  • This study investigeted secondary math teachers' difficulties of technology in geometry class with grounded theory by Strauss and Corbin. 178 secondary math teachers attending the professional development program on technology-based geometry teaching at eight locations in January 2014, participated in this study with informed consents. Data was collected with an open-ended questionnaire survey. In line with grounded theory, open, axial and selective coding were applied to data analysis. According to the results of this study, teachers were found to experience resistance in using technology due to new learning and changes, with knowledge and awareness of technology effectively interacting to lessen such resistance. In using technology, teachers were found to go through the 'access-resistance-unaccepted use-acceptance' stages. Teachers having difficulties in using technology included the following four types: 'inaccessible, denial of acceptance, discontinuation of use, and acceptance 'These findings suggest novel perspectives towards teachers having difficulties in using technology, providing implications for teachers' professional development.

  • This study aims to analyze difficulties that pre-service elementary teachers experience in investigating the life cycle of a common cabbage butterfly in person. As difficulties they face during the process of this research, they pointed out collecting eggs, observing molting, creating environments for a breeding cage, feeding, building a breeding cage, and making butterfly specimens. Out of all the environmental difficulties related to their school fields, they pointed out a difficulty of time management most of all, followed by placing a breeding cage in the classroom and the lack of microscopes for observation. In regard to difficulties related to their evaluations on students' activities, they found it difficult to evaluate students' activity with the life cycle of an insect in the aspect of knowledge and even to set evaluation criteria. Besides, many of them responded that it would be appropriate to evaluate a research on the life cycle of an insect through a portfolio or an observation journal. In regard to difficulties in terms of teachers' knowledge, they found it difficult to understand insect molting, metamorphoses, complete metamorphoses, incomplete metamorphoses, the structure of an insect body, and how to distinguish a female insect from a male one. In regard to the application of class models, they knew it is important for students to have various experiences through direct observation, so the experience-based learning model was proper for the process of observing the life cycle of a common cabbage butterfly. However, they found it difficult for students to observe each stage of the life cycle in person.

  • Recently there has been increasing emphasis on pedagogical content knowledge (PCK) for fostering science teachers' teaching professionalism that needs to be done from teacher training courses systematically. We investigated what were the PCK factors considered in planning instruction and the difficulties encountered in implementing it by pre-service teachers. In this study, 26 sophomores at an university of education in Gyeonggi province were asked to perform teaching demonstrations using scientific instruction models. They were also requested to write reflective journals and interview. Analyses of the results revealed that many pre-service teachers considered the teaching strategies such as the instruction organization and implementation when planning instruction. They had also regard to the learners' cognitive affective aspects, whereas the pre-knowledge of them was not properly considered. Especially, the curriculum and assessment were almost disregarded. Most of the difficulties encountered in planning instruction and implementing it were appeared in terms of the teaching strategies. For example, they had difficulties in considering the characteristics of each stage presented by the instruction models when planning instruction and implementing it. The frequencies of the difficulties in implementing experiment were especially higher than those of the other PCK factors. Educational implications of these findings are discussed.

  • The objectives of this study were to explore the difficulties of high school mathematics teachers while guiding students and to examine whether the perception of difficulties varied by gender, position, and work experience. This study randomly chose 36 mathematics teachers as participants and they were living in six cities or provinces in South Korea. The results showed that teachers experienced difficulties while guiding students, in student evaluation and teaching and learning methods, in the order of magnitude. There was no statistical difference by gender, position, and work experience. Unlike the results of previous studies suggesting that mathematics content knowledge and pedagogical knowledge would help students guide students, the results of this study revealed that they had relatively little impact on student guidance.

  • This study explored the experiences and difficulties of science teachers who participated in overseas educational voluntary activities. Seven science teachers who had visited Timor-Leste participated in the study. All collected data including the teacher interview were analyzed. As a result, teachers visited Timor-Leste to fulfill social roles and to meet the expectations of others. After returning from Timor-Leste, the teachers regained their passion for teaching and gained confidence in taking on new challenges. Teachers had difficulties in conducting seminars due to the unstable social situation and lack of awareness of Timor-Leste teachers, and experienced communication limitations due to language barriers. Nevertheless, teachers cooperate with local priest to improve these limitations. In addition, teachers supplemented the limitations caused by the non-establishment of the curriculum through the evaluation meeting. In order to improve teaching expertise and promote active participation of Timor-Leste teachers, the seminar method was modified. The experience of volunteering in Timor-Leste made teachers think about the importance of cooperation and the necessity of education. Based on the above results, we discussed ways to activate voluntary service.
