This paper describes a simplified design method of stabilizing piles based on an experimental tests and an analytical study which can take into account the safety factor of slope and pile spacing. The nonlinear characteristics of the soil-pile interaction for stabilizing piles are modeled by using load transfer method. The interaction factors due to pile spacing and cap rigidity were estimated by using a three dimensional nonlinear finite element approach and laboratory tests. Based on the results obtained, the interaction factors are proposed quantitatively for one-row pile groups with spacing-to-diameter ratios varying far 2.5 to 7.0. The Bishop's simplified method of slope stability analysis is extended to incorporate the soil-pile interaction and determine the safety factor of the reinforced slope. Through the comparative study, it is found that the prediction by present approach is in relatively good agreement with the results of centrifuge tests and field tests and three dimensional finite element analyses.

To analyze an infinite slope that is reinforced with stabilizing piles, the forces on the stabilizing pile were estimated by the theory of plastic deformation and the theory of plastic flow and the effects of diverse factors on the factor of safety of an infinite slope were investigated. According to the results of the analyses, the factor of the safety of the slope reinforced with stabilized piles were increased tremendously and the factor of safety decreased as the center to center distance of the stabilizing pile increased. The effect of the existence of seepage of the infinite slope with stabilizing piles on the factor of safety appears to be insignificant. Considering the formulated factor of safety of an infinite slope with stabilizing piles, the width and length of the element of the infinite slope and force on the stabilizing pile influence the factor of safety of the infinite slope with a stabilizing pile including the soil strength parameter, inclination of the slope and depth of the slope, which are important for calculating the factor of safety of a non-reinforced infinite slope. The factor of safety of an infinite slope with stabilizing piles derived from the theory of plastic deformation were increased significantly with the internal friction angle of the soil, and the minimum and the maximum factor of safety under the conditions considered in this study were 13.7 and 65.6, respectively. As the diameter of the stabilizing pile increased, the forces on the stabilizing pile also increased but the factor of safety of the infinite slope with stabilizing piles decreased due to the effects of the width and the length of the element of the infinite slope. The factor of safety of the infinite slope with stabilizing piles derived from plastic flow were much larger than that of the non-reinforced infinite slope and the factor safety of the infinite slope with a stabilizing pile increased with increasing product of the flow velocity and plastic viscosity ( ) and the factor of safety of the infinite slope with stabilizing piles decreased with increasing center to center distance of the pile.

This paper describes a new vibration-suppression technique for flexible cantilevered structures by using a pipe containing an internal flow. The stability and dynamic response are analyzed based on the finite element method. The flutter limit and optimum stabilizing fluid velocity are determined in root locus diagrams. The impulse responses of the system are studied by the mode superposition method to observe the damping rate of the motion. The stabilizing effect of an internal flow is demonstrated by impulse responses of the structures with and without an material damping. It is found that the response of the pipe with flow of liquid has a larger effect of, stabilizing than that with flow of gas.
This paper presents progressive fracture analysis of concrete using boundary element method and its stabilizing technique. To determine ultimate strength and to predict nonlinear behavior of concrete during progressive crack growth, the modelling of fracture process zone is done based on Dugdale-Barenblatt model with linear tension-softening curve. We regulate displacement and traction boundary integral equation of solids including crack boundary and analyze progressive fracture of concrete beam and compact tension specimen. Also a numerical technique which considers the growth of stress-free crack of concrete during the analysis and removes snapback of postpeak behavior is proposed.

We investigate the austenite stability in nanocrystalline Fe-7%Mn-X%Mo (X = 0, 1, and 2) alloys fabricated by spark plasma sintering. Mo is known as a ferrite stabilizing element, whereas Mn is an austenite stabilizing element, and many studies have focused on the effect of Mn addition on austenite stability. Herein, the volume fraction of austenite in nanocrystalline Fe-7%Mn alloys with different Mo contents is measured using X-ray diffraction. Using a disk compressive test, austenite in Fe-Mn-Mo alloys is confirmed to transform into strain-induced martensite during plastic deformation by a disk d. The variation in austenite stability in response to the addition of Mo is quantitatively evaluated by comparing the k-parameters of the kinetic equation for the strain-induced martensite transformation.
In this paper, some novel discrete formulations for stabilizing the mixed finite element method Q1-Q0 (bilinear velocity and constant pressure approximations) are introduced and discussed for the generalized Stokes problem. These are based on stabilizing discontinuous pressure approximations via local jump operators. The developing idea consists in a reduction of terms in the local jump formulation, introduced earlier, in such a way that stability and convergence properties are preserved. The computer implementation aspects and numerical evaluation of these stabilized discrete formulations are also considered. For illustrating the numerical performance of the proposed approaches and comparing the three versions of the local jump methods alongside with the global jump setting, some obtained results for two test generalized Stokes problems are presented. Numerical tests confirm the stability and accuracy characteristics of the resulting approximations.
Numerical stud of an oscillating body in incompressible fluid is performed. Stabilized finite element method comprising of Streamline-Upwind/Petrov-Galerkin (SUPG) and Pressure-Stabilizing/Petrov-Galerkin (PSPG) formulations of linear triangular elements was employed to solve 2D incompressible Navier-Stokes equations whereas the motion of the body was considered by incorporating the arbitrary Langrangian-Eulerian(ALE) formulation. An algebraic moving mesh strategy is utilized for obtaining body conforming mesh deformation at each time step. Two tests cases, namely motion of a circular cylinder and of an airfoil in incompressible flow were analyzed. The model is first validated against the stationary cases and then the capability to handle moving boundaries is demonstrated.

Austenitic stainless steel is widely used in various industries due to its excellent corrosion resistance. However, Cr carbides precipitation along the grain boundaries after heat treatment or welding may develop Cr depleted zone, which acts as a preferential site for intergranular corrosion attack. To resolve this, carbon stabilizing element such as Ti or Nb are added to suppress formation of Cr carbides. However, there are few reports on corrosion characteristics under seawater environment of the stabilized stainless steel. This study investigated the effects of alloying contents on the electrochemical characteristics in seawater of stainless steel containing stabilizing element(Ti and Nb). To achieve this, the changes on the microstructure due to alloying were observed with microscope, and the electrochemical characteristics were determined by measurement of natural potential and potentiodynamic polarization experiments. The microscopic observation revealed that all specimens had inclusions other than the austenite matrix phase due to the addition of alloying elements. Such inclusions are considered to have different electrochemical characteristics from those of the matrix, and thus a clear distinction was found according to the type of stabilizers and the contents. The results of this study suggest that it is important to consider the effects of alloying contents on the electrochemical characteristics in seawater with the addition of Ti or Nb into austenitic stainless steel.

We survey a recently developed immersed finite element method (IFEM) for the interface problems. The IFEM uses structured grids such as uniform grids, even if the interface is a smooth curve. Instead of fitting the curved interface, the bases are modified so that they satisfy the jump conditions along the interface. The early versions of IFEM [1, 2] were suboptimal in convergence order [3]. Later, the consistency terms were added to the bilinear forms [4, 5], thus the scheme became optimal and the error estimates were proven. For elasticity problems with interfaces, we modify the Crouzeix-Raviart based element to satisfy the traction conditions along the interface [6], but the consistency terms are not needed. To satisfy the Korn's inequality, we add the stabilizing terms to the bilinear form. The optimal error estimate was shown for a triangular grid. Lastly, we describe the multigrid algorithms for the discretized system arising from IFEM. The prolongation operators are designed so that the prolongated function satisfy the flux continuity condition along the interface. The W-cycle convergence was proved, and the number of V-cycle is independent of the mesh size.

Dysfunction of the anterior and dorsal muscles of the trunk have been studied in relation to low back pain of many years. Many muscles of the trunk are capable of contributing to the stabilization and protection of the lumbar spine, recent evidence has suggested that transversus abdominis may be critically involved and has been the focus of rehabilitation. The delay in onset of contraction of trunk muscles associated with movement of the upper or lower limb in patients with low back pain indicates a significant deficit in the automatic motor command for control of disturbance to the spine. The function of transversus abdominis has been largely ignored in the evaluation of spinal stabilization and protection. The most essential stabilizing muscles for the lumbar column are the transversus abdominis and the multifidus. Sling exercise therapy(SET) concept consists of a system of diagnosis and treatment. The system of diagnosis involves testing the muscle's tolerance through progressive loading in open and close kinetic chains. The SET system contains elements such as relaxation, increasing the range of movement, traction, training the stabilizing musculature, sensorimotor exercises, training in open and close kinetic chains, dynamic training of the mobilizing musculature, cardiovasc+ular exercises, group exercise, personal exercise at home. Sensorimotor training is an essential element of the SET concept. The emphasis is on closed kinetic chain exercises on an unstable surface, thereby achieving optimum stimulation of the sensorimotor apparatus.
