In recent years, the multilevel converters have been given more attention due to their modularity, reliability, failure management and multi stepped output waveform with less total harmonic distortion. This paper presents a novel symmetric multilevel inverter topology with reduced switching components to generate a high quality stepped sinusoidal voltage waveform. The series and parallel combinations of switches in the proposed topology reduce the total number of conducting switches in each level of output voltages. In addition, a comparison between the proposed topology with another topology from the literature is presented. To verify the proposed topology, the computer based simulation model is developed using MATLAB/Simulink and experimentally with a prototype model results are then compared.
This paper presents a simple approach for the selective harmonic elimination (SHE) of multilevel inverter based on the transistor-clamped H-bridge (TCHB) family. The SHE modulation is derived from the sinusoidal voltage-angle equal criteria corresponding to the optimized switching angles. The switching angles are computed offline by solving transcendental non-linear equations characterizing the harmonic contents using the Newton-Raphson method to produce an optimum stepped output. Simulation and experimental tests are conducted for verification of the analytical solutions. An Altera DE2 field-programmable gate array (FPGA) board is used as the digital controller device in order to verify the proposed SHE modulation in real-time applications. An analysis of the voltage total harmonic distortion (THD) has been obtained for multiple output voltage cases. In terms of the THD, the results showed that the higher the number of output levels, the lower the THD due to an increase number of harmonic orders being eliminated.
In elliptical vibration cutting(EVC) where the cutting tool traces a micro-scale 2-dimensional elliptical trajectory, the kinematical and vibrational characteristics of the EVC device greatly affect cutting performance. In this study, kinematical and vibrational characteristics of an EVC device constructed with two orthogonally-arranged stacked piezoelectric actuators were investigated both analytically and experimentally. The step voltage was applied to the orthogonal EVC device and the associated displacements of the cutting tool were measured to assess kinematical characteristics of the orthogonal EVC device. To investigate the vibrational characteristic of the orthogonal EVC, sinusoidal voltage was applied to the EVC device and the resulting displacements were measured. It was found from experiments that coupling of displacements in the thrust and cutting directions and the tilt of the major axis of the elliptical trajectory exists. In addition, as the excitation frequency is in vicinity of resonant frequencies the distortion in the shape of the elliptical trajectory becomes greater and change in the rotation direction occurs. To correct the shape distortion of the elliptical trajectory, the shape correcting procedure developed for the parallel EVC device was applied for the orthogonal EVC device and it was shown that the shape correcting method successfully corrects distortion.

The hybrid cascaded multilevel inverter (HCMLI) is a popular converter topology that is being increasingly used in high power medium voltage drives. The intricacy of the control technique for a HCMLI increases with the number of levels and due to fluctuating dc voltages. This paper presents a novel offline quadrant search based space vector modulation technique to synthesize a sinusoidal output from a dispersed pattern of voltage vectors due to different voltages in the auxiliary unit. Such an investigation has never been reported in the literature and it is being attempted for the first time. The method suggested distributes the voltage vectors for a reduced total harmonic distortion at minimal computation. In addition, the proposed algorithm determines the maximum modulation index in the linear modulation range in order to synthesize a sinusoidal output for both normal and abnormal vector patterns. It is better suited for a wide range of practical applications. It is particularly well suited for renewable source fed inverters which utilize large capacitor banks to maintain the dc link, which are prone to such slow fluctuations. The proposed quadrant search space vector modulation technique is simulated using MATLAB/SIMULINK and implemented using a Nexys-2 Spartan-3E FPGA for a developed prototype.
This paper proposed the voltage control of stand-alone inverter for power quality improvement under unbalanced and non-linear load. The 3-phase DC-AC inverter controls CVCF(Constant Voltage Constant Frequency) and selective harmonic eliminate method in stand-alone mode by PR controller, and the stand-lone inverter supplies stable sinusoidal voltage to balanced, unbalanced and non-linear loads. The total harmonic distortion(THD) of line-to-line load voltage($V_{LL}$) is 1.2% in the balanced load. THD of $V_{LL}$ is reduced from 5.2% to 1.4% and 6.7% to 3.5%, respectively unbalanced and non-linear load. The stand-alone inverter can be supplies sinusoidal balanced voltage to unbalanced load because the voltage unbalanced factor(VUF) of $V_{LL}$ is reduced from 5.2% to 1.4% in the unbalanced load. Feasibility of control method for a stand-alone inverter will be verified through 30kW stand-alone inverter system.

Two sinusoidal voltage-controlled oscillators using linear operational transconductance amplifiers are presented in this paper: One is based on the positive-feedback bandpass oscillator model and the other on the negative-feedback Colpitts model. The bandpass VCO consists of a noninverting amplifier and a current-controlled LC-tuned circuit which is realized by two linear OTA's and two grounded capacitors, while the Colpitts VCO consists of an inverting amplifier and a current-controlled LC-tuned circuit realized by three linear OTA's and three grounded capacitors. Prototype circuits have been built with discrete components. The experimental results have shown that the Colpitts VCO has a linearity error of less than 5 percent, a temperature coefficient of less than rm 100 ppm/$^{circ}C$, and a $pm1.5 Hz $frequency drift over an oscillation frequency range from 712Hz to 6.3kHz. A total harmonic distortion of 0.3 percent has been measured for a 3.3kHz oscillation and the corresponding peak-to-peak amplitude was 1V. The experimental results for bandpass VCO are also presented.
The vibration exciter with the accurate calibration requires a low distortion along a single axis over a wide range of frequency. The fabricated piezoelectric exciter was composed of a base, piezoelectric element(Venitron PZT 5A), electrode and seismic mass. Its performance characteristics is evaluated the Mach-Zehnder optical fiber interferometer. The phase of the optical wave passing through the optical fiber around the piezoelectric element was related the vibrational amplitude with a change of the applied sinusoidal voltage on the piezoelectric element. The dynamic characteristics of vibration exciter can be obtained by measuring the vibrational amplitude with a sinusoidal applied voltage on the piezoelectric element. The sensitivity of the fabricated piezoelectric exciter had a 0.4 nm/V which was uniform up to 20 kHz.
This paper presents a current control strategy in the synchronous reference frame for a single-phase PWM converter, which ensures sinusoidal input current control under the distorted source voltage and frequency condition. Given that the distorted source voltage distorts the phase angle for PWM converter control, the input current contains the same harmonics as the source voltage. Aside from the distorted voltage, the variation in source frequency reduces the performance of input current control. To achieve sinusoidal input current control under the distorted source voltage and frequency condition, this paper proposes a compensation strategy of current reference with the distortion component extracted from the phase angle and a detection strategy of frequency variation from the output of a synchronous reference frame phase-lock loop. The experimental results confirm the validity of the proposed method under the distorted source voltage and frequency condition.

This paper presents an implementation of selective harmonic elimination (SHE) modulation for a single-phase 13-level transistor-clamped H-bridge (TCHB) based cascaded multilevel inverter. To determine the optimum switching angle of the SHE equations, the Newton-Raphson method is used in solving the transcendental equation describing the fundamental and harmonic components. The proposed SHE scheme used the relationship between the angles and a sinusoidal reference waveform based on voltage-angle equal criteria. The proposed SHE scheme is evaluated through simulation and experimental results. The digital modulator based-SHE scheme using a field-programmable gate array (FPGA) is described and has been implemented on an Altera DE2 board. The proposed SHE is efficient in eliminating the $3^{rd}$, $5^{th}$, $7^{th}$, $9^{th}$ and $11^{th}$ order harmonics, which validates the analytical results. From the results, it can be seen that the adopted 13-level inverter produces a higher quality with a better harmonic profile and sinusoidal shape of the stepped output waveform.
