For a simple implementation, a linear convex splitting scheme was coupled with the Fourier spectral method for the Cahn-Hilliard equation with a logarithmic free energy. However, an inappropriate value of the splitting parameter of the linear scheme may lead to incorrect morphologies in the phase separation process. In order to overcome this problem, we present a nonlinear convex splitting Fourier spectral scheme for the Cahn-Hilliard equation with a logarithmic free energy, which is an appropriate extension of Eyre's idea of convex-concave decomposition of the energy functional. Using the nonlinear scheme, we derive a useful formula for the relation between the gradient energy coefficient and the thickness of the interfacial layer. And we present numerical simulations showing the different evolution of the solution using the linear and nonlinear schemes. The numerical results demonstrate that the nonlinear scheme is more accurate than the linear one.
In this paper, an improved automated spectral clustering (IASC) algorithm is proposed to address the limitations of the traditional spectral clustering (TSC) algorithm, particularly its inability to automatically determine the number of clusters. Firstly, a cluster number evaluation factor based on the optimal clustering principle is proposed. By iterating through different k values, the value corresponding to the largest evaluation factor was selected as the first-rank number of clusters. Secondly, the IASC algorithm adopts a density-sensitive distance to measure the similarity between the sample points. This rendered a high similarity to the data distributed in the same high-density area. Thirdly, to improve clustering accuracy, the IASC algorithm uses the cosine angle classification method instead of K-means to classify the eigenvectors. Six algorithms-K-means, fuzzy C-means, TSC, EIGENGAP, DBSCAN, and density peak-were compared with the proposed algorithm on six datasets. The results show that the IASC algorithm not only automatically determines the number of clusters but also obtains better clustering accuracy on both synthetic and UCI datasets.
This paper presents a two-stage spatio-spectral fusion method (2SSFM) based on area-to-point regression kriging (ATPRK) to enhance spatial and spectral resolutions using multi-sensor satellite images with complementary spatial and spectral resolutions. 2SSFM combines ATPRK and random forest regression to predict spectral bands at high spatial resolution from multi-sensor satellite images. In the first stage, ATPRK-based spatial down scaling is performed to reduce the differences in spatial resolution between multi-sensor satellite images. In the second stage, regression modeling using random forest is then applied to quantify the relationship of spectral bands between multi-sensor satellite images. The prediction performance of 2SSFM was evaluated through a case study of the generation of red-edge and short-wave infrared bands. The red-edge and short-wave infrared bands of PlanetScope images were predicted from Sentinel-2 images using 2SSFM. From the case study, 2SSFM could generate red-edge and short-wave infrared bands with improved spatial resolution and similar spectral patterns to the actual spectral bands, which confirms the feasibility of 2SSFM for the generation of spectral bands not provided in high spatial resolution satellite images. Thus, 2SSFM can be applied to generate various spectral indices using the predicted spectral bands that are actually unavailable but effective for environmental monitoring.
Objective methods to assess quantitatively port wine stain (PWS) blanching in response to laser therapy are needed to improve laser therapeutic outcome. Previous studies have attempted to assess objectively PWS color based on point measurement devices. To date, these approaches have typically been limited by a number of factors such as small test area and need for contact. To address these issues, a polarization spectral imaging system and an image analysis method have been developed to evaluate quantitatively erythema and melanin content distribution in skin. The developed polarization spectral imaging system minimizes artifacts such as glaring, shadowing, and non-uniform illumination that interfere with image fidelity. Furthermore, the image analysis method has been employed to get images of skin melanin and erythema indices from the acquired color images for quantitative analysis. Finally, using PWS patient color image, the effectiveness in laser treatment of PWS was evaluated by calculating relative erythema index image that is the relative erythema index of PWS region to the normal region. The developed device and analysis method appears to be a simple and effective method for quantitative analysis of PWS blanching.
In speech recognition for real-world applications, the performance degradation due to the mismatch introduced between training and testing environments should be overcome. In this paper, to reduce this mismatch, we provide a hybrid method of spectral subtraction and residual noise masking. We also employ multiple model approach to obtain improved robustness over various noise environments. In this approach, multiple model sets are made according to several noise masking levels and then a model set appropriate for the estimated noise level is selected automatically in recognition phase. According to speaker independent isolated word recognition experiments in car noise environments, the proposed method using model sets with only two masking levels reduced average word error rate by 60% in comparison with spectral subtraction method.

This paper deals with supersonic air-breathing missile system. A supersonic air-breathing missile system has very complicated and incoherent thrust characteristics with respect to outer and inner environment during operation. For this reason, the missile system has many maneuver constraints and is allowed to operate within narrow flight envelope. In this paper, trajectory optimization of the missile is accomplished. The trajectory optimization problem is formulated as a discrete parameter optimization problem. For this formulation, Legendre Pseudo-Spectral method is introduced. This method is based on calculating the state and control variables on Legendre-Gauss-Lobatto (LGL) points. This approach helps to find approximated derivative and integration quantities simply. It is shown that, for this trajectory optimization, trend analysis is performed from thrust characteristics on various conditions so that the trajectory optimization is accomplished with fine initial guess with these results.

In this study, a frequency domain model updating method is presented using power spectral density (PSD) data. It uses the sensitivity of PSD function with respect to the unknown structural parameters through a decomposed form of transfer function. The stiffness parameters are captured with high accuracy through solving the sensitivity equations utilizing the least square approach. Using numerically noise polluted data, the model updating results of a truss model prove robustness of the method against measurement and mass modelling errors. Results prove the capabilities of the method for parameter estimation using highly noise polluted data of low ranges of excitation frequency.

This paper considers a pipeline conveying one-dimensional unsteady flow inside. The dynamics of the fluid-pipe system is represented by two coupled equations of motion for the transverse and axial displacements, which are linearized from a set of partial differential equations which consists of the axial and transverse equations of motion of the pipeline and the equations of momentum and continuity of the internal flow. Because of the complex nature of fluid-pipe interactive mechanism, a very accurate solution method is required to get sufficiently accurate dynamic characteristics of the pipeline. In the literatures, the finite element models have been popularly used for the problems. However, it has been well recognized that finite element method (FEM) may provide poor solutions especially at high frequency. Thus, in this paper, a spectral element model is developed for the pipeline and its accuracy is evaluated by comparing with the solutions by FEM.
This paper proposes a fast Fourier transform(FFT)-based spectral analysis method(SAM) for the dynamic responses of the linear discrete dynamic models with non-proportional damping. The SAM was developed by using discrete Fourier transform(DFT)-theory. To verify the proposed SAM, a three-DOF system with non-proportional viscous damping is considered as an illustrative example. The present SAM is evaluated by comparing the dynamic responses obtained by SAM with those obtained by Runge-Kutta method.
In this paper, mathematical formulation of the high-order spectral/boundary-element method is shown. This method is one of the most efficient numerical methods by which the nonlinear gravity waves can be simulated in time-domain. Three-dimensional waves generated by a uniformly translating suriace pressure are calculated and discussed. The obtained results are compared with others results, The comparisons show good agreements.
