Comparison of Immunomodualtory Effects of Water-extracted Adenophorae Radix, Liriopis Tuber, Dendrobii Herba, Polygonati Odorati Rhizoma and Polygonati Rhizoma (보음약인 사삼, 맥문동, 석곡, 옥죽, 황정의 면역조절 효과 비교)

  • Adenophorae Radix (AR), Liriopis Tuber (LT), Dendrobii Monile (DM), Polygonati Officinalis (PO), Polygonati Rhizoma (PR) have been used to treated a variety condition/diseases in traditional oriental medicine. The present study was conducted to investigate the immunmodulatory effects of the water-extracted AR, LT, DH, PO and PR. In spleen cell proliferation assay, DH was significantly enhanced mitogenic activity compared with control group. In RT-PCR, DH ad PO induced IL-2 and IFNr cytokine gene expression in mouse spleen cells. Methotrexate(MTX), immune supression agent, was significantly inhibited mouse spleen cell proliferation(1600 mg/ml). In spite of MTX treatement, DH and PO sustained the spleen cell proliferation, In the flow cytometry analysis, DH stimulated mouse spleen cells showed an increase in B-cell phenotype (CD45R/B220). The water-extracted DH and PO inhibited NO production and iNOS expression in LPS-stimulated RAW 264.7 macrophage cell. DH induced IL-2 and IFNg gene expression in human peripheral mononuclear cells. The GC-MS analysis show that the main component of water-extracted DH was b-Nitroethyl alcohol. The main components of water-extracted PO were Dipirartril-tropico, Methyl sulfoxide and Demsodrox. These data suggest that among these extracts, DH has a protective effcet of immune suppression caused by MTX. DH may be enhance cellular and humoral immune response by the regulation of cytokine gene expression, NO production and B cell production.

Study on Attitudes of Officials Depending on System of Collaborative Practice between Traditional Korean Medicine and Western Medicine (한양방협진 이용에 따른 일부 공무원들의 인식도 조사)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate different attitudes of officers depending on system of collaborative practice between traditional Korean medicine and western medicine. A total of 103 officials were surveyed using structured questionnaires. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, ${\chi}^2$ test with the SPSS program. Use of oriental medicine clinic was significantly higher and use of general hospitals was significantly lower in a group of users (p=.021). Higher rates of disease status were found in a group of users (p=.024). 'Overcome limits of Traditional Korean Medicine and Western Medicine' and 'collaborative practice would bring benefits' as the reasons of using collaborative practice between Traditional Korean Medicine and Western Medicine showed higher rates (p<.001). It showed high interests in collaborative practice between Traditional Korean Medicine and Western Medicine in two groups, but higher rates of prospect of collaborative practice between Traditional Korean Medicine and Western Medicine revitalization were found in the group of users. Also, more than 60% of the officers showed positive attitudes in the system of the collaborative practice. Therefore, correct researches on actual conditions about collaborative practice between Korean and Western Medicine and positive and negative aspects of this collaborative practice pointed by candidates need to be considered in order to improve candidates' health condition.

  • Yoon Gil-Young(1911-1987) was a frontier of the field of Traditional Korean Medical Physiology(TKMP) who was academically active since mid 1950s until early 1970s. He wrote several important papers and books. Among his writings, "A Study on the Methodology of Traditional Korean Medical Physiology", which was published serially in the "Korean Oriental Medical Journal" from June 1966 until March 1967, played an important role in establishing the contemporary TKMP and showed his academic stance on Traditional Korean Medicine(TKM). This review will evaluate this paper's contribution to the establishment of TKMP in historical context, summarize the unique characteristics of his understanding of TKMP by analyzing the text, and then based on those information, examine his view on TKMP and TKM. Historically, this paper was written in transition period from the traditional TKM knowledge system to the modernized one. Aim of this paper was to provide a methodology for establishing TKMP as a scientific knowledge system like that of the western medicine. Based on his study of Yin-Yang theory and theory of five circuits and six qi in Huangdi's Internal Classics, he suggested those theories as methods to observing life phenomena and systematizing the observations. And he regarded these methods as of great value in determining the unique characteristics of TKM compared to those of western medicine. Through re-reading this paper, it was found that he had pride and confidence in the methodology of TKM, and also that he thought in scientizing and modernizing TKM it was very important to understand and efficiently put in use the methodology of TKM. It was also found that his view on TKMP and TKM was pro modernization.

Screening on Monoamine Oxidase B Inhibitor and Antioxidant Activity from the Water Extracts of Medicinal Plants (한약재 물 추출물의 Monoamine Oxidase B의 활성 억제 및 항산화 활성 검색)

  • This present study was designed to screen medicinal plants for the treatment of brain diseases such as Parkinson's disease or Alzheimer's disease. The inhibitory activity of monoamine oxidase B (MAO-B) was investigated in the water extracts of 56 species traditional medicines. Among the tested medicinal plants, E. lathyris, R. palmatum, F. rhynchonphylla, E. caryophyllata, E. pekinensis and H. syriacus were showed the strong inhibitory activity against MAO-B. Therefore, MAO-B inhibitory activity of 6 traditional medicine extracts in the different concentration (2.5, 6.5 and 12.5 ㎍/ml) was determined. The inhibitory effect of MAO-B was detected with dose dependently in 6 traditional plants extracts. E. caryophyllata and R. palmatum were showed the highest inhibitory activity, the MAO-B inhibitory activity at 2.5㎍ of herbal extract being 58% and 52%, respectively. The water extracts of 6 species were tested on antioxidant activity using radical scavenging effects against ABTS/sup +/. The water extracts of R. palmatum, E. caryphyllata, E. pekinensis and H. syriacus were showed strong antioxidant capacity at 20 ㎍ concentration. Among the 56 medicinal plants investigated, the water extracts of R. palmatum and E. caryphyllata were showed significant antioxidant capacity and MAO-B inhibiory activity. Therefore, R. palmatum and E. caryphyllata are expected to ameliorate the clinical symptoms in Parkinson's disease due to significant MAO-B inhibition and radical scavenging effect.

Inhibitory Effect of Scolopendra Morsitans L. Ether Extract on Lipopolysaccharide-Induced Inflammatory Response in RAW 264.7 Cells (오공(蜈蚣) 에테르 추출물의 RAW 264.7 cell에서 LPS로 유도된 염증반응 억제 효과)

  • It has been reported that Scolopendra morsitans L.(SML) has beneficial effects on human health and diverse diseases. The purpose of this study was to investigate the anti-inflammatory effects of ether extract from Scolopendra morsitans L. on lipopolysaccharide(LPS)-induced inflammatory response. Thus, we examined the inhibitory effect of SML ether fraction on LPS-induced increase of inflammatory mediators(NO, iNOS, COX-2, and $I{\kappa}B{\alpha}$) and pro-inflammatory cytokines(TNF-${\alpha}$) in RAW 264.7 cells. In the present study, SML ether extract itself decreased cell viability in a dose dependent manner(> 100 ${\mu}g/ml$). In addition, LPS increased NO production, iNOS expression and phosphorylation of $I{\kappa}-B{\alpha}$, which were blocked by the treatment of SML ether fraction in a dose dependent manner. Furthermore, the treatment of LPS increased TNF-${\alpha}$ production. However, the pretreatment of SML ether fraction prevented the LPS-induced TNF-${\alpha}$ production in dose dependant manner. Taken together, our results suggest that SML may be a beneficial drug against inflammatory diseases such as sepsis.

Effect of Astragali radix Extract on Acetaminophen-induced Hepatotoxicity in Mice (황기 추출액이 Acetaminophen으로 유발된 마우스의 간 손상에 미치는 영향)

  • Astragali radix (AR) is one of the oldest and mast frequently used crude drug for traditional medicine in many Asian countries. This study designed to investigate the hepatoprotective effects of the aqueous extracted AR (ARE) against acetaminophen (APAP)-induced hepatic damage in ICR mice. APAP at the dose of 450 mg/kg i.p produced liver damage in ICR mice. Serum enzyme activities of alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase and sorbitol dehydrogenese was dramatically decreased up to control level by pretreatment of ARE. However, hepatic glutathione level did not show a significant change between the tested groups. We also investigated TNF α mRNA gene expression on APAP-induced liver damage by RT-PCR. APAP dramatically induced TNF α mRNA gene expression in ICR mice. Pretreatment of mice with ARE led to a marked decrease of TNF α mRNA gene expression. These data indicate that 1) ARE has clearly revealed a hepatoprotective effect against APAP-induced hepatic damage in ICR mice, and 2) the protective effect of ARE may be, in part, associated with the regulation of TNF α mRNA gene expression.

Comparative Study of the National Policies for Korean Oriental Medicine and Traditional Chinese Medicine (한의학과 중의학에 대한 국가정책 비교연구)

  • The structure of medical profession is composed of multiple relations among state, patients, and medical professions. There are conflicts between the nation and medical professions because the nation controls the monopoly of medical professions through medical policies. Patients make relations with medical profession as medical consumers. And medical professions compete each other in order to gain the control of the medical market. This paper attempts to review the dynamic relations between the nation and medical professions. The medical professions and the nation are in conflict about the control of the autonomy of medical professions. The medical professions want to exercise the monopoly rights in their own area and, on the other had, the nation wants to prevent problems that might result from the monopoly by regulations and to have the control over the national operation. Given this, the common view of medical sociology is that the nation and the medical professions are in constant conflict. The arguments that the present medical sociology has on the relationship between the nation and medical professions can be summarized like these: first, the nation is the authenticator of medical system; second, the nation is a medical provider and consumer; and, third, the nation is a mediator of regulations and conflicts. Based on the above mentioned relations between the nation and medical professions, this paper attempts to see how the nation, which is one component of the medical structure, make influences on Korean Oriental doctors and Traditional Chinese doctors. So as to do this, the changes in medical policies and promoting policies for Korean Oriental medicine and Traditional Chinese medicine are analyzed. Finally, the differences in national policies of Korean Oriental medicine and Traditional Chinese medicine are compared.

A Comparative Analysis of Traditional Korean and Chinese Medicine Treatments for Lung Cancer : from a Cancer Treatment Book and Case Reports (한의와 중의 폐암 치료법의 비교 분석: 중의 암 치료 서적과 국내 치료 증례로부터)

  • Objectives: Recent trends in traditional Korean medicine (TKM) lung cancer treatment involve the administration of a few ready-made herbal formulas in batches. However, utilizing a TKM pathology-based formulation of herbs can fill in the gaps in holistic treatment that are often missed in a one-size-fits-all approach. The author aimed to analyze treatment trends between a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) cancer treatment specialty book and a series of Korean lung cancer TKM treatment case reports. Methods: The frequently used pattern identification types, herbal formulas, and herbs in the lung cancer chapter of a TCM cancer treatment specialty book and case reports of TKM treatment of lung cancer were analyzed in a comparative manner. Results: Twenty-four pattern identification types for lung cancer were derived from the TCM book, and they were Phlegm-blood stasis, lung heat, and deficiency type. Six types of pattern identification types were derived from the 20 cases reports of TKM treatment, and they were blood stasis due to qi stagnation and deficiency type. Twelve cases were treated with ready-made anti-tumor herbal preparations without performing a pattern identification, accounting for two-thirds of the cases. Conclusions: The treatment of lung cancer in TCM is characterized by the use of pattern identification to formulate herbal formulas with simultaneous administration of anti-tumor herbs within the same formula. The treatment of lung cancer in TKM is relatively infrequent in its use of pattern identification. In addition, herbal formulas derived through the process of pattern identification and derived for anti-tumor purposes were often administered separately.

  • In the study about the logical basis and interpreting methods of animal experiments using rats in traditional medicine, several conclusions are obtained and summarized as following. 1. The logical basis of the animal experiments in traditional medicine is the essential homogeneity between human and rat defined as various transformation of one Qi(一氣) packed the cosmos. 2. Morphologically, the rat has abundant Yin(陰) and less Yang(陽) in most of anatomical characteristics. 3. Physiologically, the rat has unstable heart and mild temper with good fertility, which shows the features of Yin animal. 4. Pathologically, the rat shows the pathology of injury of viscera by stresses(氣激傷臟) and pathological transformations of internal water(痰飮水濕) mainly. 5. Constitutionally, the rat is alike to water type man(水形人) or Soeumin(小陰人) out of Yin Ren(陰人). 6. So, the rat is the proper experimental animal for diseases of sputum and water, emotional stimulations, endocrine system, heart, kidney, Yin syndrome(陰證) etc..

Study on the Relationship between Physiology of Humor and Body fluid and Pathology of 'Phlegm-retained fluid' (수액(水液) 및 진액(津液) 생리(生理)와 담음(痰飮) 병리(病理)의 상관관계에 대한 고찰)

  • There are two kinds of body fluid metabolism in Traditional Korean Medicine based on 'Internal Classic'("內經"); one is metabolism of body fluid(津液) meaning metabolism of physiological substance, and another is metabolism of humor meaning a metabolic process that excretes waste out of the body. 'Phlegm-retained fluid'(痰飮) is a typical pathological condition caused by abnormal fluid metabolism in Traditional Korean Medicine. As a result of reviewing the literature on 'phlegm-retained fluid'(痰飮), the following facts were found; 'Phlegm-retained fluid'(痰飮) is formed by abnormal state of metabolism of body fluid(津液). In other words, because of the action of various etiologies, qi(氣) and body fluid(津液) metabolism can have abnormal conditions and these metabolic disorders cause formation of 'phlegm-retained fluid'(痰飮). Treatments for 'phlegm-retained fluid'(痰飮) include the following: Eliminating the causes of illness, recovery of metabolism of qi(氣) and body fluid(津液), and functional recovery of pancreas and kidney related to body fluid(津液) metabolism. These treatments are distinguished from promotion of sweating(發汗) and helping urination, the treatments for humor metabolism abnormality.
