  • Recent beauty trends focus on suitability to individual features. A personal color system is a recent aesthetic concept that influences color make up and coordination. However, a personal color concept has several weaknesses. For example, type classification is qualitative and not quantitative because its measuring system is a sensory test with no industry standard of personal color system. A quantitative personal color type classification model is the purpose of this study, which can be a solution to above problems. This model is a kind of mapping system in a 3D Cartesian coordinate system which has own axes, Value, Saturation, and Yellowness. The cheek color of the individual sample is also independent variable and personal color type is a dependent variable. In order to construct the model, this study conducted a colorimetric survey on a 993 sampling frequency of Korean women in their 20s and 30s. The significance of this study is as follows. First, through this study, personal color system is established on quantitative color space; in addition, the model has flexibility and scalability because it consisted of independent axis that allows for the inclusion of any other critical variable in the form of variable axis.

  • Since the face in image content corresponds to individual information that can distinguish a specific person from other people, it is important to accurately detect faces not hidden in an image. In this paper, we propose a method to accurately detect a face from input images using a deep learning algorithm, which is one of the machine learning methods. In the proposed method, image input via the red-green-blue (RGB) color model is first changed to the luminance-chroma: blue-chroma: red-chroma ($YC_bC_r$) color model; then, other regions are removed using the learned skin color model, and only the skin regions are segmented. A CNN model-based deep learning algorithm is then applied to robustly detect only the face region from the input image. Experimental results show that the proposed method more efficiently segments facial regions from input images. The proposed face area-detection method is expected to be useful in practical applications related to multimedia and shape recognition.

  • Color segmentation takes great attentions since a color is an effective and robust visual cue for characterizing one object from other objects. Color segmentation is, however, suffered from color variation induced from irregular illumination changes. This paper proposes a reliable color modeling approach in HSI (Hue-Saturation-Intensity) rotor space considering intensity information by adopting B-spline curve fitting to make a mathematical model for statistical characteristics of a color with respect to brightness. It is based on the fact that color distribution of a single-colored object is not invariant with respect to brightness variations even in HS (Hue-Saturation) plane. The proposed approach is applied for the segmentation of human skin areas successfully under various illumination conditions.

  • This paper presents a novel makeup simulation method for powder application. We propose a color appearance model for powder coated skin that is simple but yet capable of producing realistic visual results. From the photos of several artificial skins before and after powder application, the translucency and thickness parameters are achieved by fitting the color model to the photos. Thickness patterns of powder application on actual human face skin is also extracted, and used in makeup simulations on photos of different human face to give more visually appealing results. From experiments, we found that the simulation results are quite realistic, and expect that the proposed makeup simulation can be used as a virtual coloring test in the cosmetic labs.

  • In this paper, we present a novel method for classifying pornography images using adaptive skin detection. From an input image, we detect initial skin regions and construct an adaptive skin probability density model using color information for the detected skin regions. From the skin probability density model, we extract feature vectors and train the images using Support Vector Machine to classify pornography images.

  • Robust extraction of 3D facial features and global motion information from 2D image sequence for the MPEG-4 SNHC face model encoding is described. The facial regions are detected from image sequence using multi-modal fusion technique that combines range, color and motion information. 23 facial features among the MPEG-4 FDP (Face Definition Parameters) are extracted automatically inside the facial region using color transform (GSCD, BWCD) and morphological processing. The extracted facial features are used to recover the 3D shape and global motion of the object using paraperspective camera model and SVD (Singular Value Decomposition) factorization method. A 3D synthetic object is designed and tested to show the performance of proposed algorithm. The recovered 3D motion information is transformed into global motion parameters of FAP (Face Animation Parameters) of the MPEG-4 to synchronize a generic face model with a real face.

  • Low-cost, ultra-high-speed cameras, made possible by the development of image sensors and small displays, can be very useful in image processing and pattern recognition. This paper introduces an algorithm that corrects irregular lighting from a high-speed image that is continuously input with a slight time interval, and which then obtains an exposed skin color region that is the area of interest in a person from the corrected image. In this study, the non-uniform lighting effect from a received high-speed image is first corrected using a frame blending technique. Then, the region of interest is robustly obtained from the input high-speed color image by applying an elliptical skin color distribution model generated from iterative learning in advance. Experimental results show that the approach presented in this paper corrects illumination in various types of color images, and then accurately acquires the region of interest. The algorithm proposed in this study is expected to be useful in various types of practical applications related to image recognition, such as face recognition and tracking, lighting correction, and video indexing and retrieval.

  • Quantitative measurement of melanin is the best method to evaluate whitening effect of cosmetics on human skin. However, non-invasive method to quantify human skin melanin with high precision has not been established. Whitening effect of cosmetics on the skin results in lightening of skin color. Therefore, it is reasonable to measure skin color in a reproducible manner for the assessment of whitening effect. Several Instruments or methods, such as colorimeter, mexameter, and visual assessments by experts , have been used for this purpose. In this lecture I will review the details of various assessment methods for the evaluation of whitening effect and discuss the pros and cons of each method. Then I will present briefly the results of clinical trial. Finally I will introduce new non-invasive modalities to quantify melanocytes.

  • In this paper, we propose a method to detect contours of a face, eyes, and a mouth of a person in the color image in order to make an avatar automatically. First, we use the HSI color model to exclude the effect of various light conditions, and find skin regions in the input image by using the skin color defined on HS-plane. And then, we use deformable templates and genetic algorithm (GA) to detect contours of a face, eyes, and a mouth. Deformable templates consist of B-spline curves and control point vectors. Those represent various shapes of a face, eyes and a mouth. GA is a very useful search algorithm based on the principals of natural selection and genetics. Second, the avatar is automatically created by using GA-detected contours and Fuzzy C-Means clustering (FCM). FCM is used to reduce the number of face colors. In result, we could create avatars which look like handmade caricatures representing user's identity. Our approach differs from those generated by existing methods.
