The purpose of this study was to estimate the minimum monthly food cost for the low income population. The food consumption data of 9,311 individuals from the 2001 Korean National Health and Nutrition Survey was used. The monthly food cost was calculated using the Consumer Food Price Database for the year 2001 provided by the Public Health Nutrition Laboratory, Seoul National University. The low income population (n = 1,310) was characterized as older age, lower income, smaller family size, lower education level, and lower energy intake as compared with the total population (n = 8,001). The estimated food cost showed that men in the low income population needed 15% more money for purchasing food to maintain the energy intake level at the average energy intake level of men in the total population. It was also estimated that women in the low income population needed 9% more money for purchasing food to maintain the energy intake level at the average energy intake level of women in the total population. There were differences in monthly food costs depending on the sex and age, and family size. The results of this study could be used as basic information to establish minimum food cost for the low income population in Korea.
We examined the effects of family and home literacy environments on the vocabulary and reading abilities of 3 to 5-year-olds. In particular, SES was considered against home literacy environment. The sample consisted of 366 Korean children and their mothers. We found that the level of mother's education was related to the child's vocabulary test score. After controlling for family factors, home literacy environment score positively predicted children's performance both in vocabulary and reading tests. Magnitudes of differences between the two literacy groups (high and low home literacy environment) became larger in the children from relative lower income families. Magnitudes of differences for vocabulary and reading tests was strikingly large in the low-income group both in vocabulary and reading tests. These findings shed lights on the importance of parent education and family services for low-income families with preschool children.
The purpose of this study was to compare the financial status between Aged Households and Non-aged households. The sample obtained from 1993 KHPS, consisted of 3,425 Korean married couples including 2,915 of non-aged households and 510 aged households. Statistics employed for the analysis were frequencies percentile and t-test And Lorenz curve and Gini coefficient were used to compare the financial status of two groups. The results of this study were as follows. First financial status of aged households specially annual total income annual current income earned income and annual total expenditure were lower than those of non-aged households. Second Gini-coefficients of aged households' income and expenditure were greater than expenditure of them. Moreover Gini-coefficients of aged households' total asset and total debt were greater than those of non-aged households' However total asset of aged and non-aged households were smaller than total debt of two groups.
This study was mainly concerned with providing a basis of the development of low-income consumer education program. The purpose of this study was to investigate the level of their consumer skill and the degree of consumer problems' perception. For the purpose of this study, 480 questionnaire were distributed to the housewives in Seoul. The 320 data were analyzed by Frequency, Percentage, ANOVA, Duncan's Multiple Rang Test, Multiple Classification Analysis, and Pearson's Correlation . The major findings of this study were as follows; 1) The socio-demographic variables indicating significant relation to the level of consumer skill are income level, housewife's age , and housewife's education level. The independent influence of all the variables affecting consumer skill was analyzed. It result is in confirming the income as the most influential one. 20 The socio-demographic variables indicating significant relation to the degree of consumer problem's perception are income level, and housewife's education level. The independent influence of all the variables affecting consumer problem's perception was analyzed. It results in confirming the income as the most influential one. 3) Consumer skill level differs significantly at the 0.001 level, according toe the degree of consumer problems' perception. The higher level of consumer skill, the lower degree of consumer problems' perception. The result of this study implies that a consumer education should be given to the low-income consumers, on the basis of their consumer skill level. Further research regarding the consumer skill and problems ' perception of the low-income consumers should be conducted.
This study compared the financial status between the employed-elderly households and the unemployed-elderly households, focused on income adequacy, expenditure adequacy and net wealth adequacy. Using data from 1997 KHPS, the lower financial status of the unemployed elderly households were found. Nine measures of financial status were used : income, per capita income, income-to-needs ratio, expenditure, per capita expenditure, expenditure-to-needs ratio, net wealth, net wealth-to-income ratio and net wealth- to-expenditure ratio. The results of this study showed that unemployed elderly households had 68%~77% of income adequacy and 72%~83% of expenditure adequacy for employed elderly households. Holding for gender, age, education, earners in the household, living area and home ownership constant, although the gap was getting smaller, significant differences between the unemployed-elderly households and the employed-elderly households were persisted. The result of this study indicated that the unemployed-elderly households and the employed-elderly households can not be regarded ac homogeneous group when public policies are developed.
This study aimed to identify predictors of acculturation types among marriage migrant women at the individual and dominant society levels. To accomplish this goal, we recruited marriage migrant women from China and Vietnam, classified their acculturation types according to their scores on acculturation attitudes, and performed multinomial logistic regression on acculturation types by entering marriage migrant women's individual and dominant society level factors as covariates based on previous research. The results showed that most of the participants were classified under integration(N=376), followed by assimilation(N=66), separation(N=60) and marginalization(N=48). Lower household income, lower sense of mastery, weaker ethnic identity and lower social support predicted assimilation as compared to integration. Less education, higher household income, weaker ethnic identity, lower family satisfaction and lower social support predicted separation as compared to integration. Finally, as compared to integration, marginalization was predicted by lower sense of mastery, lower ethnic identity and lower social support. This study expands the current scholarship on acculturation by examining acculturation as an indicator of the psychosocial adaptation of immigrants and by identifying factors that predict specific acculturation types among marriage migrant women.
Objectives : This study examined the influence of socio-demographic, health-related, and oral health-related characteristics on adolescent DMFTs. Methods : The subjects in this study were 1,129 adolescents selected from the 6th national health and nutrition examination survey data. To determine the factors influencing dental caries, a regression analysis using a complex-sample generalized linear model was conducted after adjusting for confounding factors. Results : DMFTs were smaller among boys than girls, and smaller in the "13-15 age group" than in the "16-18 age group." In terms of household income, DMFTs were larger in the "lower," "lower-middle," and "upper-middle" income brackets than in the "upper" income bracket. DMFTs were smaller among adolescents with a history of smoking than those who had never smoked. Conclusions : In order to improve the oral health of adolescents, oral health-promotion programs should be provided for girls, high school students, students from low-income families, smokers, and those who consider themselves to have poor oral health.
This study examined how much support families with pre-school children receive for child care along with the types of support they receive. The paper also investigated the factors that influence the financial and social support received from government, employers and grandparents of the children. Data for this study were obtained from a questionnaire completed by mothers of pre-school children (n=641) during the spring of 2009. The data were analyzed by the following methods: $\chi^2$, t-test, ANOVA, Logit analysis, and Tobit analysis using SPSS and STATA software. The profile of support for child care showed that approximately 33 percent of families with pre-school children received free or subsidized child care from the government, 12 percent received some forms of support for child care from the parents' employers, and 26 percent received support from grandparents either financially or in the form of free child care. The results of the Logit analysis demonstrated that families with pre-school children were more likely to receive child care subsides from the government when they had a higher number of pre-school children and a lower level of family income. The significant factors that influence support from employers were mother's educational level, the number of pre-school children, and family income. The significant factors that affect support from grandparents of the children were the mother's age, the mother's employment status, the type of residence, and the family type.
