Background: Sexual dimorphism is important for sex determination in the field of forensics. However, sexual dimorphism is commonly assessed using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) rather than three-dimensional (3D) modeling software; therefore, studies using a more accurate measurement approach are necessary. This study assessed the sexual dimorphism of the MS using a 3D modeling program to obtain information that could contribute to the fields of surgery and forensics. Methods: The CBCT data of 60 patients (age, 20~29 y; 30 males and 30 females) admitted to the Department of Orthodontics at the Dankook University School of Dentistry were provided in Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine (DICOM) format. The left MS and right MS were modeled based on the DICOM files using the Mimics (version 22; Materialise, Leuven, Belgium) 3D program and converted to stereolithography (STL) files used to measure the width, length, and height of the MS, infraorbital foramen (IOF), right MS, and left MS. The average of three repeated measurements was calculated, and a reliability test was performed to ensure data reliability (Cronbach's α=0.618). A canonical discriminant analysis was performed using a standard approach (left: Box's M=0.096; right: Box's M=0.115). Results: Males had greater values for all parameters (MS width, MS length, MS height, IOF, right MS, left MS) than females. The discriminant analysis identified six independent variables (MS width, MS height, MS length, IOF, right MS, left MS) that could identify sex. The left MS and right MS correctly identified the sex of 81.7% and 71.7% of the patients, respectively, with the left MS having higher accuracy. Conclusion: This study confirmed that, for Korean individuals, the left MS has a better ability to identify sex than the right MS. These results may contribute to sex identification in the fields of surgery and forensics.

연구자는 현대 한국 사회에 큰 충격을 던져주었던 N번방 사건을 계기로 한국 청소년성교육을 둘러싼 각종 논쟁들과 시각의 차이를 살펴보았다. 한국 청소년 성교육은 학교 성교육과 및 청소년성문화센터를 통해 이루어지는 공적 성교육과 보수적·전통적 개신교 성교육으로 나누어질 수 있다. 공적 성교육은 여성주의 성윤리 및 해외의 포괄적 성교육의 영향을 일부 받아 성인지 감수성 및 성적 자기 결정권을 기본으로 성희롱, 성매매, 성폭력, 가정폭력 예방의 4가지 예방을 주요 사업으로 실시 중이다. 단, 학교 성교육표준안은 성역할 고정관념 및 성차별적 내용, 성폭력에 대한 왜곡된 통념 강화 및 성적 다양성과 다양한 가족 형태의 배제 등으로 비판받았으며, 청소년성문화센터 교육의 일부 내용 역시 마찬가지의 비판을 받고 있다. 보수적·전통적 개신교는 양성에 의한 결혼 등의 정상 가족 이데올로기와 혼전순결주의, 결혼 관계 안에서만 인정되는 성관계 윤리 등을 기본으로 하여 청소년들에게 피임법을 성에 대한 생물학적이고 의학적 지식을 가르치는 것-피임법 등-에 대해 강하게 반대하면서 공적 성교육과 대치하는 형태를 이루고 있다. 연구자는 한국 청소년 성교육을 위한 커리큘럼을 구성하면서 먼저 공적 성교육, 보수적·전통적 개신교 성윤리와 성교육, 여성주의 성윤리와 성교육, 해외 청소년성교육의 특징을 각각 분석하였다. 그리고 청소년 성교육의 보다 근본적인 해결책으로 금욕주의나 혼전순결주의, 성인지 감수성과 성적 자기결정권 교육으로는 한계가 있음을 지적하면서 이의 대안을 여성신학에서 말하는 몸과 성 개념에서 찾았다. 연구자는 다양한 여성신학자의 연구를 중심으로 왜곡된 성인식과 성문화는 이원론적 성과 몸 이해가 가장 근본적인 원인이라는 인식 하에 몸과 성에 대한 재개념화가 필요하다고 지적하며 이를 통전적 성, 타인과의 관계 속에서 이해되는 상호연대적인 성, 전 지구적인 공동체로 확장되는 영성으로서의 성 개념의 세 가지로 개념화하였다. 그리고 각각의 영역을 위한 교육과정으로 1)통전적 성: 호흡하기, 내러티브, 자신의 몸과 마음의 형태를 만들어보기 2)타인과의 관계성 안에서 이해되어지는 상호연대적인 성: 다른 사람의 호흡 느껴보기, 의식화를 통한 미디어 리터러시, 선한 바람 보내기 3)전 지구적 관심으로 확장되는 영성으로서의 성: 자연에 주의를 기울이고 공동 경작하기, 지구의 신음을 듣고 새로운 삶의 형식 만들어가기, 지구 및 동료 생명체들과 함께 하는 기도문 작성하기로 제안하였다.

Purpose: This study was done to discover the contents needed for a sexual education program in the lower grades (the first to the third grade) by primary school teachers and to discover difficulties in confronting sexual education. Method: This was a descriptive study of 198 teachers for lower grade students in 15 primary schools. A questionnaire on sexual education was distributed and collected by mail. Result: The contents for sexual education that teachers felt were highly needed are as follows: sanitation of genitals, sexual violence, pregnancy & childbirth, family, selfassertion, and sexual self-determination. Teachers think prevention of sexual violence is the main reason for sexual education. Teachers indicated that sexual education considering the developmental stage was difficult. Conclusion: Development of a sexual education curriculum for lower grade primary school students is necessary for increasing the problem-solving ability of students focused on sexual violence, self-assertion and sexual self-determination, in addition to providing simple information.

Statistical tools for determining sex in the sexually monomorphic black-billed magpie based on morphological characters have been developed based on studies of European and North American populations. However, since no morphological method has been developed for black-billed magpies in Korea, it has been difficult to conduct field studies that require information about the sex of individuals. We present two discriminant equations for determining sex of second-year (SY) and after-second-year (ASY) magpies in north- and midwestern part of South Korea. Based on morphological measurements on 105 SY (56 females, 49 males) and 72 ASY (36 females, 36 males) individuals, we found body mass, wing chord, and head length to be the most useful features for morphological sex determination. The accuracy of our method was 86.5% for SYs and 93.1% for ASYs, which is similar to values reported previously from American and European magpies. Since the equations contain morphological traits which are only minimally susceptible to seasonal variation and measurement errors, our discriminant equations should be both useful and robust for sex determination on black-billed magpies in the northern and mid-western regions of South Korea.

한성반문 및 한성란색 계통잠에 있어서 전좌염색체로 인한 생리적 결함이 전견중, 견층중 및 견층비율에 미치는 영향을 이들에 관한 성차를 지표로 하여 검토한 결과, 한성 및 비한성 계통견의 전견중의 성차 평균치는 각각 127%, 129%, 견층중의 성차는 각각 107%, 110%, 견층비율의 성차는 공히 85%였다. 이상의 결과에서 한성반문 및 한성 난색계통잠은 전견중, 견층중, 견층비율 등의 실용형질에 관한 한 전좌된 염색체편에 기인하는 생리적 결함은 극히 미소한 것으로 생각된다.

This study was conducted to analyze the specific genes associated with sex-determination in Korean native cow. The highly organized spermatogenesis requires accurate spatial and temporal regulation of gene expression, which is governed by transcriptional, post-transcriptional, and epigenetic processes. Recently, farmers have been interested in determining the sexual identity of the calves in their farm. We analyzed the sperm of Korean native and Holstein cows, which were supplied from Hanwoo Improvement Center. We evaluated sperm motility and expression of sperm-specific genes after treating semen with both male- and female reagents. Sperm motility in Korean native cows decreased by approximately 10% in the first 30 minutes after treatment with sex-determination reagent. However, sperm motility of Holstein cows decreased to 60-70% after 15 minutes and to 20-30% after 30 minutes. We selected six specific genes expressing in the spermatozoa to analysis the gene expression level. The Real-time PCR results suggest that the selected genes (Gimap4, Tmeff1, Rac2, Abi2, Rac1, and Clu) were highly expressed in the group treated with the male reagent compared to the group treated the female reagent and to the untreated-group (control). In the present study, we suggest that the selected genes play a pivotal role in sex-determination.

우리나라에 분포하는 멧토끼 (Lepus coreanus)의 성판별을 위한 분자 표지자를 개발하기 위하여, X, Y 염색체간 상동인 ZFX와 ZFY 유전자들의 성별 이형성에 초점을 맞추어 본 연구를 수행하였다. ZFX와 ZFY 유전자의 인트론 7 영역은 멧토끼의 암수가 구분되는 증폭 양상을 나타내었다. 인트론 7의 길이는 각각 ZFX에서 538, ZFY에서 233-bp로 확인되었다. 특히, ZFX의 인트론 7에서는 RNA-매개성 전위인자 중 한 종이며 토끼의 유전체에서 빈번하게 관찰되는 CSINE2와 유사한 반복서열이 발견되었다. 반면, 반복서열은 ZFY의 인트론 7에서는 관찰되지 않았다. ZFX와 ZFY 유전자의 인트론 7에서 확인된 길이의 차이에 근거하여 중합효소연쇄반응 기법을 이용한 유전자 성판별을 수행하였다. 시험에 이용된 모든 DNA시료들은 ZFX에서 증폭된 공통의 밴드를 가지고 있었다. 이에 반해, 멧토끼 수컷 DNA들은 각각 ZFX와 ZFY에서 증폭된 두 개의 구분되는 밴드들을 나타내었다. ZFX-ZFY 유전자·성판별 결과는 표현형 성별 정보뿐만 아니라 수컷-특이적인 SRY 유전자의 증폭양상과도 일치한 결과와도 정확히 일치하였다. 이상의 결과들은 멧토끼에서 ZFX와 ZFY의 인트론 7 영역간의 성별 이형성은 유전자 성판별을 위한 유용한 유전자 표지자가 될 것으로 사료된다.

The definition of Crime Indictable Upon Complaint (CIC) is crimes which can be prosecuted only with complaints from the victim or his/her direct parents. Sex crimes are the representative examples, rapes and indecent assaults. According to the research referenced in this paper, 74% of sex crimes which had been penalized based on Republic of Korea (ROK) Criminal Code amounts rape and indecent assault are CIC. However, only 20% of perpetrators were confined, and the rest received non-confinement or non-prosecution determination. The review of criminal history checks reveals that 67% of the perpetrators had criminal histories and 39% of them had more than three documented offenses. The CIC was established in order to protect the victim's rights and dignity, respecting the victim's opinion regarding the incident. All kinds of sex crimes then should have been the CIC, but those crimes such as Injury Resulting from Rape, Special Rape, Rape by Special Modus Operandi, Sexual Assault among Relatives and Domestic Violence which have to guarantee the opinion of the victims are prescribed as non-CIC. We therefore conclude that the CIC should be abolished. The abolition of CIC will play an important role in crime prevention because severe penalties for sex crimes will be imposed on the perpetrators. In addition, it will help the sex crime victims retrieve their dignity by spreading recognition widely through the community that sexual assault is not only a social assault but an infringement against human rights.

Avian sex determination system involves the male ZZ and female ZW chromosomes. However, very few studies are reported the expression, functional role and importance of genes on the W chromosome because of its small and highly heterochromatic genomic regions. Recent studies demonstrated that the W chromosome may have critical roles in physiology, sex determination and subsequent sexual differentiation in chickens. Therefore, gene annotation, including describing the expression and function of genes in the chicken W chromosome, is needed. In this study, we have searched the W chromosome of chickens and selected a total of 36 genes to evaluated their specific expression in the testis and ovary at various developmental stages such as embryonic day 6 (E6), hatch and adult. Interestingly, out of 36 genes in chicken W chromosome, we have found seven female-specific expression at E6.5 day, indicating that they are functionally related to female chicken gonadal differentiation. In addition, we have identified the stage specific gene expression from the sex specific genes. Furthermore, we analyzed the relative location of genes in the chicken W chromosome. Collectively, these results will contribute molecular insights into the sexual determination, differentiation and female development based on the W chromosome.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to develop a sexuality education course of study for students in the lower grades of elementary school. Method: On the basis of the sexuality education guidebook for elementary school students published by Korea Ministry of Education & Human Resources Development, the state-designated textbooks for first to third grade were analyzed. Results: 1) In the category of physical and psychological development, physical development and psychosexual development content were covered, but not sexual health content. 2) In the category of understanding of human relationship, marriage and family, and the opposite sex and love were presented but self-determination and selection were only partially presented. 3) In the category of sexual culture and sexual ethics, sexual role in society was covered, but not social environment or equality of the sexes. Conclusion: These results suggest that content on sexuality which is not covered in textbooks for students in lower grades should be included in other school courses or activities in class.
