  • This study was investigated for searching a cause of flashover failure of polymer insulator and preparing countermeasures. Hydrophobicity, microstructure and chemical structural change of polymer weathershed were studied by polymer characterization methods. In addition, the electrical properties such as power frequency dry flashover voltage/impulse voltage tests, contamination characteristics were carried out. The hydrophobicity of polymer weathershed was decreased significantly and cracks were observed on the surface. Also, the electrical characteristics did not satisfy the KEPCO specification. The failed polymer insulators showed the more leakage current than 4 years service-aged ones. From the result, it can be concluded that the flashover failure of polymer insulator was attributed to the surface aging and severe contamination.

  • Silicone rubber is being used for the housing material of outdoor high voltage insulators such as composite insulator, bushing, surge arrestor and cable terminator because of good tracking and erosion resistance, good hydrophobicity and recovery of hydrophobicity and chemical stability. But, the leakge current occurs on surface of the composite polymeric insulation materials when the insulator is used for a long time with severe contaminative condition and it can lead the contamination flashover. So the leakage current is important to estimate the condition of the silicone rubber surface. In this paper, aging characteristics of silicone rubber used for outdoor insulation have been hydrophobicity of silicone rubber in salt fog chamber with average leakage current monitoring for observing the transformation of surface degradation properties of silicone rubber with different ATH(alumina trihydrate, A1$_2$O$_3$$.$3H$_2$O) filler contents. The experimental results show that a higher peak leakage current and to raise a long time for tracking with increasing amount of ATH by the salt fog and heat recycle ageing.

  • Robust and hydrophobic tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) based silica aerogel was synthesized by supercritical alcohol drying with surface modification using the phenyl based silica co-precursor (PTMS). The aerogels were synthesized by hydrolysis and polycondensation reaction in which TEOS and PTMS in methanol were reacted together in presence of oxalic acid and ammonium hydroxide as the catalysts. Supercritical alcohol dried PTMS/TEOS composite silica aerogel were examined for the hydrophobicity, chemical interaction, surface morphology, and textural characteristics. The hydrophobic silica-based aerogels were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy to investigate the presence of functional groups and chemical bonds. The prepared silica demonstrates hydrophobicity (76°-149°), a high specific surface area (398 ㎡/g to 739 ㎡/g). The present investigation provides a simple approach to synthesize hydrophobic and thermally stable silica aerogels.

  • Nanocatalysts are usually used in the synthesis of petrochemical products, fine chemicals, biofuel production, and automotive exhaust catalysis. Due to high activity and stability, recyclability, and cost-effectiveness, nanocatalysts are a key area in green chemistry. On the other hand, water as a common by-product or undesired element in a range of nanocatalyzed processes may be promoting the deactivation of catalytic systems. The advancement in the field of hydrophobicity in nanocatalysis could relatively solves these problems and improves the efficiency and recyclability of nanocatalysts. Some recent developments in the synthesis of novel nanocatalysts with tunable hydrophilic-hydrophobic character have been reviewed in this article and followed by highlighting their use in catalyzing several processes such as glycerolysis, Fenton, oxidation, reduction, ketalization, and hydrodesulfurization. Zeolites, carbon materials, modified silicas, surfactant-ligands, and polymers are the basic components in the controlling hydrophobicity of new nanocatalysts. Various characterization methods such as N2 adsorption-desorption, scanning and transmission electron microscopy, and contact angle measurement are critical in the understanding of hydrophobicity of materials. Also, in this review, it has been shown that how the hydrophobicity of nanocatalyst is affected by its structure, textural properties, and surface acidity, and discuss the important factors in designing catalysts with high efficiency and recyclability. It is useful for chemists and chemical engineers who are concerned with designing novel types of nanocatalysts with high activity and recyclability for environmentally friendly applications.

  • Nanoporous silica aerogels with various surface modifiers were prepared by ambient drying process. Tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS) were used a raw material. Ambient drying process for various surface modifier was studied in the point of view of a crack-free monolith and thin films and low cost. Various kinds of surface modifiers like as hexamethyldisilazane (HMDSZ), trimethlychlorosilane (TMCS), methlytriethoxylsilane (MTES), and methlytrimethoxysilane (MTMS) were studied in order to enhance hydrophobicity for the silica aerogel. Surface modified aerogels were evaluated by FT-IR, TG, BET, SEM and wetting angle measurement. Homogeneous and crack-free aerogels were obtained by modifying the HMDSZ and the TMCS. However silica xerogel was obtained when modified with MTMS, MTES.

  • Wetting phenomena have been heavily studied for industrial and academic researches especially tuning the wettability between hydrophilicity and hydrophobicity. Wicking through the surface texture is shown on superhydrophilic surface while rolling (or dewetting) on the patterns of superhydrophobic surface. These wetting phenomena are known to be affected by surface wettability determined with physical surface patterns as well as chemical composition of surface layer. In this research, we introduce a method to control the wettability of a thin C-SiOx film from hydrophobic to hydrophilic using a mixture gas of HMDSO/$O_2$ by plasma polymerization with rf-CVD (radio frequency-Chemical Vapor Deposition). Wettability was finely controlled by changing the ratio of HMDSO/$O_2$. Hydrophilicity increased as the ratio decreased, while hydrophobicity was enhanced by the ratio. Moreover, fine control from superhydrophilicity to superhydrophobicity was achieved by C-SiOx coating on the Si wafer with prepatterns of submicron-sized pillar array formed by $CF_4$ plasma etching.

  • In this paper, we have investigated the degradation of shed materials of outdoor insulators by UV-radiation by using corona-charging and XPS analysis. The accumulated charges on polymeric surface having intrinsic hydrophobic property have a negative impact on retaining its hydrophobicity. Therefore, shorter decay times of surface charges are preferred. The surface voltage decay on UV-treated silicone rubber and EPDM show a different decay trend with UV treated time. From the XPS analysis, the oxidized groups of silica-like structure in silicone rubber increase with UV treatment time. For EPDM, the oxidized carbon groups of C=O, O=C-O increase as elapse of UV radiation time. These oxidized surface for each material have different electrostatic characteristics, so deposited charges may be expected to have different impacts on their surface hydrophobicity. The degradation mechanism based on our results is discussed.

  • This work presents an experiment study to evaluate the nanoparticle adhesion and surface hydrophobicity characteristics of Teflon-polyurethane top coat depending on the number of multi-wall carbon nanotube (MWCNT) coatings, which is a carbon-based hydrophobic particle. In order to measure the adhesion between the nanoparticles and the top coat, adhesion pull-off test was performed with different MWCNT oxidation times. Static contact angle and roughness measurements were carried out to characterize the surface hydrophobic behavior. Through the roughness evaluation, it was confirmed that the carbon nanotubes were wetted in the Teflon-polyurethane top coat, and the degree carbon nanotube wetting was confirmed through a USB-microscope. As a result, it was found that the larger the degree of wetting, the better the adhesion. From the experimental results, as the hydrophobicity of Teflon-polyurethane increased, the adhesive propertydecreased with the number of coatings. It was possible to improve the adhesive force and determine the number of coatings of carbon nanotubes with optimized hydrophobicity.

  • The polymer insulators which are installed on outdoor have a great advantage than porcelain and 71ass, due to suppression of leakage current, light weight, low cost, etc. It needs variable evaluation methods for application of these insulators on service. The analysis of measuring leakage current is useful for ageing diagnosis because of monitoring in real-time. In this paper, we look over the recovery of hydrophobicity of silicone rubber in mini salt-fog chamber with leakage current monitoring. also, we understand the relation of between hydrophobicity and leakage current and discuss on method of leakage current monitoring.
