  • Whole-plant corn (Zea may L.) and sorghum-sudangrass hybrid [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench] are major summer crops that can be fed as direct-cut or silage. Proso millet is a short-season growing crop with distinct agronomic characteristics that can be productive in marginal lands. However, information is limited about the potential production, feed value, and ensilability of proso millet forage. We evaluated proso millet as a silage crop in comparison with conventional silage crops. Proso millet was sown on June 8 and harvested on September 5 at soft-dough stage. Corn and sorghum-sudangrass hybrid were planted on May 10 and harvested on September 10 at the half milk-line and soft-dough stages, respectively. The fermentation was evaluated at 1, 2, 3, 5, 10, 15, 20, 30, and 45 days after ensiling. Although forage yield of proso millet was lower than corn and sorghum-sudangrass hybrid, its relative feed value was greater than sorghum-sudangrass hybrid. Concentrations of dry matter (DM), crude protein, and water-soluble carbohydrate decreased commonly in the ensiling forage crops. The DM loss was greater in proso millet than those in corn and sorghum-sudangrass hybrid. The in vitro dry matter digestibility declined in the forage crops as fermentation progressed. In the early stages of fermentation, pH dropped rapidly, which was stabilized in the later stages. Compared to corn and sorghum-sudangrass hybrid, the concentration of ammonia-nitrogen was greater in proso millet. The count of lactic acid bacteria reached the maximum level on day 10, with the values of 6.96, 7.77, and 6.95 Log10 CFU/g fresh weight for proso millet, corn, and sorghum-sudangrass hybrid, respectively. As ensiling progressed, the concentrations of lactic acid and acetic acid of the three crops increased and lactic acid proportion became higher in the order of sorghum-sudangrass hybrid, corn, and proso millet. Overall, the shorter, fast-growing proso millet comparing with corn and sorghum-sudangrass hybrid makes this forage crop an alternative option, particularly in areas where agricultural inputs are limited. However, additional research is needed to evaluate the efficacy of viable strategies such as chemical additives or microbial inoculants to minimize ammonia-nitrogen formation and DM loss during ensiling.

  • An efficient, rapid and large-scale in vitro clonal propagation of agronomically important Indian cereal crop genotypes (NSH27 & K5) of Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench. by enhanced shoot proliferation in shoot tip segments was designed. MS medium fortified with plant growth regulators and coconut water markedly influenced in vitro propagation of Sorghum bicolor. In vitro plantlet production system has been investigated on Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium with the synergistic combination of 6-benzyladenine ($22.2\;{\mu}M$), kinetin ($4.6\;{\mu}M$), adenine sulphate ($2.8\;{\mu}M$), 5% coconut water and 3% sucrose which promoted the maximum number of shoots as well as beneficial shoot length. Subculturing of shoot tip segments on a similar medium enabled continuous production of more than 100 healthy shoots with similar frequency. When the healthy shoot clumps were cultured on MS medium fortified with 6-benzyladenine ($22.2\;{\mu}M$), kinetin ($4.6\;{\mu}M$), adenine sulphate ($2.8\;{\mu}M$), ${\alpha}$-naphthaleneacetic acid ($2.7\;{\mu}M$), ascorbic acid ($30.0\;{\mu}M$) and 5% coconut water, a rapid production of axillary and adventitious buds was developed after 8 wk culture. More than 300 shoots were produced 10 wk after culture. Rooting was highest (100%) on half strength MS medium containing 22.8 mM IAA. Micropropagated plants established in garden soil, farmyard soil and sand (2:1:1) were uniform and identical to the donor plant with respect to growth characteristics. These plants grew normally without showing any traits.

  • Effects of safener fluxofenim was investigated for crop injury of acetanilide's upland herbicides and for enzyme activity of glutathione S-transferase (GST) in grain sorghum. Bioassay with etiolated grain sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench. cv. 'G522DR'] seedlings grown in agar containing metolachlor or alachlor showed that they are strong inhibitors on root growth of grain sorghum ($GI_{50}=4.5{\mu}M$ for metolachlor and $6.2{\mu}M$ for alachlor). The safener fluxofenim applied by seed soaking protected growth of grain sorghum from crop injury of metolachlor or alachlor at the concentrations of 1 to 10 ${\mu}M$. There was a significant increase in glutathione-herbicide conjugates in root tissues of fluxofenim-treated seedlings. Activities of $GST_{-metolachlor}$ and $GST_{-CDNB}$ were increased by 82% and 70%, respectively, in the cytosolic fraction of roots with fluxofenim treatment.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the appearance, sensory and physicochemical characteristics of muffin added glutinous(GSP) and non-glutinous sorghum powder(NGSP). As increasing the amounts of sorghum powder, proximate (moisture, ash and protein) and minerals composition(K, Ca, Mg and Na) of muffin were significant difference. The weight, volume, height, lightness(L-value) and yellowness(b-value) were decreased as increasing the amounts of sorghum powder. In the results of sensory evaluation, appearance, color, flavor, taste, texture and overall quality of untreated muffin were 1.4, 1.6, 1.4, 1.0, 1.1 and 0.9, and muffin added 10% GSP and NGSP were scored relatively high. Antioxidant compounds contents of muffin added sorghum powder were increased as increasing the amounts of sorghum powder. DPPH and ABTS free radical scavenging activities on methanolic extracts of untreated muffin were 0.74 and 1.31 mg TE/g ER, respectively. DPPH and ABTS free radical scavenging activities of 100% GSP muffin were 9.40 and 19.14 mg TE/g ER, and 100% NGSP muffin were 10.59 and 18.78 mg TE/g ER, respectively. The results of this study show that notable antioxidant compounds and antioxidant activity on muffin added sorghum powder are considered to have significant health benefits.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate soil nutrient concentrations and fertilizer recovery of sorghum- sudangrass hybrid (Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench) as affected by organic nutrient sources. The treatments included livestock compost, alfalfa hay, oilcake, and chemical fertilizer. Nutrient applications were made at the rates equivalent to approximately 210 kg N per hectare. The oilcake and alfalfa materials had the lowest C : N ratio, but the livestock compost had the highest C:N ratio such as 33.7 : 1. The livestock compost resulted in the highest input to ground surface, which increased nutrient concentrations in soil. The oilcake and alfalfa materials with low C : N ratios increased N-mineralization rate in soil compared to livestock. The N uptake efficiency in plants treated by alfalfa or oilcake was approximately 60% of those treated with chemical fertilizer; but those with livestock compost had N uptake efficiency lower than 20%. The $P_2O_5$ uptake efficiency was the highest in the plants treated with the alfalfa hay, but the lowest in those with livestock compost. Recommendation of organic material selection should consider C:N ratio of the raw materials based on the individual crop requirement.

  • This study was carried out to optimize the embryogenic callus induction and plant regeneration from mature seeds of Sorghum bicolor. The effect of growth regulators was investigated on formation of embryogenic callus. The highest frequency of embryogenic callus was observed when the mature seeds were cultured on B5 medium supplemented with 2 mg/L 2,4-Dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D). The highest frequency of plant regeneration from embryogenic callus was observed on MS medium with 0.5 $mg\;l^{-1}$ 6-benzyl amino purine (BAP) and 0.25 $mg\;l^{-1}$ indole-3-butyric acid (IBA) to optimize the shoot regeneration. High concentration of BAP (1 $mg\;l^{-1}$) supplemented with IBA (0.25 $mg\;l^{-1}$) was effective combination for shoot multiplication. MS medium supplemented with 1 $mg\;l^{-1}$ IBA was found to be the most effective for inducing roots. Normal rooted plantlets were transferred to the greenhouse for hardening with over 90% survival rate. Hence, this reproducible protocol could be useful for mass propagation and genetic transformation of S. bicolor.

  • This study was carried out to compare the physicochemical characteristics of the tofu (soybean curd) with the additions of sorghum powder (SP). With increasing amounts of sorghum powder, the yields of tofu were increased. The tofu made of 5 and 7% (w/w) addition rates of SP gave the similar yields with that of control. Moisture contents of the tofu made of roasted sorghum powder after steeping for 15 hours (WR-SP) were higher than those of the control and the tofu made of roasted sorghum powder after washing (SR-SP) without steeping. The dietary fiber contents of tofu were higher in the SP-added tofu than control. The potassium contents increased with SP addition rates, while calcium and magnesium decreased. With increasing SP addition rates, hardness of the tofu decreased. With increasing amounts of SP, the L- and b-values of tofu decreased, whereas a-value increased. The total polyphenol, flavonoid and tannin contents, and ascorbic acid equivalent antioxidant capacity in the tofu extracts increased with increasing SP rates. Antioxidant components and activity were the highest in the tofu made of roasted sorghum powder after washing without steeping with the addition rates of 3-10%.

  • To investigate the utilization of fly ash in agriculture, sorghum [Sorghum bicolor(L.) Moench] was used as the test crop. Soil was treated in pot experiments with anthracite and bituminous fly ash at 5 levels of 0, 6, 12, 18, and 24%, respectively. Growth status in terms of plant height and the number of nodes was improved in the order of bituminous treatment > anthracite treatment > control. The increment of fly ash had a positive effects on plant growth in both anthracite and bituminous treatment. The ratio of the senescent leaves to the all leaves during the maturing period was higher in fly ash treatments than in the control. As increasing the fly ash treatment, the ratio of senescent leaves was increased. Total yield was higher in the order of bituminous treatment > anthracite treatment > control. Grain yield also was higher in fly ash treatment than in the control. Bituminous fly ash treatments were more favourable in grain yield than anthracite. The increment of up to 12% fly ash to soil increased grain yield in both anthracite and bituminous. Application of bituminous fly ash could be recommended due to the fact that high pH of soil is favorable for growth of sorghum.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate on agronomic characteristics, dry matter (DM) and digestible dry matter (DDM) yields of summer sowing sorghum hybrids (Sorghum bicolor (L) Moench) at Seongju in Gyeongbuk from 2013 to 2014. The experiment was arranged in randomized complete block design with three replications. Sorghum hybrids were seeded $31^{st}$ of July, 2013 and 2014. Sorghum hybrids were harvested on $3^{rd}$ November, 2013 and $5^{th}$ November, 2014. The observed average heading date was October 5, 8 and 9 for Sordan79, Sprint and SX17 respectively. The DM yield of 'SX17', 'Sordan79', and 'Sprint' was 24.2, 23,9 and 23.4 ton/ha, respectively and DM yield of those were significantly higher (p<0.05) than other three cultivars in 2013. DM yield of 'SX17', 'Sprint' and 'Sordan79' was 20.8, 20.0 and 19.3 ton/ha, respectively and DM yield of those was significantly higher (p<0.05) than other three cultivars in 2014. The DDM yield of 'SX17', 'Sordan79', and 'Sprint' was also higher (p<0.05) than other three cultivars in 2013 and 2014. ADF content of sorghum hybrids was low, whereas DDM was high. The results of this study indicated that traditional sorghum-sudangrass hybrids ('SX17', 'Sordan79') and sudan grass-sudangrass hybrid ('Sprint') than late flowering sorghum-sudangrass hybrid ('PACF8350') and sorghum-sorghum hybrids ('SS405', 'Sugar grazer') would be recommended for DM and DDM yields in the southern Korea.
