The difference in lattice parameter and thermal expansion coefficient between GaN and Si which results in many defects into the grown GaN is larger than that between GaN and sapphire. In order to obtain high quality GaN films on Si substrate, it is essential to understand growth characteristics of GaN. In this study, GaN layers were grown on Si(111) substrates by MOCVD at three different GaN growth temperatures ($900^{\circ}C$, $1,000^{\circ}C$ and $1,100^{\circ}C$), using AlN and LT-GaN buffer layers. Using TEM, we carried out the comparative investigation of growth characteristics of GaN by characterizing lattice coherency, crystallinity, orientation relationship and defects formed (transition region, stacking fault, dislocation, etc). The localized region with high defect density was formed due to the lattice mismatch between AlN buffer layer and GaN. As the growth temperature of GaN increases, the defect density and surface roughness of GaN are decreased. In the case of GaN grown at $1,100^{\circ}$, growth thickness is decreased, and columns with out-plane misorientation are formed.
The mechanical and electrical properties of hot-pressed and annelaed $\beta$-SiC+39vol.% $ZrB_2$ electroconductive ceramic composites were investigated as a function of the liquid forming additives of $Al_2O_3+Y_2O_3$(6:4 wt%). In this microstructures, no reactions and elongated $\alpha$-SiC grains with equiaxed $ZrB_2$ grains were observed between $\beta$-SiC and $ZrB_2$. The properties of the $\beta$-SiC+39vol.%$ZrB_2$ composites with 4wt% $Al_2O_3+Y_2O_3$ at R.T. are as follows: fracture toughness is 6.37 MPa.m1/2, electical resistivity is $1.51\times10^{-4}\Omega \cdot\textrm{cm}$ and the relative density is 98.6% of the theoretical density. The fracture toughness of the $\beta$-SiC+39 vol.% $ZrB_2$ composites were weakly decreased with increasing amount of $Al_2O_3+Y_2O_3$ additives. Internal stresses due to the difference of $\beta$-SiC and $ZrB_2$ thermal expansion coefficient and elastic modulus mismatch appeared to contribute to fracture toughening in $\beta$-SiC+39vol.%$ZrB_2$ electroconductive ceramic composites.

TCP(Tape Carrier Package), COG (Chip On Glass), COF(Chip On Film) are three methods for connecting LDI(LCD Driver IC) with LCD panels. Especially COF is growing its portion of market place because of low cost and fine pitch correspondence. But COF has a problem of the lead broken failure in LCD module process and the usage of customer. During PCB (Printed Circuit Board) bonding process, the mismatch of the coefficient of thermal expansion between PCB and D-IC makes stress-concentration in COF lead, and also D-IC bending process during module assembly process makes the level of stress in COF lead higher. As an affecting factors of lead-broken failure, the effects of SR(Solder Resister) coating on the COF lead, surface roughness and grain size of COF lead, PI(Polyimide) film thickness, lead width and the ACF(Anisotropic Conductive Film) overlap were studied, The optimization of these affecting manufacturing processes and materials were suggested and verified to prevent the lead-broken failure.

Strong exciton-photon coupling in microcavities have generated an intense research effort since quasiparticles called exciton polaritons are produced and shows interesting phenomena. Most of studies have been done with GaAs based microcavities at cryogenic temperature. Recently, GaN material which has large exciton binding energy and oscillator strength has much attention because strong coupling between photon and exciton could be realized at room temperature. However, fabrication of high quality microcavity using GaN is challengeable due to the large mismatch between the lattice and the thermal expansion coefficient in GaN based distributed Bragg mirror. Here, we observed strong coupling regime of exciton-photon in GaN micro-rods which were grown by metalorganic vapour phase epitaxy (MOCVD) on Si substrate. Owing to the hexagonal cross-section of micro-rod, whispering gallery modes of photon are naturally formed and could be coupled with exciton in GaN. Using angle-resolved micro-photoluminescence measurement, exciton polariton dispersion curves were directly observed from GaN micro-rod. We expect room temperature exciton polariton condensation could be realized in high quality GaN micro-rod.
The warpage on mobile phone camera packages occurs due to the CTE(Coefficient of Thermal Expansion) mismatch between a thin silicon die and a substrate. The warpage in the optical instruments such as camera module has an effect on the field curvature, which is one of the factors degrading the optical performance and the product yield. In this paper, we studied the effect of die bonding epoxy on the package and optical performance of mobile phone camera packages. We calculated the warpages of camera module packages by using a finite element analysis, and their shapes were in good agreement showing parabolic curvature. We also measured the warpages and through-focus MTF of camera module specimens with experiments. The warpage was improved on an epoxy with low elastic modulus at both finite element analysis and experiment results, and the MTF performance increased accordingly. The results show that die bonding epoxy affects the warpage generated on the image sensor during the packaging process, and this warpage eventually affects the optical performance associated with the field curvature.

This paper describes the influence of a polycrystalline (poly) 3C-SiC buffer layer on the surface acoustic wave (SAW) properties of poly aluminum nitride (AlN) thin films by comparing the center frequency, insertion loss, the electromechanical coupling coefficient ($k^2$), andthetemperaturecoefficientoffrequency(TCF) of an IDT/AlN/3C-SiC structure with those of an IDT/AlN/Si structure, The poly-AlN thin films with an (0002)-preferred orientation were deposited on a silicon (Si) substrate using a pulsed reactive magnetron sputtering system. Results show that the insertion loss (21.92 dB) and TCF (-18 ppm/$^{\circ}C$) of the IDT/AlN/3C-SiC structure were improved by a closely matched coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) and small lattice mismatch (1 %) between the AlN and 3C-SiC. However, a drawback is that the $k^2(0.79%)$ and SAW velocity(5020m/s) of the AlN/3C-SiC SAW device were reduced by appearing in some non-(0002)AlN planes such as the (10 $\bar{1}$ 2) and (10 $\bar{1}$ 3) AlN planes in the AlN/SiC film. Although disadvantages were shown to exist, the use of the AlN/3C-SiC structure for SAW applications at high temperatures is possible. The characteristics of the AlN thin films were also evaluated using FT-IR spectra, XRD, and AFM images.

Effects of wet chemical treatment and thermal cycle conditions on the quantitative interfacial adhesion energy of $Cu/SiN_x$ thin film interfaces were evaluated by 4-point bending test method. The test samples were cleaned by chemical treatment after Cu chemical-mechanical polishing (CMP). The thermal cycle test between Cu and $SiN_x$ capping layer was experimented at the temperature, -45 to $175^{\circ}C$ for 250 cycles. The measured interfacial adhesion energy increased from 10.57 to $14.87J/m^2$ after surface chemical treatment. After 250 thermal cycles, the interfacial adhesion energy decreased to $5.64J/m^2$ and $7.34J/m^2$ for without chemical treatment and with chemical treatment, respectively. The delaminated interfaces were confirmed as $Cu/SiN_x$ interface by using the scanning electron microscope and energy dispersive spectroscopy. From X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis results, the relative Cu oxide amounts between $SiN_x$ and Cu decreased by chemical treatment and increased after thermal cycle. The thermal stress due to the mismatch of thermal expansion coefficient during thermal cycle seemed to weaken the $Cu/SiN_x$ interface adhesion, which led to increased CuO amounts at Cu film surface.
The potential candidates for IT-SOFCs cathode materials, $Ba_{0.5}Sr_{0.5}Co_{0.8}Fe_{0.2}O_{3-{\delta}}$ (BSCF) and $La_{0.6}Ba_{0.4}Co_{0.2}Fe_{0.8}O_{3-{\delta}}$ (LBCF) powders, were synthesized by a EDTA-citrate combined method from $Sr(NO_3)_2$, $Ba(NO_3)_2$, $La(NO_3)_3{\cdot}6H_2O$, $Co(NO_3)_2{\cdot}6H_2O$, $Fe(NO_3)_3{\cdot}9H_2O$, citric acid and $EDTA-NH_3$. The cathode performance of symmetrical electrochemical cells consisting of BSCF-GDC or LBCF-GDC composite electrodes and a GDC electrolyte was investigated using by AC impedance spectroscopy at the temperature range of 500 to $700^{\circ}C$. It was found that a single phase perovskite could be successfully synthesized when the precursor is heated at $850^{\circ}C$ for 2 h. Due to thermal expansion mismatch between BSCF and GDC, the composite cathodes with lower GDC content than 45 wt% were peeled off from the GDC electrolyte and their electrode polarization resistance was estimated to be high. The thermal expansion coefficient of BSCF-GDC composites was decreased with increasing the GDC content and the electrode peeling off did not occur in BSCF-45 and 55 wt% GDC composites. BSCF-45 wt% GDC composite electrode showed the lowest area specific resistances (ASR) of 0.15 and $0.04{\Omega}{\cdot}cm^2$ at 600 and $700^{\circ}C$, respectively. On the other hand, LBCF-GDC composite cathodes showed higher ASR than the BSCF-45 and 55 wt% GDC and their cathode performance were decreased with the GDC content.
GaN is most commonly used to make LED elements. But, due to differences of the thermal expansion coefficient and lattice mismatch with sapphire, dislocations have occurred at about $109{\sim}1010/cm^2$. Generally, a low temperature GaN buffer layer is used between the GaN layer and the sapphire substrate in order to reduce the dislocation density and improve the characteristics of the thin film, and thus to increase the efficiency of the LED. Further, patterned sapphire substrate (PSS) are applied to improve the light extraction efficiency. In this experiment, using an AlN buffer layer on PSS in place of the GaN buffer layer that is used mainly to improve the properties of the GaN film, light extraction efficiency and overall properties of the thin film are improved at the same time. The AlN buffer layer was deposited by using a sputter and the AlN buffer layer thickness was determined to be 25 nm through XRD analysis after growing the GaN film at $1070^{\circ}C$ on the AlN buffer CPSS (C-plane Patterned Sapphire Substrate, AlN buffer 25 nm, 100 nm, 200 nm, 300 nm). The GaN film layer formed by applying a 2 step epitaxial lateral overgrowth (ELOG) process, and by changing temperatures ($1020{\sim}1070^{\circ}C$) and pressures (85~300 Torr). To confirm the surface morphology, we used SEM, AFM, and optical microscopy. To analyze the properties (dislocation density and crystallinity) of a thin film, we used HR-XRD and Cathodoluminescence.

This study proposes finite element modeling of dislocation punching at cooling after consolidation in order to calculate the strength of particle-reinforced aluminum composites. The Taylor dislocation model combined with strain gradient plasticity around the reinforced particle is adopted to take into account the size-dependency of different volume fractions of the particle. The strain gradients were obtained from the equivalent plastic strain calculated during the cooling of the spherical unit cell, when the dislocation punching due to CTE (Coefficient of Thermal Expansion) mismatch is activated. The enhanced yield stress was observed by including the strain gradients, in an average sense, over the punched zone. The tensile strength of the SiCp/Al 356-T6 composite was predicted through the finite element analysis of an axisymmetric unit cell for various sizes and volume fractions of the particle. The predicted strengths were found to be in good agreement with the experimental data. Further, the particle-size dependency was clearly established.
