  • The purpose of this study is to explore the direction of home economics education and provide specific implications to help adolescents develop relationship competency. For this purpose, the contents of Korea's character education and UK's relationships education curriculum were analyzed, and the results are as follows. Character education in Korea focused on character education values such as responsibility, respect, consideration, and communication throughout the public education system. These contents were largely consistent with the learning content elements for cultivating relationship-competency in home economics education. UK's relationships education at the primary and secondary levels were similar to that of home economics education in middle school in Korea in its goals and learning contents for understanding and maintaining healthy relationships. However, differences existed in areas of safe relationships, setting boundaries with others, comprehensiveness of sex education content, rights to refuse sex education, and education content based on equal rights. Based on these results, this study concludes that the concept of education on relationships needs to be defined, the composition of educational content should be systematically developed, and further research on the development of teaching and learning methods and learning programs that can elicit and internalize students' attitudes and changes is needed. In addition, insights were gained regarding additional educational contents and considerations to take into account.

  • This study is to identify the awareness and performance of hand washing according to the presence of Medical care onboard of Seafarers and provide basic data of education on hand washing that can be practically applied. 118 Seafarers were the study subjects and we distributed to those who agreed to participate in the study to carry out survey using questionnaire. The results showed that the average number of hand washing per day was 1~4 times (70 students, 59.3%). In the difference in hand washing perception according to the medical care board, statistically significant differences were found in all items except 'it needs to be completely dried after hand washing'(p<0.05). The difference in hand washing performance according to in-flight medical care was found to be statistically significant in all items except 'hand washing after coughing' and 'hand washing after touching money', 'before eating food such as drinks while working' and 'hand washing before patient contact' (p<0.05). The correlation between awareness and performance of hand washing showed that if awareness of hand washing is high, its performance is increased, too. We try to provide basic data of education on hand washing that can improve awareness and performance on hand washing based on the results of this study.

  • It has been 7 months since medical students boycotted classes and resident doctors left hospitals in protest against the government's policy to increase the number of doctors. As education was suspended and services at university hospitals reduced, medical gaps in medical care have emerged. As a result, concerns are growing about a potential crisis in the healthcare system. The reason for the doctors' strong opposition to the policy lies in several issues that need improvement in the government's decision-making process. By reviewing these issues, we look forward to drawing lessons for making better policy decisions in the future. First, because the evidence supporting policy decisions has various characteristics and scopes, it is important to thoroughly discuss these grounds with stakeholders. Second, the discussion structure for reviewing evidence and making decisions should consist of members capable of fully negotiating diverse perspectives and should be operated through a fair and transparent process. If these steps are not properly implemented, conflicts surrounding the evidence could escalate, thereby lowering trust in the government. When stakeholders lose trust in the government, the social costs of implementing policies may rise, and policy efficiency may decline. Therefore, it is time to restructure the decision-making system in the direction of reducing potential conflicts that may arise during the future policy implementation process and increasing trust in the government.

  • Purpose: This study examined the status and needs of school-based nutritional education programs for reducing sugars intake in elementary schools. Methods: A total of 230 elementary nutrition teachers participated in this study through an online survey in July 2017. Results: Approximately one-third of the schools conducted nutrition education on reducing sugars intake as a main topic. The most frequent educated grade and education period were $4^{th}$ and $3^{rd}$ grade, and once a year. Most of the nutrition teachers answered that nutrition education related to reducing sugars intake for children was necessary. The nutrition teachers answered that first graders were the recipients in most need of nutrition education for reducing sugars but, realistically, third graders were the most suitable for nutrition education. The appropriate education topics were limited to the lower grades, such as sugars consumption related health problems, foods containing high sugars, and behaviors to reduce sugars intake; however, a wider variety of topics were selected for the upper grades. The experiment was considered to be an effective educational method for both the lower and upper grades. The most appropriate nutrition education media appeared to be a mock-up in the lower grades, and an experiment kit in the upper grades. Games and videos were highly considered to be effective media to educate students in reducing sugars consumption by voluntary participation in free time in the classroom in both the lower and upper grades. Conclusion: Nutrition education programs focusing on sugars intake reduction were conducted in some elementary schools, but the training time was short and the types of activities were limited. The perception and demand for nutrition education was very high. Therefore, the development and dissemination of elementary school-based nutritional education programs for sugars intake reduction is urgently needed. Moreover, to develop an effective nutrition education program, the education environment and demand in the field should be fully considered.

Reviewing the literatures of nursing center activities. Nursing centers which were administered by a professional nurse are an ideal site for faculty and student practices. With the use of nursing models of health. professional nurses in nursing centers diagnose and treat human responses to potential and actual health problems and offer holistic, client-centered health service. In nursing centers professional nursing services include health education, health promotion, and health-related research. A nursing center is comprised of the advisory and exacutive commitee; the advisory commitee serves consultants and links community needs to the nursing center, while the director of the exacutive commitee identifies the potential resources to generate funds, support, and facilitate the activities of staffs in a nursing center. Nursing centers mobilize various financal resources for reimbursement of services from college and insurance companies, collect minimum service fees from the client, and further collect fees for providing programs to community groups, this also includes membership fees, and donations. The services provided by nursing centers focus on services related to primary prevention, health maintenance & health promotion, direct nursing care for acute & chronic diseases, and holistic care for actual and potential health problems. The client satisfaction for the services was high. Students also showed positive reponses for their clinical experiences and independent working conditions. 2. The degree of knowledge, attitudes, and practices for breast cancer. and an individual's intention to participate in the BSEE program. The subjects of this study were 308 females in K-city in the Republic of Korea. Data were collected using a self-administered questionnaire. The mean age of the respondents was 35.0 years old. Those who already participated in the BSEE were 64.9%, and those who had support and encouragement to practice BSE from significant others were 25.1 %. Clients intent to participate in the BSEE were 37.0%. The mean score of knowledge(2.4 out of 5 points) and practices(1.8 out of 5 points) for breast cancer were quite low, but the mean score of attitudes was relatively positive04.5 out of 20 point) for breast cancer. Those who already had BSEE showed significantly high scores in knowledge(t=6.48, p<0.01), attitudes (t=10.54, p<0.01). and practices(t=57.07, p<0.001) for breast cancer than those who had not participated in the BSEE. In all age groups no intention to participate in the BSEE was higher than who the intention to participate. These findings suggest some strategies should be developed to increase the awareness of breast cancer's early detection.

  • The paper investigates X-project, in which the public was invited to participate in a national R&D project, examines how X-project attracted the public's attention and involved them in a national R&D project, and discusses the significance and limitations of X-project. X-project was executed by a 12 citizen-led committee, financially supported by the Ministry of Science, ICT, and Future Planning, and backed by the Science and Technology Policy Institute. People raised 6,212 questions that reflected the severe needs they experienced in their daily lives through the online and offline platforms of X-project. In addition, the committee members, scholars, experts, government officials, and citizens gathered together to select the fifty most provocative and novel of the questions raised by the public, and invited public participation to answer the questions in innovative ways. 310 research teams including professional researchers from universities and institutes, high-school students, lay persons, and corporate workers applied for X-project, and 54 of these teams were finally selected to receive funding from the government. Through planning and conducting X-project, as well as interviewing and surveying the participants in X-project and non-participants, we found that there was an enormous social consensus on the necessity of public participatory national R&D projects. People asserted that science and technology should put a greater focus on solving social problems and satisfying public needs. We also confirmed that the public could take part in national R&D projects. Most of all, we found that the questions raised by the public were very challenging, novel, and complex, and thus researchers need break-through approaches to address them. It can be also argued that through experiencing the X-project citizens can regard themselves as ones who are not only recipients of the benefits of the development of science and technology, but also contributors of the development of them. We finally argue that there are some limitations to X-project in terms of how to provide diverse incentives that attract more participation, how to develop the process in which people got involved in the project in more easy ways, and how to create new ways for lay persons and professional researchers to cooperate in solving social problems.
