but failed due to weak will power and peer pressure from friends who smoke. Juvenile smoking is group, oriented. Thus, the program that advances less smoking will be the one that focuseds on groups. 6. As for advice to students who want to quit smoking, "persuasion" was used most commonly, followed by a "presentation on how to quit smoking". Another method were severe punishment. About 70% of the students wanted the anti-smoking guide at school. 7. Most students (73.5%) had a position that more anti-smoking education at school is needed. Obriously, then, anti-smoking education at middle-high schools should be reinfoced. Although the education which explains the harmful influence of tobacco is known as an efficient way prevent smoking; it does not influence students who already smoke. Therefore, for students who smoke, multi-dimensional approaches must be attempted that include physical training, phychokogical approache, consultation and discussion, medical chek-ups, audio-visual education technigues, and professonal instructors, in addition, because smoking students have more negative on lukewarm attitude to anti-smoking education anti-smoking education should be conducted through a communicative style by dedicated teachers who care about students.   • With the advent of communication technologies including electronic collaborative tools and conferencing systems provided over the Internet, virtual collaboration is becoming increasingly common in organizations. Virtual collaboration refers to an environment in which the people working together are interdependent in their tasks, share responsibility for outcomes, are geographically dispersed, and rely on mediated rather than face-to face, communication to produce an outcome. Research suggests that new sets of individual skill, knowledge, and ability (SKAs) are required to perform effectively in today's virtualized workplace, which is labeled as individual virtual competence. It is also argued that use of online social networking sites may influence not only individuals' daily lives but also their capability to manage their work-related relationships in organizations, which in turn leads to better performance. The existing research regarding (1) the relationship between virtual competence and task performance and (2) the relationship between online networking and task performance has been conducted based on different theoretical perspectives so that little is known about how online social networking and virtual competence interplay to predict individuals' task performance. To fill this gap, this study raises the following research questions: (1) What is the individual virtual competence required for better adjustment to the virtual collaboration environment? (2) How does online networking via diverse social network service sites influence individuals' task performance in organizations? (3) How do the joint effects of individual virtual competence and online networking influence task performance? To address these research questions, we first draw on the prior literature and derive four dimensions of individual virtual competence that are related with an individual's self-concept, knowledge and ability. Computer self-efficacy is defined as the extent to which an individual beliefs in his or her ability to use computer technology broadly. Remotework self-efficacy is defined as the extent to which an individual beliefs in his or her ability to work and perform joint tasks with others in virtual settings. Virtual media skill is defined as the degree of confidence of individuals to function in their work role without face-to-face interactions. Virtual social skill is an individual's skill level in using technologies to communicate in virtual settings to their full potential. It should be noted that the concept of virtual social skill is different from the self-efficacy and captures an individual's cognition-based ability to build social relationships with others in virtual settings. Next, we discuss how online networking influences both individual virtual competence and task performance based on the social network theory and the social learning theory. We argue that online networking may enhance individuals' capability in expanding their social networks with low costs. We also argue that online networking may enable individuals to learn the necessary skills regarding how they use technological functions, communicate with others, and share information and make social relations using the technical functions provided by electronic media, consequently increasing individual virtual competence. To examine the relationships among online networking, virtual competence, and task performance, we developed research models (the mediation, interaction, and additive models, respectively) by integrating the social network theory and the social learning theory. Using data from 112 employees of a virtualized company, we tested the proposed research models. The results of analysis partly support the mediation model in that online social networking positively influences individuals' computer self-efficacy, virtual social skill, and virtual media skill, which are key predictors of individuals' task performance. Furthermore, the results of the analysis partly support the interaction model in that the level of remotework self-efficacy moderates the relationship between online social networking and task performance. The results paint a picture of people adjusting to virtual collaboration that constrains and enables their task performance. This study contributes to research and practice. First, we suggest a shift of research focus to the individual level when examining virtual phenomena and theorize that online social networking can enhance individual virtual competence in some aspects. Second, we replicate and advance the prior competence literature by linking each component of virtual competence and objective task performance. The results of this study provide useful insights into how human resource responsibilities assess employees' weakness and strength when they organize virtualized groups or projects. Furthermore, it provides managers with insights into the kinds of development or training programs that they can engage in with their employees to advance their ability to undertake virtual work.
