To investigate the run-up heights of nearshore tsunamis in the vicinity of a circular island, a numerical model has been developed based on quadtree grids. The governing equations of the model are the nonlinear shallow-water equations. The governing equations are discretized explicitly by using a finite difference leap-frog scheme on adaptive hierarchical quadtree grids. The quadtree grids are generated around a circular island where refined with rectangular or circular domain. Obtained numerical results have been verified by comparing to available laboratory measurements. A good agreement has been achieved.

Most of the previous models for analysis of shallow water flow assumed the uniform velocity distributions over the flow depth so that they produced incorrect velocity prediction at meandering part due to the ignorance of secondary current. In this study, the vertical velocity profiles in longitudinal and transverse direction were decomposed as the mean and variation components, which resulted in additional dispersion stresses terms in momentum equations. The proposed model were applied at the channels with $30^{\circ}$, $90^{\circ}$, $270^{\circ}$ bends, and shallow water flow in curved channel was analyzed using dispersion stresses. The dispersion stresses acted as a sink or source in the momentum equations, which caused the transverse convection of momentum to shift from the inner bank to the outer bank.
Shallow water equations were applied to the flow in and through the opening to a coastal bay with different open boundary conditions. The open boundaries, shaped like a semi-circle, have various radii. the open boundaries therefore are defined in terms of radius given by multiple of the opening width, 2B. It was found from numerical experiments that for adequate results proper radius of the boundary is 3B or greater and that for radius greater than 3B the solutions become stable. For the solution of the shallow water equations a typical Galerkin's finite element method was used.
The run-up process of the 1983 Central East Sea Tsunami along the Eastern Coast is numerically investigated in this study. A finite difference numerical model based on the nonlinear shallow-water equations is employed. The maximum run-up height at Imwon is predicted and compared to field observation. A good agreement is observed. A maximum inundation map is made based on the maximum run-up heights to accentuate hazards of tsunami flooding.
In this study, a numerical model describing the shallow-water equations is newly developed by using a TVD scheme. The model has a second-order accuracy in time and space and is free from nonphysical oscillations, even in the vicinity of large gradients. Because a upwind based TVD scheme requires a Riemann solver, the HLLC scheme is employed in this model. To calibrate the applicability and accuracy, the developed model is used to simulate dam-break waves in an ideal channel and a sloshing flow n a paraboloidal basin. Agreements between numerical predictions and analytical solutions are very resonable.
This paper provides numerical results of the simulation for the flow around the hull and the propeller of KCS model ship advancing in shallow water conditions. A finite volume method is used to solve the unsteady Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes(RANS) equations, where the wave-making problem is solved by using a volume-of-fluid(VOF) method. The wave formed near the hull surface in shallow water conditions shows a deep trough dominant pattern that causes the loss of buoyancy followed by hull squat. The flow past the hull increases as the depth of water decreases. However, the axial flow velocity around the stern shows a reduction in magnitude by the effect of shallow water accompanied by the hull-propeller interaction. As a results, the thrust and torque coefficient increase about 8.3% and 6.2%, respectively for a depth of h/T=3.0 corresponding to a depth Froude number of $F_h=0.693$. The resistance coefficient increases about 11.6% at this Froude number condition.
This study suggests a new hydrostatic pressure distribution corrected for nonuniform flow over a channel of large slope. For analyzing shallow-water flows over large slope accurately, it is developed a finite-volume model incorporating the pressure distribution to the shallow water equations. Traveling speed of the hydraulic jump downstream a parabolic bump in the drain case is quite reduced by the weakened bottom gradient source term in the model with the pressure correction. In simulating the dam-break flow over a triangular sill, it is identified that the model with pressure correction could capture the water surface by the digital imaging measurements more than the model without that. Due to the pressure correction decreasing the reflected flows on and increasing overflows over the sill, there are good agreements in the experiment and the simulation with that. Therefore, this model is expected to be applied to such practical problems as flows in the spillway of dam or run-up on the beach.
The numerical simulation of dam break problem suffers from several challenges in terms of accuracy, stability, and versatility of the simulation algorithm since the water flow is generally discontinuous and presents abrupt variations. Thus, to obtain stable and accurate solutions, flow models for this purpose require numerical schemes provided with shock-capturing properties, and with the ability to work with flexible two-dimensional meshes. In this context, SU/PG method(Hughes and Brooks, 1979) is excellent candidate for the solution of the dam break problem. The weak formulation of the equations and the discontinuous polynomial basis lead to an accurate representation of bore waves(shocks). Furthermore, the discretization of the domain in finite elements is extremely effective in modeling complex geometries. In this study, a finite element model based on the SU/PG scheme is developed to solve shallow water equations and the model is applied to dam break problem. It is found that the present model accurately captures the bore wave that propagates downstream while spreading laterally and the depression wave that moves upstream. Furthermore, the propagation and formation of water surface profile compared favorably with those obtained by the previously published results.
A numerical model for the solution of two-dimensional free surface flow is developed on unstructured grid. By using fractional step method, the two-dimensional shallow water equations (SWE) are treated as two one-dimensional problems. Thus, it is possible to simulate computational hydraulic problems with higher computational efficiency. The one-dimensional problems are solved using upwind TVD version of second-order Weighted Averaged Flux (WAF) scheme with HLLC approximate Riemann solver. The numerical oscillations which are common with second-order numerical scheme are controlled by exploiting WAF flux limiter, Some idealized test problems are solved using this model and very accurate and stable solutions are obtained. It can be concluded as an efficient implement for the computation of SWE including dam break problems that concerning discontinuities, subcritical and supercritical flows and complex domain.

The HLLL scheme, proposed by T. Linde, determines all the wave speeds from the initial states because the middle wave is evaluated by the introduction of a generalized entropy function. The scheme is considered a genuine successor to the original HLL scheme because it is completely separated form the Roe's linearization scheme unlike the HLLE scheme and does not rely on the exact solution unlike the HLLC scheme. In this study, a numerical model was configured by the HLLL scheme with the total energy as a generalized entropy function to solve governing equations, which are the one-dimensional shallow water equations without source terms and with an additional conserved variable relating a concentration. Despite the limitations of the first order solutions, results to three cases with the exact solutions were generally accurate. The HLLL scheme appeared to be superior in comparison with the other HLL-type schemes. In particular, the scheme gave fairly accurate results in capturing the front of wetting and drying. However, it revealed shortcomings of more time-consuming calculations compared to the other schemes.
