Finite difference method using not general SSG(standard staggered grid) but RSG(rotated staggered grid) was applied to simulation of elastic wave propagation. Special free surface boundary condition such as imaging method is needed in finite difference method using SSG in elastic wave propagation but free surface boundary condition in finite difference method using RSG is easily solved with adding air layer. Recently PML(Perfectly Matched layer) is widely used to eliminate artificial reflection waves from finite boundary because of its' greate efficiency. Absorbing ability of CPML(convolutional Perfectly Matched Layer) that is more efficient than that of PML was applied to FDM using RSG in this study. The results of CPML eliminated artificial boundary waves very effectively in FDM using RSG in being compared with that of Cerjan's absorbing method.

Frequency absorbing characteristic and energy absorbing ability in CPML layer were investigated and CPML eliminated artificial boundary waves very effectively in FDM using RSG in being compared with that of Cerjan's absorbing method. CPML method also diminished amplitude of waves in boundary layer of solid-liquid model very well.
Interpretation of time-domain electromagnetic (TEM) data has been made mostly based on one-dimensional (1-D) inversion scheme in Korea. A proper interpretation of TEM data should employ 3-D TEM forward and inverse modeling algorithms. This study developed a 3-D TEM modeling algorithm using a finite difference time-domain (FDTD) method with staggered grid. In numerically solving Maxwell equations, fictitious displacement current is included based on an explicit FDTD method using a central difference approximation scheme. The developed modeling algorithm simulated a small-coil source configuration to be verified against analytic solutions for homogeneous half-space models. Further, TEM responses for a 3-D anomaly are modeled and analyzed. We expect that it will contribute greatly to the precise interpretation of TEM data.

In this paper, we present a finite difference method for the implementation of the rotation of a circular cylinder in the incompressible flow field by solving the two-dimensional unsteady Navier-Stokes equations. The approach is to use staggered grid method so that the accuracy and order of convergence of the associated algorithms can be maintained. The proposed method is easy to be implemented and is effective. A set of simulations for the flow dynamics is provided to show the computational results.
We simulate the propagation of earthquake waves in the continental margin of Antarctica using the elastic wave modeling algorithm, which is modified to be suitable for acoustic-elastic coupled media and earthquake source. To simulate the various types of earthquake source, the staggered-grid finite-difference method, which is composed of velocity-stress formulae, can be more appropriate to use than the conventional, displacement-based, finite-difference method. We simulate the elastic wave propagation generated by earthquakes combining 3D staggered-grid finite-difference algorithm composed of displacement-velocity-stress formulae with double couple mechanisms for earthquake source. Through numerical tests for left-lateral strike-slip fault, normal fault and reverse fault, we could confirm that the first arrival of P waves at the surface is in a good agreement with the theoretically-predicted results based on the focal mechanism of an earthquake. Numerical results for a model made after the subduction zone in the continental margin of Antarctica showed that earthquake waves, generated by the reverse fault and propagating through the continental crust, the oceanic crust and the ocean, are accurately described.

We present a imaging method of seismic sources by time reversal propagation of seismic waves. Time-reversal wave propagation is actively used in medical imaging, non destructive testing and waveform tomography. Time-reversal wave propagation is based on the time-reversal invariance and the spatial reciprocity of the wave equation. A signal is recorded by an array of receivers, time-reversed and then back-propagated into the medium. The time-reversed signal propagates back into the same medium and the energy refocuses back at the source location. The increasing power of computers and numerical methods makes it possible to simulate more accurately the propagation of seismic waves in heterogenous media. In this work, a staggered-grid finite-difference solution of the elastic wave equation is employed for the wave propagation simulation. With numerical experiments, we show that the time-reversal imaging will enable us to explore the spatio-temporal history of complex earthquake.
A computer code that is based on the Pseudo-spectral finite difference algorithm using staggered grid is developed for the wave propagation modeling in the time domain. The advantage of a finite difference approximation is that any geometrically complicated media can be modeled. Staggered grids are advantageous as it provides much more accuracy than using a regular grid. Pseudo-spectral methods are those that evaluate spatial derivatives by multiplying a wavenumber by the Fourier transform of a pressure wave-field and performing the inverse Fourier transform. This method is very stable and reduces memory and the number of computations. The synthetic results by this algorithm agree with the analytic solution in the infinite and half space. The time domain modeling was implemented in various models. such as half-space. Pekeris waveguide, and range dependent environment. The snapshots showing the total wave-field reveals the Propagation characteristic or the acoustic waves through the complex ocean environment.
Recently many sinkholes have appeared in urban areas of Korea, threatening public safety. To predict the occurrence of sinkholes, it is necessary to investigate the existence of cavity under urban roads. Ground-penetrating radar (GPR) has been recognized as an effective means for detecting underground cavity in urban areas. In order to improve the understanding of the governing physical processes associated with GPR wave propagation, and interpret underground cavity effectively, a theoretical approach using numerical modeling is required. We have developed an algorithm employing a three-dimensional (3D) staggered-grid finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method. This approach allows us to model the full electromagnetic wavefield associated with GPR surveys. We examined the GPR response for a simple cavity model, and the modeling results showed that our 3D FDTD modeling algorithm is useful to assess the underground cavity under urban roads.

We have developed a locally variable time-step scheme matching with discontinuous grids in the flute-difference method for the efficient simulation of seismic wave propagation. The first-order velocity-stress formulations are used to obtain the spatial derivatives using finite-difference operators on a staggered grid. A three-times coarser grid in the high-velocity region compared with the grid in the low-velocity region is used to avoid spatial oversampling. Temporal steps corresponding to the spatial sampling ratio between both regions are determined based on proper stability criteria. The wavefield in the margin of the region with smaller time-step are linearly interpolated in time using the values calculated in the region with larger one. The accuracy of the proposed scheme is tested through comparisons with analytic solutions and conventional finite-difference scheme with constant grid spacing and time step. The use of the locally variable time-step scheme with discontinuous grids results in remarkable saving of the computation time and memory requirement with dependency of the efficiency on the simulation model. This implies that ground motion for a realistic velocity structures including near-surface sediments can be modeled to high frequency (several Hz) without requiring severe computer memory
A finite difference method for calculating turbulent flow and surface wave fields around a ship model is evaluated through the comparison with the experimental data of a Series 60 $C_B$=0.6 ship model. The method solves the Reynolds-averaged Navior-Stokes Equations using the non-staggered grid system, the four-stage Runge-Kutta scheme for the temporal integration of governing equations and the Bladwin-Lomax model for the turbulence closure. The free surface waves are captured by solving the equation of the kinematic free-surface condition using the Lax-Wendroff scheme and free-surface conforming grids are generated at each time step so that one of the grid surfaces coincides always with the free surface. The computational results show an overall close agreement with the experimental data and verify that the present method can simulate well the turbulent boundary layers and wakes as well as the free-surface waves.
