  • Sam-jon-bul or Three Buddha Image Carved on rock surface which is called Sam-jon-bul in Taean, state-designated national treasure No. 307, made in Baek-je Period, has two Buddha images and one Bodhisattva. The detached part of the Sam-jon-bul from wall rock has been attached through conservation treatment in 1995. Few study has been done on weathering condition of petrological point of view and damage while the surface of the Sam-jon-bul has been under serious weathering (relief) of loosing stone particles, and discoloration. In this study, it was made weathering damage maps, which show physical property of the material and state of damage of Sam-jon-bul, in order to dialogize how far the weathering has been done. It has been considered continuing on-site monitoring as necessity when Sam-jon-bul was covered with dew, which may have been caused by change in weather in and out of the protect building. It is necessary to set up detailed conservation plan for it by doing regular diagnosis on the influence of the protect building and weathering of Sam-jon-bul.

  • This study deals with the characterizing and the application like as insulation materials in the joint part in concrete surface layer and waterproofing sheet especially for roof slabs. Using steel materials and butil-rubber tape to band waterproofing sheet and concrete surface together before this waterproofing system will be applied. It can be expected to both the curability and the watertightness by coating poly-urethane 2 or 3 times with sheet surface. Therefore this waterproofing system can be possible to protect water without the damage when vapor is going out from concrete and without air pockets because of the difference temperature inside and out. This system particularly consists of air bents and elastic waterproofing sheet considering the physical damage while water can cause purely physical damage. This system is one of the most efficient ways of waterproofing system without air pocket.

  • To clarify the characteristics of surface damage due to fretting in press-fitted shaft, experimental methods were applied to small scale specimen with different bending load condition. Fatigue tests and interrupted fatigue tests of press-fitted specimen were carried out by rotate bending fatigue test. Macroscopic and microscopic characteristics were examined using scanning electron microscope (SEM), optical microscope or profilometer. It is found that small fatigue cracks are nucleated early in life regardless of bending stress, and thus the most portion of fatigue life on press fits can be considered to be crack propagation process. Most of surface cracks are initiated near the contact edge, and multiple cracks are nucleated and interconnected. Furthermore, the fretting wear rates at the contact edge are increased rapidly at the initial stage of total fatigue life. It is thus suggested that the fatigue crack nucleation and propagation process is strongly related to the evolution of surface profile by fretting wear in press fits.

  • In order to investigate the thermal cracking of the rolling stock brake disc, finite element analysis was conducted on the temperature distribution and thermal stress of the disc during braking. In case of initial vehicle speed of 90, 106, 120km/h, the maximum temperature on the disk surface due to braking was $135.9^{\circ}C,\;157.9^{\circ}C,\;178.7^{\circ}C$, respectively. And, the maximum von-Mises stress at the disc surface was 42.4, 50.3, 57.1MPa at a speed of 90, 105, 120km/h, respectively, indicating that the stress increases with an increment in the speed. Damage fraction due to braking during one year running on the Seoul - Busan line was determined as 14.6%.

  • The damage of first wall material in fusion reactor due to the bubbles caused by plasma has been studied by introducing a relation between the von Mises equivalent stress and the temperature field. The locations and shapes of the bubbles and the synergetic effect between the different bubbles under steady operational conditions have been studied using the finite elements method. Under transient heat loads, plastic deformations have been found to occur, and are significantly enhanced by the presence of the bubbles. The calculated concentration locations of von Mises equivalent stress are well consistent with the observed crack positions of the tungsten surface in many test experiments. Our simulations show that the damage of the bubbles is not severe enough to lead to catastrophic failure of the tungsten armor; however, it can cause local and gradual detachment of tungsten surface, which provides a reasonable explanation for the observed pits and rough or hairy surface morphology etc. Considering the transient heat loads, the lower bound of the security thickness of the tungsten tile is estimated to be greater than 2 mm.

  • Saw damage of crystalline silicon wafer is unavoidable factor. Usually, alkali treatment for removing the damage has been carried out as the saw damage removal (SDR) process for priming the alkali texture. It usually takes lots of time and energy to remove the sawed damages for solar grade crystalline silicon wafers We implemented two different mixed acidic solution treatments to obtain the improved surface structure of silicon wafer without much sacrifice of the silicon wafer thickness. At the first step, the silicon wafer was dipped into the mixed acidic solution of $HF:HNO_3$=1:2 ration for polished surface and at the second step, it was dipped into the diluted mixed acidic solution of $HF:HNO_3:H_2O$=7:3:10 ratio for porous structure. This double treatment to the silicon wafer brought lower reflectance (25% to 6%) and longer carrier lifetime ($0.15\;{\mu}s$ to $0.39\;{\mu}s$) comparing to the bare poly-crystalline silicon wafer. With optimizing the concentration ratio and the dilution ratio, we can not only effectively substitute the time consuming process of SDR to some extent but also skip plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) process. Moreover, to conduct alkali texture for pyramidal structure on silicon wafer surface, we can use only nitric acid rich solution of the mixed acidic solution treatment instead of implementing SDR.

  • Existing reinforced concrete frame buildings designed for only gravity loads have been seismically vulnerable due to their inadequate column detailing. The seismic vulnerabilities can be mitigated by the application of a column retrofit technique, which combines high-strength near surface mounted bars with a fiber reinforced polymer wrapping system. This study presents the full-scale shaker testing of a non-ductile frame structure retrofitted using the combined retrofit system. The full-scale dynamic testing was performed to measure realistic dynamic responses and to investigate the effectiveness of the retrofit system through the comparison of the measured responses between as-built and retrofitted test frames. Experimental results demonstrated that the retrofit system reduced the dynamic responses without any significant damage on the columns because it improved flexural, shear and lap-splice resisting capacities. In addition, the retrofit system contributed to changing a damage mechanism from a soft-story mechanism (column-sidesway mechanism) to a mixed-damage mechanism, which was commonly found in reinforced concrete buildings with strong-column weak-beam system.

  • This study investigated the damage to the specimen due to liquid droplet impingement erosion corrosion, which improved the corrosion resistance and durability via hard anodization of 5083-H321 aluminum alloy, which is widely used for small ships and marine structures. The experiment combined liquid droplet impingement erosion and electrochemical equipment with the flow rates in natural seawater solution. Subsequently, Tafel extrapolation of polarization curves was performed to evaluate damage due to the liquid droplet impingement erosion corrosion. The damaged surface was observed using a 3D microscope and a scanning electron microscope. The degree of pitting damage was measured using the Image J program, and the surface hardness was measured using the micro-Vickers hardness tester. The corrosion current density, area, depth, and ratio of the damaged areas increased with the increase in flow rate. The grain size of the damaged area at a flow rate of 20 m s-1 showed fewer and minor differences in height, and a smooth curved shape. The hardness of the damaged surface tended to decrease with increase in flow rate.

  • A wet type scrubber for merchant vessel uses super austenitic stainless steels with pitting resistance equivalent number (PREN) of 40 or higher for operation in a harsh corrosive environment. However, it is expensive due to a high nickel content. Thus, electrochemical behavior and cavitation erosion characteristics of UNS S32750 as an alternative material were investigated. Microstructure analysis revealed fractions of ferritic and austenitic phases of 48% and 52%, respectively, confirming the existence of ferritic matrix and austenitic island. Potentiodynamic polarization test revealed damage at the interface of the two phases because of galvanic corrosion due to different chemical compositions of ferritic and austenitic phases. After a cavitation test, a compressive residual stress was formed on the material surface due to impact pressure of cavity. Surface hardness was improved by water cavitation peening effect. Hardness value was the highest at 30 ㎛ amplitude. Scanning electron microscopy revealed wave patterns due to plastic deformation caused by impact pressure of the cavity. The depth of surface damage increased with amplitude. Cavitation test revealed larger damage caused by erosion in the ferritic phase due to brittle fracture derived from different strain rate sensitivity index of FCC and BCC structures.
